  • It's that time of year again folks where we crown the winners, and the losers, of the EV world in the AutoEV Awards 2023. This is our third year of these awards and as always, all the cars we tested in 2023 have come under close scrutiny to be in with a chance of winning the coveted trophy. If you thought Strictly Come Dancing was nail-biting, you've no idea how fraught the PR and Press departments get when we announce our winners.......
    AutoEV - all electric, all independent.

    If you have between £70k and £125k sitting around then the BMW i5 may be the best but the average driver can’t or won’t pay that for a car.

    • @justininfrance
      @justininfrance 5 місяців тому +1

      Absolutely. A great many of us balk at paying over 30 grand, which makes buying any EV a mute point. Perhaps in another decade when prices are reasonable and an electric car might actually carry me further on one charge than my old clapped-out Fiat Punto.

  • @valleysofneptune

    Interesting video, but the reason why ev sales are slowing is the ridiculous price of purchase….the fact we’re discussing a EV saloon that is around £50+ k , is utterly absurd

    • @jonpaxman
      @jonpaxman 5 місяців тому +2

      There will always be £50k+ cars. EV prices are coming down if you know where to look though, and if you can charge at home you will save heaps in running costs.

    Best wishes to AutoEV for a happy new year, and a good health to all the staff. I had an afterthought concerning the best EV of 2023. I would propose the Polestar 2, with the range of the BMW i4, the charging speed of the Ioniq 5 and the build quality/reliability of a Lexus. What do you think?

    Great video and a nice round up of the year. Nice to see the RS e-tron GT getting a plaudit as well, glad you loved it, it’s a compelling grand tourer isn’t it.
    Keep up the great work and Happy New Year. All the best for 2024 🎉

    Lexus/Toyota has a massive dealership network.
    Lexus/Toyota dealerships are threatened by minimal maintenance EVs………..and don’t want a bar of EVs.
    The restructuring will be long, painful and with minimal enthusiasm.

    Glad to see the mention of sustainability when discussing the innovation award. Please consider just creating a Best Sustainability category in the future, because in the end, that's why EVs even matter, and as you said, we're kind of failing at the brief, as EV sizes and impact are actually growing. In the early years, 24 kWh cars were more sustainable than the 100, 135, and now 212 kWh giant SUVs, trucks, and massive range luxury cars. Had you awarded Sustainability last year or the year before, maybe the Fiat 500e or even the MINI SE could have won with small batteries, light weight, smaller build, and good and very good efficiency respectively.
    Polestar deserved a sustainability award in 2020, because they were the first to release an LCA report that admitted that their production emissions (CO2e in tons) is more than double what Argonne Labs GREET model suggested it has. In the intervening years, Volvo, Fisker, and in July BMW i5 have also admitted these dangerously high production emissions. Volvo is going so far as to rate all their vehicles including ICE and trucks. But awarding Polestar for sustainability is perhaps shortsighted, because their choice to build them in China has resulted in significantly higher production emissions, despite their early endeavor to use renewable power at a new sustainable assembly plant. The issue is their suppliers all are way behind on sustainability and low/zero emissions in their part of the chain. It's not fair to point fingers at Chinese production. No one is being transparent and doing their math in a way we can see/compare, though this move by Polestar began to scratch the surface.
    2023 was the first year where a government penalized EV models for excessive production emissions when France was seeking a way to block Chinese EV imports. It may have been done for the wrong reasons, but it does shine a spotlight on the problem that you see with Chinese built Tesla Model 3, Polestar 2, Volvo Recharges, and every other manufacturer who ran to China to build EVs only to inflate their emissions creating them with Chinese parts and manufacturing. This is a trick subject, no doubt, and you might not consider yourselves qualified to judge this, but there is every reason to try.
    BTW, the BMW i5's estimated production impact from their report is 17 tons CO2e, vs. 23-26 tons CO2e for Polestars and Volvo Recharges, so your car of the year at least managed to reflect one of the few who do expose these production numbers and it's slightly better than Fisker, Volvo, and Polestar so far.
    www.bmwgroup.com/content/dam/grpw/websites/bmwgroup_com/responsibility/downloads/en/2023/2309_BMW_LCAAnalyse_i5_eDrive40_EN.pdf
    Here is Fisker's which also includes comparisons to Volvo/Polestar:
    Just a note, LCA scientists all warn to NEVER compare LCA values across reports, because they are inherently non-standardized due to use of varying boundary conditions, model values, and methodologies used. I say, that subterfuge, even if they don't believe they mean it to be. We need them to standardize this quickly and to subject all cars to the same standards of evaluation, even if it's imperfect.

    The Jeep Avenger has this very down to earth practicality compared to everyone else trying to be a spaceship. Down to things like a physical button to tell the safety warnings to shut up. Its surprisingly novel. I am definitely more in the Smart #3 camp over the Smart #1 it seems wierdly upright but its clear Mercedes did have a hand in its design. I look forward to you getting your hands on a Smart #3. BYD being significantly cheaper outside Europe probably leads to them being thought of fondly.
    Happy New Year.

    Great video, I am sure the i5 is a fantastic car, but a 20k premium over the ICE version does not get people into EV space. I am an ev driver of three years, but manufacturers needs to address this point. Would be interested to hear your thoughts on this.

    I find it difficult to consider the Volvo recharge and Polestar 2 until they are built on a true ev platform. Great cars they undoubtedly are but there are too many compromises with the ice chassis for me. Both companies have shown that they can do it with the ex30 (exciting - can’t wait to drive) and the Polestar 3 respectively.

    Often like your reviews, but unforgivable not to have secured an EX30 drive THIS year not NEXT. How many other channels and auto content providers have it as their top or podium and you guys will be judging it a year behind the curve. Come on guys, it may be difficult to secure some of these cars but Volvo are shifting units and you really did need to get that driven and reviewed this year.
