I remember an interview with David Byrne where he said the big suit idea came from watching Kabuki theatre in Japan when objects and props are made larger than life for the effect on stage.
One great thing about bands that are so versatile like Talking Heads in that you can't say they have a definite sound. There really is no such thing as a Talking Heads song and that says a lot about any band.
I was there, they filmed it over 4 days. I'm telling you, not one single person was sitting after the first 2songs. I took some acid which was not needed. His songs just make you high. Last time I did drugs. The whole place was jumping.
One of my fave TH songs of all time. It's bass line is so...I don't even know how to describe it...it's groove is provocative as anything like it's earthy and true with the slightest edge of wise sarcasm.
The Talking Heads were from a time when music artists were allowed to get creative and do their own thing.Today the music industry is formulatic with the sole purpose of making money
absolutely loved stop making sense when i saw it in september! id love to see a reaction to the great curve sometime if you haven’t heard it yet. remain in light is one of talking heads’ best albums, i think!
So glad you guys reacted to this. I owned the vhs when I was a kid and it’s the reason I became a musician. I’ve owned the dvd probably 3 times (I would keep letting people borrow it and never got it back, which is fine). I wish I got a chance to see this tour but like you guys I wasn’t even born yet. I have seen David Byrne live solo a bunch of times and he’s amazing of course. Check out his recent hbo special “America utopia”. The ongoing debate is always “what’s the best concert movie of all time” and the conversation is between SMS and the last waltz. You guys should watch the last waltz as well, directed by Martin Scorsese. Really amazing stuff.
Gonna break your heart, here. I saw the SMS tour at Red Rocks. Probably a better performance and definitely a better venue than the film. Incredible! Oh, I have a concert film I think belongs in the conversation. Laurie Anderson's "Home of the Brave". Laurie, guitarist Adrian Belew, author William S. Burroughs, keyboardist Joy Askew, and percussionist David Van Tieghem.
@@jameswilson8433 very jealous that you got to see that. Was it the same basic set list? I know they played “the book I read” and a few other songs that didn’t make it to the movie.

This is the most new york sh!t ever, this whole film...i got into it as a 27 year old artist & musician almost 20 years ago, it changed my whole paradigm, hell yeah, great damn reactions
In that Byrne-on-Byrne interview he talks about the Big Suit and how he was going for a visual effect that would make his head seem smaller somehow LOL
Getting through my 2nd watching of your reactions of this movie. Good Stuff. Didn't read any comments below so I may be redundant. Tom Tom Club before (a spin off group with Tina and her husband Chris) played the song before so David could get into his suit. I saw a more recent interview with Byrne with Conan: He said that the idea of the suit came from seeing Japanese theater where they wear oversized costumes. He wanted his head to appear small compared to the rest of his body.
Someone needs to bring the Big Suit back. I was there!! Well, not at this exact show, but during this tour, we saw them. Amazing. I *think* the big suit was just being theatrical and being big and seen on stage, but I could be wrong. I enjoy your reactions, even if you just enjoy and like them.
I know what you mean about not knowing what to say about any one of the songs in this concert. You can randomly pick any song and it's a 'banger' (as the youngin's say). But this song is one of the most popular from the concert.

I love it when he has the camera man sing. He does not miss his chance.
Then he's in shock afterwards, like "Did that just happen?".

Ditto I heard the same. Years ago.
@@SightAfterDark Stop making sense!
Plot twist ; It's not an oversized suit , he's an undersized singer.
Am I making sense ?

Tina Weymouth is my favorite female rock artist. Period.
She’s the best!
The FUNK is real with this live version....I challenge anyone to listen to this and not move their asses
For real!
Better be... Bernie Worrell of Parliament/Funkadelic is their keyboardist

That's David Byrnes "Big Suit"! An iconic prop in the bands history!
Love the BIG SUIT!
Gotta love it!
As the back of the album says “Why a big suit”? 😀

David Byrne was a visual and performance artist before getting into music. Known for some of the most preposterous live shows this side of Gwar.
Really? Wow! That explains a lot!

David Byrne is a national treasure, lol. the big suit.
Absolutely
The suit was made large and from the materials it was made from to magnify Byrne’s famously gawky dance moves.
Mission accomplished!

Best song of the concert. Come on.
The entire album "Speaking in Tongues" is awesome.
He wanted to make his head appear smaller, and the best way to do that was make his suit larger. Lol, David Byrne rocks.
