- What is D-Beat?
D-Beat is a Drum style made popular back in the early '80s that helped influence punk bands around the world which then a sub-genre of Punk was now born called D-Beat. The name D-Beat is known to come from the band Discharge when it was first heard on Discharge's EP's especially the "Why?" EP. A little known fact is one of the first recordings of D-Beat came from the band The Buzzcocks from a song called "Tear Me Up" where you can clearly hear the sound of "D-Beat" as well other references such as in the song "Helpless" by Diamond Head. There are several other influences that weren't mentioned and there are probably more that are unknown including Motorhead's Phil Taylor (Animal).
In this video, I break down 3 categories that I simply use to help me identify the types of D-Beat styles that are still played to this day and have evolved from their traditional style.

"I'm not a D-beat Expert" says D-Beat Dad in an 8 minute video breaking down D-beat perfectly.
That said, thanks for this.
We mustn't forget "Philthy Animal" Taylor, he was an important drummer back in those days with this beat
Fucking legend. Anyone in doubt of his abilities need only listen to the version of Overkill off of No Sleep Till Hammersmith
Before joining Motorhead he was a skinhead and a football hooligan.
@@piotrb8434 luckily, that didn't carry into d-beat
@@Sergio-nb4hj He was a Leeds United supporter. Apparently his father bought him a drum kit to steer him away from trouble and the reason he was admitted into Motorhead is because he owned a car. Another famous rocker with a skinhead past is none other than Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne.
@@Sergio-nb4hj depends what kinda skinhead
Motörhead definitely deserve an honorable mention as one of D-beat's earliest innovators
Discharge were just trying to drum like Philthy Animal
Motorcharge
Back in th4 day we called that beat the “Motörhead gallop” orrrrr the D-Beat.
Couldn't agree more!
Wait. This dude didn't mention Motorhead at all? Not gonna keep listening to this video lol
The drumming just says "burnt banana bread" over and over again
I like Banana 🍞
repeatedly say pass the stinking butter really fast
Too perfect
The best form of banana bread
How do you come up with something like that? I'll never hear anything else the same again
Never in a million years would I have thought to see such a video.. 40 years ago when I started playing Hardcore ...its kinda surreal ..keep the faith young people !!!
“I’m not a D-Beat expert..”
...
Runs a D-Beat channel
ahhahahahah
Heavy music fans be humble
I‘m old and seeing D-Beat having a dedicated UA-camr, channel and videos brings tears to my eyes.
Loved your anthology selection!
Bro said he's not an expert on D-Beats and proceeds to break down the full history and nuances. Not to mention the channel name! I'd say you are an expert! Great video, and I certainly learned something about the d-beat.
Bathory's early Black Metal albums were totally influenced by D-Beat
Also Hellhammer/early Celtic Frost
@@benjaminherrera1987 absolutely
For sure. Venom as well.
All of early swedish extreme metal really.
yeah i heard this stuff recently and felt like its more or less just really raw punk lol
Was lucky to have seen Discharge in 83, 84 and 86. There was no other band like them, I know they've influenced so many bands. I didn't know I was listening to something called D beat, I just knew it kicked ass. Great video, learned alot.
"I'm not a D-Beat expert."

I would also add Motorhead. Ace of Spades is the origin and influence of births hardcore and Discharge. We have to thank Phil Taylor for D-BEat and the standard double bass drum of hardcore, noisecore. grindcore, speed/thrash/death metal.
I would agree. Phil Is one of my main influences in the style I personally feel I put into D-Beat drumming I've done. I was just trying to keep it simple with the definition of the "D" for D-Beat. Anything could be argued, there's probably a band somewhere that likely played it even earlier and we don't even know yet! Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much for giving Philthy credit. Once he got his grubby little paws on a second bass drum at the tail end of '78 he pretty much laid the groundwork for ALL double bass kick styles, including the inspiration he gave to Discharge for D-Beat. Philthy's high hat technique also continues to blow me away. He was a real innovator.
@@roelofzinn8227 I agree. I feel discharge took it to another level
@@reficul1984 Well, Discharge DID innovate with HOW they used the D-beat, and wrote so many kickass tunes around that pattern, so I agree with you. Philthy had it more in his bag of tricks as opposed to making it his signature sound. He came up with it, and Discharge made a thing out of it!
@@roelofzinn8227 o yeah we need to rename the D beat to the filthy beat.
saw the Buzzcocks in the thumbnail. Always impressed with Buzzcocks songwriting and original drummer. Thanks for the insightful video and making the connections. I’ll provide another example (I think): Pizza Tran by The Vandals.
Very well explained and structured video about D-Beat man, well done.
the swedish d beat feels like baby blast beats. I like it the most. nice job on explaining all this
Thank you
Whoa I never heard that Buzzcocks song before!
Don’t forget the varukers! Another d beat original

i thought i was too hip to learn anything from a youtube video about punkrock drums, but this was really well done, and i learned a lot. thanks
Thanks for the feedback! If you have some time this video further breaks down the actual playing: ua-cam.com/video/Ft-AJ1NRTTs/v-deo.html
Diamond Head - Helpless also another pre d-beat track from the late 70s
Rude Kids - Marquee, too
Exactly what I was thinking..the first thing that came to mind was Diamond Head.
yes just don't tell that to metalheads.. :D
@@Ragnarokr also Riot and Raibows
Cool to see some love for Cal and Discharge.
Love your channel so much, dude. Thank you for all the great content.
The Feelies - Crazy Rhythms (song was released in 1980 but had been developed sometime in the late 70s!)
Great video clear and informative.
I've been playing in punk bands for over a decade and there is not enough videos on this subject
Thanks for this info my dude. Turned me into some new bands that I'm really feeling!
Great video man. Super easy to follow and without a lot of the technical and music theory explanations on rhythm. Well done.
Great video and important musical history that is underappreciated. Cheers!
This is my kind of quarantine content. Love this video dude, good job
Martyrdöd Shirt! - Suscribed 🥳
Man, just wanted to say thank you for putting together this amazing channel!
I appreciate that! Thanks for checking it out.
Love the style of this video! I grew up on the other side of Berlin wall listening to punk and most of the songs had a similar beat. Great to know the origin!
Good to hear!
I start to making a crust project, coz see your contain, thank you so much for tutorial. Please don't stop make video🙏
Let's not forget New York's Alright... by FEAR for original d beats
Thanks for existing, bro!
This was an interesting video bro, thanks for the effort and time. I appreciate listening to your input.
Thanks for your input & watching. It's interesting this video made this a "channel"
Didn’t notice that song by the buzzcocks, cheers for the background info and actually playing it right as a fellow drummer!
Thanks!
This is an awesome video. It's really cool drumming style that could be used in alot of genres leaning towards the heavier side of music
Glad you liked it. A lot of bands do use it in heavier genres some aware of it, most unaware of it.
Thank you very much, very informative but casual video!
This was legitness 🤘 Thank you for this.
Thanks for introducing me to tragedy, they are sic.
Actually the D-beat (the original and extremely frequent old school hardcore beat) is played with evenly placed crash hits that pulse on the 4th-beats like a metronome in 4/4. So, 1st and 2nd crash is played on the kick and snare. 2nd and 3rd off-beat kicks (in 8th notes) are placed on each side of the 3rd crash and the 4th crash is played on the 4th quarter note (second time the snare is played). I've played with various HC bands in the 80s, sometimes drumming myself. I've also studied Garry Maloney's style for safety's sake before making this comment, and it checks out! Last but not least, I love your drumming! Thanks for uploading!
It's a 3/4.
@@leeb7468 3/4 is a 3 beat per measure. The beat in this video is in 4/4 regardless of your distribution of the beat within the measure.
The term "d-beat" was coined to describe Dave Ellesmere's playing style, not Garry Maloney. You can hear Dave on the Why EP
@@Sergio-nb4hj I tried to find a source for that, but I can only find D-beat as short for Discharge beat
Actually prior to those you mentioned, Travis Barker was an early innovator of the D Beat style. You can hear it on the Blink 182 demos (ultra rare and yes, I do have the original 7" pressings)... Tired of people not giving credit where its due
Good to see someone opens up on d-beat.
Thanks for sharing this knowledge!
Thanks for watching!
This is a great video, I’ve been playing guitar and writing riffs and I’ve been inspired to get a kit now and do a one man band thing like Besthöven. Excited! Props on the channel, keep it going mate! Cheers!
Happy to hear that! That would be a fun project. Good luck!
Cool video man. Love hard music of most kinds. Ive played guitar for half my life and now I'm starting to pick up the drums and this helped me understand the beats I like that I could never describe and I Thank you for that
Thats great to hear Ryan. Thanks for the feedback.
great video man, lots of useful information. Like you say, all around the world musicians have picked up the d-beat and played it creating new different styles
Thank you. Correct, that's why I wouldn't point to anyone saying one way is better than another. Its all about personal opinion of what you like. I just wanted to point out a lot of great drummers over the years have evolved it past its simplicity and still sounds great!
That Martyrdod shirt though. 🥰🥰🥰🥰
D beat could get a little tricky because you gotta be spot on with the kick drum parts
thanks, that was informative! i never really understood how to play that beat
The earliest recording of d-beat drumming I heard on Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsys/Fillmore East concerts played by Buddy Miles
I'd always thought it came from most directly from Phil Taylor of Motorhead, a lot of punk drummers wanted to emulated his style and Discharge was the band that made it most popular.
I would agree! As I mentioned on the video there are probably several people who played it way before. I will be making a video of Helpless by Diamond Head whom recorded that song in 1978 and it was D-Beat drums for sure!
very cool explanation. great content.
6:20, he’s using full-on wrist, no bounces or open fingers, damn!!! That’s wicked fast, my man! Great video!
Sorry to sound like an asshole, but it looks edited. For a pure explanation/example point of view there's no problem in tweaking up the tempo in postproduction, but it seems disingenuous not to mention the speedup.
Great choice of d-beat bands, but you got me with the Martyrdöd shirt!!
i love the saxophone you added at 4:55 and 6:45. makes the d beat more aggressive ;)
New sub.. cheers from Orange County California 🇺🇸... Always find new music
It's fairly simple, the down down, up up, down strumming pattern used for moderate paced (130 to 180 bpm) punk songs is matched perfectly by that beat. It was one of the first things I tried to learn on drums when my drummer died and so my band became a thing of the past.
Nice T-shirt man!!
Huh, I didn't realize until now just how much you can hear d-beat in OSDM. I've always heard about d-beat/crust punk having a huge influence on death metal but didn't realize just how much until now! Not only in the drum styles- a lot of these bands are using a very similar vocal style as you can hear in early Death, Entombed, and Gorguts albums.
i do love classic d-beat a lot. but one of my favorite ways to play it is with a closed hi-hat, something about that sound is always nice
Great video! Thank you.
I swear I’ve heard some D-Beat infulence in Grindcore, really good drum style
Definitely!
Absolutely there is! A lot of breakdowns are i D-beat, before switching back to blast beats for accentuated feel
isn't grindcore just some sort of faster punk or deathmetal
@@smievil it's faster punk depends which country you're talking about American grindcore from my understanding takes more influence from death metal and thrash while grindcore from the uk takes more of it's roots from crust punk
@@edgeasswipeshitfuckproductions Ultra violent punk > simplified death metal any day (at least for me)
Luckily there was an extreme punk style that developed around the same time on the US West Coast that was very similar to grindcore (powerviolence!)
Great video thanks! 👍👍👍
Thank you for the education! Definitely knew the sound but not what it was called.
Thanks for your Martyrdod tip, didn't know them but now i do.

NICE INFO!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I ended up here because I searched for D-beat after listening to "Power" by Agnostic Front. I realized while listening to it that the lyric "ultimate discharge" is a nod to the band (it's got the chorus-y guitars in it too). It only took me 30 years to get it 😐
Great username btw!
You're just a good drummer who plays the same beat at different tempos. Love it.
always happy to hear anyone mention Tragedy anywhere lol.
Tragedy is great
Good stuff love Discharge
Great stuff me grow ING up in the late 80s and 90s i knew Discharge was going to make an impact how they play " raw" (Hans raw punk) there always been a favorite of mine ...cheers from South Central L.A bro keep it up bro👍
Cool shirt man. I love that band!

You’re awesome man, love this tipe of bands and genre, i thing a video explaining the influence of d beat in thrash metal it’ll be great. Cheers From México
Great suggestion. Thabks for the feedback!
Big ups from an old hip hop head ( atleast what people think) and a d beat punk lover from the cradle .
Very cool and very informative !!
Awesome, thanks!
A demo of 'You Tear Me Up' was recorded in 1976 and released on the 'Time's Up' album
Feel free to call "Skitsystem" "Shit System", that's all it means. As a d-beat enthusiast, I'm very happy to have found this channel, great stuff!
in swedish it's even pronounced shitsystem, i don't know why, but in some cases they spell out k as h
think sk in skitsystem is pronounced differently that sh
some people get pretty pissed when you pronounce "shell" like you pronounce shift, think short, shell, shift has one way to pronounce them.
or i think shit pronounced with the tongue in front of mouth while skit would be more in the back of the mouth.
This guys so chill. Then he puts on the skull busting beatz!
He reminds me of Freddie Mercury, he should play him in a movie sometime
Crasher crust !!! Love this channel

Sick video, I don’t even play drums but this was dope asf.
Thanks!
I bought "Realities of war" when it came out but had no idea about that Buzzcocks track.
Great lesson man, but damn did you pull off that mustache really well 👍👍
I find it quite interesting to learn there is a real technique to what sounds like a simple/primitive drumming style.
I also think the most useful tip for anyone is just practice. Anyone can learn to do just about anything- we've seen quadriplegics paint beautiful paintings- it really is a matter of putting in the work. the kid who doesnt want to do his math homework is not going to get good grades on his math test- but the one who does, will.
great video this..thanls alot
Thanks!
My playlists switching from Buzzcocks to napalm death
It be like that
Nice!
congratulations for your channel bro! it is also worth noting that the Hi-hat and ride pattern of d-beat had an influence on drummers from Thrash bands like Sodom on the albums Persecution Mania and Agent Orange and also Sepultura on the album beneath the Remains and Arise, as well as groups like Cannibal Corpse on albums Eaten back to life and butchered at birth and many others band. And obviously also on Grindcore. As I said, only the hi-hat and ride pattern and not the original rhythm.
Glad this popped up. Looking forward to someone covering some good bands!
Thank you!

its so funny. I play double bass gravity blasts in my metal band. Just joined a punk band and they broke me with this beat:Dd
