I used the Maguires headlight restoration kit... Comes with 1800 up to 3000 sanding pads and then a light compound 🙌 worked a treat... Need to protect it now 🙌 thanks for the info 👌
The only video that taught me how to blacken my rubber seal that was discolored white. Thanks! I used my polishing compound to remove the upper layer and it revealed the black underneath. I tried for years without success and I was about to my new set of molding trim.
Hey Phil, I think your use of the 'scuffy pad' first, then using the '0000' steel wool to refine the rubber works terrific. Great tip on an otherwise underused talent!
Great to see the results, just remember to use a compound that doesn't stain trim. Mould causes the rubber to become pitted so removing the top layer is the only real option. Good work, keep it up and thanks for sharing
I use Mothers Mag and wheel polish and a soft terry cloth towel. Works on my '91 4Runner and the 2005 Cadillac STS rubber trim. Will not hurt paint or glass. I then top coat it with Mothers Back to Black. It has no colorant and lasts longer than other brands I've tried. If the rubber is etched it just takes more rubbing, but it leaves no scratches and a glossy finish that sheds water better.
I used the steel wool pad with the same compound on my 2010 Challenger that was all pitted and rough and it came out so good!! I followed all of your steps and it’s night and day how the rubber looks now. 👍👍👍
Tea tree oil works and will kill everything without messing up the trim. I applied twice and those spots are about 85% gone will do another treatment and then use a trim restorer.
Loved the content...thankyou for sharing your method...I Have an old but beautiful Honda prelude..I use a similar method as your self but use engine oil as a lubricant and cleaning agent..It makes the rubber quite supple too!
Great info! Thank you so much for posting this video! I have this issue with my 2013 Challenger. I was worried I was going to have to replace all the trim. Again, thank you so much!
Not related to rubber, but since you used the "0000" steel wool, it works WONDERS on chrome! On my 2022 BMW motorcycle, I use a light touch with a dry "0000" steel wool on my chrome surfaces, and it removes bugs, spots, etc., like magic. For rusty chrome, WD-40 and "0000" steel wool helps to remove the rust and polish the chrome. I did this with my 1976 Honda CB500t to great effect.
Bravo. I have a 1995 Range Rover classic and the door window trim looks just like your Toyota. Problem is my trim is no longer available OEM or Aftermarket. Never thought of using polishing compound to take the outer layer off.
Love your videos and I’m learning a lot with you, thank you for your hard work! I use black shoes wax on trims, rubber, plastic and leathers and works like dream! Apply the shoes wax let it seat than remove the excess than with dry towel polish it.
HUGE difference Phil and great video! The rubber trim can be such a pain to get that good looking. Great tips and very informative video I enjoyed every minute of it. 🐝
So much better Phil my ram had the same issue and I used Mother's heavy duty trim cleaner, some simple green, steamer with brush attachment, elbow grease. Needless to say gotta try this.
@@jimmynickels6248 Hi Jimmy! The Cerakote is working fine on the black rubber trim on my rear bumper. I haven't had any issues with it and applied it to my car's bumper over a month ago.
Nice work. I did this few years back but I used soapy water with autobody red scotch pad, then followed it up with 1500 and then 2500 sand paper. Looked smooth and shiny. I'm not sure how long it looked good though as I didnt put any protection on it and I sold the car shortly after
Word of warning - These rubber trims can be surprisingly very thin on the corners. I followed a guide to abrade trim mould on my Honda Prelude many years ago, using fine emery paper, yet managed to hit bare metal on the trim corners very quickly, before I had even removed most of the mould: had to buy new trim pieces in the end. I was fairly careful and only removed a fraction of a mm before I hit metal, so consider starting with a magic eraser sponge or 3000 grit emery paper and strong degreaser or suitable polish.
Worked great for me with very little effort (mine were not too bad). I used the finer grade red scotch brite cloth/pad (320 grade) with some Meguiars stage 1 paint cleaner polish (quick detailer spray worked as well) and had no visible scratches at all. Finished with some Autoglym (UK brand) plastic/rubber gel cleaner/protectant. Buffed off any smears on glass and paintwork with clean microfiber cloth.
Thanks bro! Just bought a car that’s absolutely beautiful (2022 Mazda MX-5 ND RF) except the weather stripping is all pitted and stained looking. Going to do this ASAP.
Great Video!! Phillip, I Was Wondering if Spray Nine Heavy Duty Cleaner Might Work As Well?.. I Also Came Across A Video By Chelsea's Attention To Details, She Used it To Remove Mold On Rubber Trim.
That turned out great. The 3800 polish you used is that the super finish plus? Didn't see a link for it. I am going to try this on my 1993 Toyota Supra quarter window trim it looks just like your car did. New glass is $600 so if this works it saves me from buying new windows. Thanks
Another great option my friend. I never would of thought of the green scotch brite pad. I normally use a magic eraser with an apc or adams tire and rubber cleaner. That does the trick every time. But to add another option is always great. I wonder if the white scotch brite pad would work just as well? Came out great
Start with the finer 320 grade red pad if they are not too bad. They are finer and leave no scratches.....just did mine, they came up like new...green is 100 grade, I'd only use them if the red failed to remove.
Phil another home run video for me. You have a very creative mind that comes up with "genius" ideas. I have been good at washing, polishing, waxing, and coating accompanied with general interior cleaning, but I just don't have any experience in really cleaning cars in so many areas that you have addressed in your videos, especially with the issue you are addressing today. So, for my "Estimating or guestimating" knowledge book at this point for me, how long would you expect a job like this to take for a sedan and an average size SUV? Also how long did it actually take you on this vehicle? My original thought is to double the time you estimate for me initially, and only charge for the time it would've taken you because I am not going to make my clients pay for my education. This is a "learn through teaching, mistakes, and ah-ha moments" for me. Actually, there are a lot of videos that I need to start asking you this same question so I can build up my "Estimator" data spreadsheet. Thank you again for all you do for us.
Great video. I was able to remove the mold and oxidation from my Toyota tundra rear window trim, but within a month and a half the marks seem to come back. What would be a good sealant or something to prevent the mold from coming back. The only thing I’ve tried so far is coating the trim with Beadmaker but it doesn’t seem to be helping.

Hey Phil, great video! If a non-ceramic trim restorer such as Solution Finish is used, do you apply any kind of sealer over it? Any other brands you recommend?
Hi. Thanks! Yes you can apply something like Lithium Trim Serum or AM Trim. But the best option would be to use a ceramic trim coating after the Solution Finish.
Finally, someone working on older trim. Question though. The black on the door pillars how would you coat those? They feel like plastic but have a different feel from all the other trim. I'm planning on coating my Rav4 when it starts warming up and I want to make sure anything plastic is taken care of before putting CSL on everything.
It’s glossy just like the sequoia smooth and shiny but feels like plastic not metal. It’s not faded like all the rest of the plastic so maybe I’ll just coat it and call it good.
Ah ok. So it’s most likely the black gloss pillars. Even though they are plastic underneath they are usually still paint d and clear coat led like normal paint so you can treat them paint. Polish and use a paint ceramic coating. 😎👍🏼
I worked for a rubber company for 3 yrs every day at work we sanded rubber. We also made a lot of mouldings for windows of planes and seals and lots more for the automotive and aircraft industry. The lines are part of the moulding process. It’s the machine lines in the molds if they are not polished as well as the milling of the rubber before it goes in the molds. You are just scavenging the dried out surface. Not sure why people freak out!
@@MirandaDetailing and they type of rubber(S) in mouldings is very temperature and chemical resistant. It’s not soft gum type of rubber. That type of rubber would go all soft and gooey!

Hey Phil. This is a great tip. Thanks for taking the time to put this together. I'm curious about the longevity of this process. Do you think youight be able to do a follow up? Hi. I since sold that vehicle a few years ago. But at the time of selling it the trim looked perfect still! We use a few different trim coatings but our favorite is Gtechniq’s c4 trim coating.
Yes, rubber is easier to clean removing that top layer, just like doing it on oxidized paint after washing and decontaminating it. Phil, one thing I have done and also worked for me was the Griot's Garage Speed Shine or Doctor Mecánico which is a locally made Multi Purpose cleaner which is soapy since are used as lubricants to remove all that filthy top layer and I had them available at Advanced Auto. Also the scuffy pad. Thanks for your review video and great to know about that polish from Xtreme solutions to use it for that too.👌👍🇵🇷

Hi. Well mold odor is a completely different thing all together. That want be caused by outside mold on the vehicle. You can try these products biobombs.com
Thanks for the video and tips! I'm going to try mine with the window down, hoping that polishing and restoring the inner lip that touches the glass will help restore a more even glass wiping action when the window goes down and up for clearing fog etc.
Sorry, kind of skipped to the process. Did you consider magic eraser? If it is effective against the oxidation and mold, could forego masking tape step. Wont abrade paint or metal trim on older vehicles. Just hit the paint around the trim with a detailer or spray wax afterwards if worried about the protection, sooner or later.
Oh yeah I’m sure that could work also. But the eraser tends to deteriorate and fall apart when put pressure is applied to it. I’ve tried it and it’s ok but the scuff pads and steel wool won’t fall apart like the eraser will.
You’re welcome. The trim shine would definitely make it look great for a few weeks. The ceramic coating we used should last up to 2 years hopefully. It doesn’t need to be a coating with a dye in it. It can be any trim coating. I just happened to have this one.
It’s a ceramic coating. They are small bottles and usually range in price from $50-$100 sometimes. But they are extremely durable protection. Usually years and not just months or weeks
Well like I mentioned I have seen lines like that in brand new rubber trim. It’s bot just becasue of the steel wool. Honestly it’s not noticeable to the eyes. The close up shots make it more noticeable. But despite that for old rubber trim this what I would do for a customers vehicle. It worked out great! 😎👍🏼
This is great! Most of the other UA-cam detailers work on new cars or completely avoid bringing up the rubber trim on their videos. Keep it up!!

@@MirandaDetailing Thanks Phil keep up the good work 👉👍🥊
hey phil ! what about apc and steam ? do you think it will work on it ?
Hi. I’ve tried just APC and steam and it doesn’t work for heavy mildew build up. It needs abrasive action to remove the top layer of mildew.
@@MirandaDetailing okay ! thanks for the answer
Do you think I will be Able to get spray paint residue on that rubber?
Hi. Are you asking if the trim can be painted? If so yes it could.
Thanks for Tip! You think Trim Shine may work or you prefer the dye? Great video as always ☺️
You’re welcome. The trim shine would definitely make it look great for a few weeks. The ceramic coating we used should last up to 2 years hopefully. It doesn’t need to be a coating with a dye in it. It can be any trim coating. I just happened to have this one.
Awesome.. Ceremic coating it is! It looks great too!
I wonder if after cleaning it you could use mineral spirits to help with those lines.
Yeah I tried that but honestly the lines are not noticeable at all. It’s not a big deal at all. It still looks awesome.
I have tan side panel trim that has faded also.
will this work the same?
thanks, Love your videos
Hi If its uncoated rubber then it should, what's the make and model?
02 Chevy 2500hd PU 4 door,
I will try it then let you know how I do.
Thanks
Whats the name of the coating you used after you did the whole cleaning process on min 13:01 ? Thanks in advanced
Hi. Sorry I didn’t link it in the description. It’s this. amzn.to/3sQL4si
Exactly
@@MirandaDetailingseriously 60-70 dollars a bottle ?
It’s a ceramic coating. They are small bottles and usually range in price from $50-$100 sometimes. But they are extremely durable protection. Usually years and not just months or weeks
what an improvement 👍
If there was lines left over . What if you took a 3000 grit sandpaper to further refine the lines! Thanks guys
@@MirandaDetailing the camera definitely shows more, the human eye isn’t going to catch that. It’s not a show car .
Totally!
Good job!
Phil does the pinnacle streak down the door after a rain?
Hi. Nope. It’s a ceramic coating and not a dressing so once it cures it’s set. Pretty awesome stuff.
