Sic's Space what really!? Though I feel like the Planet X preceptor is far more superior to this one, about the size of a voyager, has a bunch of accessories (sniper rifle, duel pistols and a pair of X2 scrapmakers!) and of course he keeps his tank mode
As someone who doesn't mind complicated transformations all that much when done right even I have to agree that RTS Perceptor's transformation wasn't properly thought out at all. In the movie toyline's defense since their designs are more complicated then other series it makes sense for them to have more complicated transformation whenever they get the chance to though try to apply it to lines that may not need it as much if at all and it shows how messy it can get. There are times where they managed to make it work but others like RTs Perceptor not so much.
This mode is more appropriate for Perceptor than you think, TJ. This is basically a G1 retool of what Animated Perceptor was supposed to turn into if he was on Earth. Search TFA Perceptor on Google images to see what I mean.
I'm wondering if Takara's version will have the head be Nijika. I'm kinda surprised it doesnt look like her already considering some of the odd homages the heads are getting... Like Twinfero's head being a battlebeast, Sixshot's head being an obscure character from the Headmaster Anime, then there is Lione and Shuffler gettign homages...
I have two of these: one that's always in robot mode and one that's a junker that's always in vehicle mode, just so I don't have to transform a Perceptor. I can only hope the Titans Return Perceptor will have a less painfully complicated transformation.
Apparently the MR 51409 miiiight be a reference to Bill Rawley's daughter's birthday according to the TF Wiki... though this has not been confirmed. I'm a good Google searcher. :D
When I saw Perceptor my first thought was 'Augh, I hate transforming this toy' :p I tried to turn it into vehicle mode to put it in storage and gave up halfway. Why do I even keep it anyway...
The ironic thing about what you said at the beginning? He's being released in the Titans Returns line. His alt mode? A telescope. As long as there is a Paul Eiding, Perceptor will be relevant.
I love this figure so much it was the last thing my grandad got me before he past away then my mum lost it when we moved house still looking for one for a good price
Joe Bowditch go to Transformerland you can probally bargain with matt being the guy who runs the site because I got the rare CW First Aid for 35 instead of everywhere else's 45+ USD
This Perceptor's robot mode looks like it's aesthetics were based on the Energon line... it might be it's detail molding, or it could be because it's body looks like a "shirt" already. Wonder if he has any tabs on him to connect to a "pants" bot. :P
i hear ya on movie toys. i dont have alot of my movie bots anymore (sold the ones i dont like and lost or broke the others, only kept a few). but bumblebee was a prime example.
Hey Tj, not sure if you're still replying to comments on this video or not, but there's something I was wondering if you could help me out with considering your "Toy-guro" status with the transforming genre. Essentially, I've been searching for a certain line of toys for years now, the concept is a little fuzzy in my mind, but from what I can remember...they were transforming, mechanical dinosaurs that became vehicles of sorts. I'm unable to recall if the things had "pilots" or not, but it was around the mid 2000's ...possibly 2004-2006 when I remember seeing them. It seemed like the sort of line that'd have a tv show, but I am not sure if it did. The only specific toy one I know of was a yellow dimetrodon...though I'm not sure if that's much help. Looking through the different toylines over Wikipedia and such, I've had no luck; so if you could possibly shed some light on this, I'd be very grateful.
The only thing that immediately comes to mind is Switch & Go Dinos, they're just like you describe but those were far more recent, starting in 2012, and they had a yellow stegosaurus, but not a dimetrodon. Honestly not sure about a mid 2000s version.
TJOmega Those wouldn't be it, but thank you anyway. The only store I remember seeing them was about 2005 Toys R Us...and that's it. Never could remember the name, but the figures had an anime styling if memory serves.
Actually my fault there, I reset my white balance for a different shot and forgot to set it back, so the colors got skewed. Usually I keep the lighting and settings balanced to make sure it's getting an accurate color.
Wish I'd seen this video before I picked up mine. I usually like more complex transformations, but I hate transforming this guy. There are way too many clearence issues, and the backpack and shoulders don't lock in. Fun fact, he has elements of his animated counterpart, as the halftrack is what he would turn into in season 4. I think that's also where they may have taken inspiration for the face, as I think it barely resembles the G1 cartoon, but with the long nose, small eyes and lack of expression he shares with the animated design.
better off going for masterpiece transformers, even eladers like cw megatron I can transform with my eyes closed yet I always struggle with mp ultra magnus (doesn't apply to all of course)
i like figures from almost all lines, but since cybertron, then movie, and rotf dotm and in between, complicated trasnformations have been the ones i like the most, being classic/universe/etc, movie, or whatever
Love the truck mode HATE the bot mode HATE the transformation, recently put him in a pile of transformers I wanna sell, there's gotta be someone that wants one huh?
Jarmo Verriet skinny thighs, , short body, a backpack that Like TJ said contains the front of the car mode while the legs contain the rest that also doesn't peg on securely, a mopey face etc etc, I like my robots to have better proportions and better engineering. The Titans Return Perceptor looks fantastic
***** I'm fine with all of that except for thr thighs and the whole backpack deal thing. You mentioned wanting to sell him, how much do you want for it?
I really don't see the point of the Headmasters at all, in the 80s version inserting the head would open a secret panel & make it's power show up. On the new one it's just a different place to put a Minicon.
Why is having the vehicle being one solid color a bad thing? Most cars and trucks are one solid color.
I spoke to Paul Eiding (G1 Perceptor) & he also doesn't like this toy "it's too difficult"
Sic's Space what really!? Though I feel like the Planet X preceptor is far more superior to this one, about the size of a voyager, has a bunch of accessories (sniper rifle, duel pistols and a pair of X2 scrapmakers!) and of course he keeps his tank mode
Did you ask him to yell "Snake, what happened? Snake?! SNAAAAAAAAKE!!"
Grandpa Max was Perceptor?? Huh, small world.
I'm getting one

I absolutely love how this guy looks.
I agree with you 100% how hard and frustrating it is to transform it. Thanks for covering it for us and going through it.
im excited for the tr perceptor. i was surprised that they didnt just make him a tank when he came out.
I'm wondering if Takara's version will have the head be Nijika. I'm kinda surprised it doesnt look like her already considering some of the odd homages the heads are getting... Its a pretty simple transformation
Apparently the MR 51409 miiiight be a reference to Bill Rawley's daughter's birthday according to the TF Wiki... though this has not been confirmed. I'm a good Google searcher. :D
And by that it's also a reference to Rawley himself, as his first Transformers toy was apparently G1 Perceptor. Nice touch =)
Would you please review transmetal wapinator.
When I saw Perceptor my first thought was 'Augh, I hate transforming this toy' :p I tried to turn it into vehicle mode to put it in storage and gave up halfway.
Why do I even keep it anyway...

The backpack and shoulders are awful on mine too. I feel like I'm going to break something trying to squish the front of the vehicle against his back.
Thank you Titans Return, hopefully a simple transformation is to come.
thank God for Titans return at least that one is G1 accurate
He really does look good!
Man, why does the poor guy's face make me think of the lyrics
"Hello, darkness my old friend, I've come to talk with you again"
Transformation is difficult, I agree, but looking back I dig the robot mode?
can't wait for the Titan returns version of it
I love this figure so much it was the last thing my grandad got me before he past away then my mum lost it when we moved house still looking for one for a good price
Joe Bowditch go to Transformerland you can probally bargain with matt being the guy who runs the site because I got the rare CW First Aid for 35 instead of everywhere else's 45+ USD
If you are still taking requests, can you do Transmetal Airrazor, Rhinox or Prmal?
Ironic that they made him a half-track truck with the treads as a reference to the g1's "3rd" tank mode.
energon downshift?
This Perceptor's robot mode looks like it's aesthetics were based on the Energon line... it might be it's detail molding, or it could be because it's body looks like a "shirt" already. Wonder if he has any tabs on him to connect to a "pants" bot. :P
Honestly, the problem isn't so much the transformation being too complex, it's that there's just not enough damn clearance and it's too fiddly
but I do like this version it gives more verity for the character
Mine had the same problems with this figure and lose hips as well. That is why I eventually sold him.
Combiner wars Starscream's arms (at least mine) also suffer from loose arm tabs as well, his crotchplate also suffers from this as well
i hear ya on movie toys. i dont have alot of my movie bots anymore (sold the ones i dont like and lost or broke the others, only kept a few). but bumblebee was a prime example.

TJOmega Ah! Nevermind, it was the D.I.C.E. Dinobreakers toyline...literally took me two years of searching to find them again. Thank you anyway, TJ.
the face has always reminded me of postman pat for some reason
Perceptor's expression is stern because he got shrunk down to deluxe size and turned in to a truck...
You say red. The camera shows pink. Am I missing something?
lighting
and how the recording translates colors.
Actually my fault there, I reset my white balance for a different shot and forgot to set it back, so the colors got skewed. Usually I keep the lighting and settings balanced to make sure it's getting an accurate color.
tj is that your first jump cut in random review

Love the toy. Hate the transformation.
i miss the complicated movieverse transformations, im tired of the simplified boring figures we got in the last 3-4 years
better off going for masterpiece transformers, even eladers like cw megatron I can transform with my eyes closed yet I always struggle with mp ultra magnus (doesn't apply to all of course)
FPrimusUnicron I think it fits with the G1 styled figures. More complicated transformations would be overcomplicating it.
i like figures from almost all lines, but since cybertron, then movie, and rotf dotm and in between, complicated trasnformations have been the ones i like the most, being classic/universe/etc, movie, or whatever
FPrimusUnicron Don't get me wrong, i love complex transformations, but it just doesn't fit with what Combiner Wars and Titans Return is trying to do.
Love the truck mode HATE the bot mode HATE the transformation, recently put him in a pile of transformers I wanna sell, there's gotta be someone that wants one huh?
shredBucketheadshred Why do you hate the bot mode?

Jarmo Verriet
well I'm Australian so any price would be dwarfed by the shipping unless you too are in this part of the world so....:(
***** 'fraid not. Shame, i really do like this figure.
ExAid's car
well I wish he wasn't a head master
nemesis prime production Why does it matter? I really don't understand what's the problem with everyone being s Headmaster.
Lose the head, ruin the toy.
Dat Bastard Oni People are responsible adults. I doubt anyone who's over the age of 7 will lose the buggers.
I was opposed to the concept at first, and never really understood why. They've grown on me, but it's not like something happened to change my mind.
I really don't see the point of the Headmasters at all, in the 80s version inserting the head would open a secret panel & make it's power show up. On the new one it's just a different place to put a Minicon.
I'm not going to buy this toy
