Nice clean build,i like it.Just built a LTR hybrid with the newer crf 450 engine. Also went w Factory 43 nerfs and bumpers, sweet design, and yes frameguards and more from Fourwerx :)
Great video, I just sold my Ltr after 8 years and am making the switch to Yam also. I'm looking at the new 20s or a clean 18+ nicely equipped. I like a mx setup but ride mostly trails. The Ltr was such a badass quad, never a complaint from the stock suspension on it unlike a some others. You're spot on about how predictable they are in the corners, grip and rip but a little hard to break loose on demand. Keep up the great vids!
I've really enjoyed making the transition. The LT-R was such a comfortable and fun quad to ride, and I agree the stock suspension could be made to work really well. It's funny, there are guys who race both the Yamaha and Suzuki at the pro level locally here on stock suspension and have no trouble with it. With this Yamaha I'll likely look into having the stock shocks rebuilt and maybe do a different link in the rear. With full adjustment and kashima coated parts, the stock KYB stuff deserves a lot of credit. The biggest thing I noticed switching to the Yamaha was actually how much easier it is to work on. Everything is a lot more simple and there's a lot less to go wrong. Hopefully it's more reliable too!
Love it! I just sold my trx 450 xc build and Im going to get this machine now! Just sick of having a bike thats 12 years old and I feel handling isnt the best... Had a ds 450 2015 bone stock and was the best handling machine so far. Great video
If you have a TRX450R You should just stay away from the YFZ450's I'm telling you now don't get one... You'll just be wasting your money, get an 06 or newer TRX450R I say this because the YFZ450 is WAY over priced and way over enginerred. By the time you're done paying for the Brand New YFZ450R ($12,000 or more) you can have a 06+ TRX450ER ($4000 used or $8000 Brand new) a Brand new one just the 2014 Model... I'd still rather buy used and biuld the motor. Put $2500 Into the motor and have 55 to 60 ish HP and the twice the reliability also the simplicity of the TRX450R/ER engines are 100 times better. Now Adding up a used TRX450ER with good mods you're looking at $6500 Bucks spent in total... Now go to the dunes or any race track and you're beating every other bike out there. The TRX450ER with a Dasa, Bored Carb, Ported Head and a good cam will make close to 60HP to many people jump on the YFZ450 just because of the way it looks. Rather annoying in my opinion.
Awesome! I hope you enjoy it, I definitely love mine. Didn't take much to make it really comfortable, and like you said, it really makes a difference having something newer.
@@TRX450RVlogger the Yamaha YFZ450R Is by far the best box stock race ready quad ever avail from a dealer. Fact. Your trying to influence a guys decision in the wrong way. 100% . Not to mention we all want manufacturers to bring back sport/race ready quads! Buying a used beat up ole TRX450R isn't helping that whatsoever. The TRX450R was discontinued because it didn't sell as well as the Yamaha. The TRX was a good quad but the YFZ is superior in nearly every way. Btw, I own an '11 YFZ450R & '21 Raptor 700R-SE. Both bought new. My '11 has been well maintained of course & never failed me. I ride it hard . It still feels fresh w/ approx 50hrs according to my hr meter. Again it's cool you love the TRX but right now we need as many new YFZ sales as possible to get other manufacturers like Honda, Kawasaki, Polaris, KTM etc bk on board. #SaveSportQuads
I don't understand the loud the BETTER exhaust game!? With it harder to find legal areas to ride in some places & the PUSH for electric everything. I will run my stock system w/maybe rossier engineering silencer..maybe not. Got some intake work done ..& great maintenance/good fuels has my '10 YFZ450 (less than 10hrs!) running great .👍

you want to get a better case saver that covers the whole front sprocket what happened to me is the chain got jammed up in between the front sprocket and the swing arm bolt and it destroyed the whole engine also get after market coolant tubes mine got a whole in them and coolant spilled everywhere when I was riding
Austin Rohr well I had a Raptor back when they were 660cc and I loved it so I got a new one in January. I didn’t think there was no better bike for the woods and don’t get me wrong it’s awesome and easier to ride in the woods. I will say since I got the 450 I only been on one ride with it but I really really like how stable it is. I think I’m kinda switching my thoughts on it and I might like it better than the Raptor.
@@jacobhenson3952 That makes sense! I could certainly see how they'd feel a little top heavy. I've always been curious what the 700 would be like if it were wider and lower (like a long-travel set-up, for example)
Thanks! I've definitely got the suspension working good right now. I'll probably do some more fine tuning with the ride height as it's sitting a little low, but I've got a few races under my belt with the current setting and it's working really well so I'll keep running it as is for now.
Awesome video and review of your modifications! I saw you listed your vortex settings on map 9 and 5,5,6. Are they still set the same? You posted the settings two years ago. Just wanted to see how it affected durability. Thank you I also loved how clean and shiny your bike was. What products did you use? Sc1?
Thank you! I ran those settings for 27 hours. After that, I bumped the compression up, had head work done, and made a few other changes. Doing that required the settings to be changed and we did all of that on the dyno. That said, the motor was in great shape at 27 hours when we opened it up and I wouldn't have any concerns running those settings on a relatively stock Yamaha. If anything it's a touch on the rich side but not enough to be a problem. For cleaning it up I use SC1 underneath the fenders and on the hard parts, but for the plastics themselves I prefer to use Yamacoat. It's quite a bit different, you have to actually treat it more like a polish and wipe it down with a microfiber. It gives it a "new" look but doesn't make the bike feel greasy. And it comes off with a little contact cleaner if you need to apply graphics/stickers later on whereas SC1 can make that a real challenge once you've used it a few times.
sweet set up dude . im about to buy a new yamaha . oh and if you go with a arms that has the ltr set up , it handles better than anything . i rode Alan Myers 2019 season bike with the ltr front end , it handles like a dream and is easy to over jump stuff with the power it makes . i might make a video of me riding it next time , my buddy owns it now .
They're made by a company called Visual 41. Easiest way to find them is through Instagram! For the clutch part numbers, you need the two listed below. Everything else in the newer style clutch fits perfectly. BASKET - 18P-16150-00-00 THRUST WASHER - 5XD-16154-00-00 You may also want to replace this lock washer... 90215-20005-00
Yes! It's in the parts list in the pinned comment. The part #'s as well as a link to BNR's ready to go kit are listed. Last time I saw, BNR was out of stock though. Just copy those part #'s into Google and you should find several sites selling genuine OEM Yamaha parts. Rocky Mountain ATV/MC is my go-to for price and shipping speed, but Motosport and Partzilla aren't bad either. Or your local Yamaha dealer can order them for you.
That's not the case with these. Only the 2006 and older carbureted YFZs had oiling issues. On a 2020, you do have a few areas of concern. The OEM clutch basket is the biggest one. Seems to be a 2017+ issue despite no changes since 2011 in the design. You need a 2009-2010 YFZ450R basket and thrust washer, and then you're set. Other than that, they run pretty lean from the factory and really benefit from an AIS delete, oil breather box, and ECU upgrade (Vortex or send the OEM to someone to be flashed). Lastly, the stock timing and inspection plugs on the left hand side of the motor are plastic and tend to come loose. Replacing them with an aluminum set is cheap and effective.
@@AustinRohr for sure bro thanks a lot I’ve learned a lot just watching your videos I’m new to this so I was a Lil concerned but watching your videos helped me out a lot! My new favorite UA-cam channel 🙌🏼

@@AustinRohr thanks man, there's only a few tracks left in Maine. I don't have any interest in racing but would have a little spot to rip around on. Thank you for the info.
I'm looking to get a yfz450 and I'm making a list of the mods you've made on your yfz but do the 2021 yfzs still have the clutch basket issues? And I might change a few upgrades to match my riding and tracks I'll be racing on since I'll be racing on motocross tracks
As far as I'm aware, they still do and will continue to unless Yamaha changes the design. Without competition on the market, it's hard to see Yamaha doing so.
Nice little track ya got! Quads lookn good the only thing i will say is spend the extra for a glann innovation case saver if you drop my name they will hook you up!
Hey killer quad !!! Question about the water hose next to the header . Did you change that out ? I have the same exhaust and it’s very close to touching
Thanks! Per FMF's recommendation, I loosened the clamp on the engine side of the hose and slightly rotated it away from the motor. This gives you a larger gap between the head pipe and the hose. I've heard of some people also trimming the hose slightly to stretch it tighter and pull it away from the pipe, but I didn't do that myself.
I assume by star you mean sprockets? If so, they were the original ones from Yamaha at this time. The front is 14 and the rear is 38 if memory serves me right. Most, including myself, change the front to a 15 tooth sprocket for better gearing with the smaller 18" MX tires. Hopefully that answered your question, let me know either way!
Are you sure you got the correct part? The cases haven't changed since 2009 so if it doesn't fit correctly, it more than likely is for a different quad.
Hey Austin, I know you've gotten a lot of questions about it, but just want to verify the clutch swap. You really only swapped the basket and washer, but kept everything else from the 2020? Everything else I've seen in researching says you have to change everything including the clutch boss, pressure plate, and clutch fibers/steels. If I really only need to swap the two parts that would be a huge $$ savings. Thanks man and the quad looks great!
Nah don't sweat it! Yes, that's the only two parts you've got to swap. I've run mine that way for nearly 30 hours now with no issue. Anecdote aside, though, Yamaha made the switch to the current clutch basket in 2011. At that time, the internals you mentioned didn't change from 2010-2011. When the slipper was introduced in 2014, the basket and washer were carried over from the previous model years. So they're all completely interchangeable.
@@AustinRohr You sir are a lifesaver. I was pricing out all the parts to do the swap on my "new to me" 2017 and couldn't wrap my head around how much it would cost. Less than $300 is much better. Thanks a lot!
@@AustinRohr Yea, I've seen their kit and questioned why it was only those couple parts. They just ran out of stock though, so I was doing more research to figure it out.
Hey man If I take off the cover for my air box would that be okay if I’m not going like mudding and stuff like that? Would it give me more power as well?
In combination with other modifications, yes! Water and mud are your biggest enemy, but even the stock airbox lid isn't designed to be fully submerged. However, if you remove the lid on a completely stock machine, you won't receive any benefit. You'll also lean it out more and cause it to run hotter. Since the stock YFZ already runs very lean from the factory, you risk wear and tear on the engine. You would need a fuel programmer or ECU and an aftermarket exhaust to justify taking the lid off.
Not a problem! All you need to do is purchase the basket and washer and you're all set. Basket (PRIMARY DRIVEN GEAR COMP.) 18P-16150-00-00 Washer (PLATE, THRUST 1) 5XD-16154-00-00
I meant to ask you about the motor sound when you was taking off in the video. The 2015 I have has the same sound as yours that tick kinda sound when you are going slow. I was wondering if that’s normal for the 450 or do the valves need adjusting. I don’t know if u notice or not but it just does it taking off and going slow really but I heard the same sound from yours on the video. Mine was just rebuilt is why I was wondering if that’s normal and ok.
Austin Rohr yes they are pretty loud. I’m just glad I noticed yours doing that too. I was about to pay 350 to my Yamaha shop to ageist the valves. I need to learn how to do that my self. They told me you have to take the cam out I think. thanks for the reply man.
@@jacobhenson3952 Not a problem! The valves are pretty easy to adjust, you just need a few special tools and a service manual to get started, and there are some really great videos out there that can show you the basics of it.
@@jacobhenson3952 The process should be the same for just about any other modern four stroke. The video below will walk you through the basic process, and they use a five-valve WR head that's very similar in design to the head in the YFZ. ua-cam.com/video/1lrH1U4FnRY/v-deo.html All of the details specific to the 2014+ YFZ will be in the manual.
Yes, the YFZ450R is fuel injected. The Vortex is - in my opinion - better than the Power Commander for the simple fact that the Vortex completely replaces the stock ECU. Without diving too deep into it, here's my reasoning... A power commander or any other tuner is only modifying certain elements of the ECU. That means that the Vortex is the only option for curing some of the issues (bog, emissions, etc.) with the stock ECU.
@@AustinRohr alright thanks man! That helped me a lot. I’m thinking of buying a Yfz450r and just needed some info. One more question, does the vortex make the bike run less lean than from factory? And makes the bike run good with aftermarket exhausts, air box lid off, etc?
@@deec3158 Thank you! Always glad to help out! Technically, the answer to your question is no. The range of adjustment on the Vortex means that you can run the quad extremely lean or extremely rich, and tuning it correctly falls on the user. But once you have it set up, it won't run as lean and it will bypass the emissions settings and sensors which makes it run much better. For the modifications you listed, you will need some sort of tuning. The Vortex works perfectly for that and any other modifications you can think of. From my personal experience, the best thing you can do is buy one through companies like BNR or PEP, and have the quad fine-tuned by a shop that can put it on a dyno. I believe that the aforementioned companies will make sure that the map settings on the Vortex are specifically dialed into your needs, and the dyno tuning is the best way to make sure your dials are all set optimally. For what it's worth, I bought mine elsewhere with the stock Vortex maps and then made adjustments based on recommendations I received from fellow racers. It has worked perfectly well for me so far, minus a slight richness on the bottom end. This offseason I'll be adding more to the build and having it professionally tuned. While I stick to my recommendation above, I felt it was worth mentioning that you can get by without going through all of those steps.
@@AustinRohr do the Yamaha dealerships fine tune quads? I don’t think we have any dyno shops down here where I live. Wondering if I can just take it to the dealer and let them fine tune the quad. New to the Rs and all of the tuning stuff lol. So sorry if I asked stupid or simple questions.
Hey man I just got the same bike and was wondering about the clutch basket problems and if there are any other problems with this bike out of the box, I just got my vortex and it should be in in a few days but that’s all I’ve got so far, I’d almost need a shopping list of must have items, right now I’m planning on the 09 oem clutch basket like you said I got the vortex coming in and I wanna get a full exhaust and vented air box, any other suggestions? I’m scared to damage my new quad as I’m learning there are a lot more issues than I would expect from an out the box bike. You seem to have a nice build thanks man
Ps this is the first new machine I have and don’t really kno much about aftermarket parts any knowledge you could drop on me would be suppppper helpful especially vortex settings once I get it also don’t kno much about programmers, trying to learn!
The emissions/ECU and the clutch are really the biggest things you've gotta bite the bullet on up front. Other than that, the subframe isn't the strongest so many people buy braces (Walsh, BVC, Force Parts) or an entire aftermarket subframe (Walsh/Lonestar). It's not as necessary, though. Depends on your weight and what type of riding you do, as well as your riding style. Also, for the Vortex, I recommend map 9 with settings 5-6-5. That's what I run with these mods and it works pretty good.
I'll have to look for one. I bought it through Motosport, and I believe Wienen Motorsports sells them as well. That said, I also have heard FMF was behind and they've been on backorder.
i have a 19 yfz450r stock besides rock nerf bars tether and odi rogue lock on grips. the stock bog is sort of annoying im gonna get a uni air filter hopefully that helps it run a bit cleaner
My understanding is that the bog is directly related to either the AIS system and/or the stock ECU. I hadn't ridden the quad prior to deleting the AIS and installing the Vortex, so I can't speak from personal experience what helps the most, but I would start there. I'd definitely start with the AIS delete though, as it's inexpensive and a great mod to do even if it doesn't necessarily cure the bog. A high quality air filter is definitely a good move to make, but it won't make any difference in fixing your bog issue. If the Vortex is too large of an investment and you aren't planning on throwing a full exhaust, intake, and other mods at it, I believe you can also have your stock ECU tuned by Alba Racing to reduce bog.
Austin Rohr you just taught me a lot. Thank you. Is the AIS a difficult as it sounds? Or is it just me? And i will end up doin the abla racing ecu tune
Are you referring to the oil filler cap or the timing/inspection plugs? All of my aftermarket plugs and caps came from Works Connection. I'd recommend buying direct over using eBay.
It's just a little plug identical to the original clutch sensor but with a single wire that creates a loop between the two connections in the plug. I've got the part from BNR listed in the pinned comment if you're curious what it looks like.
@@LuisGarcia-ym4bd no, the headlights only work with the stock blob that has a switch for them. You'd have to come up with some kind of custom switch for that.
I’m trying to figure out the best possible map setup for my 2013 Yfz450r. I recently put a gytr pipe on it, a k&n intake, and the power commander 5 but I still can’t seem to push out what I’m looking to get out of it. I’m trying to push the max speed of it and the pipe somehow made me slower
I ordered them through a variety of places. I typically order directly through the manufacturer, but I picked up some of them through Rocky Mountain ATV/MC, Motosport, and KB Motorsports.
Awesome man! You can really tell you put a lot of thought into each aspect of what you did. Detail oriented for sure. Check out my first video. Just got a 2017 YFZ. Would love to hear some of your recommendations on what I should do to it first. Thanks!
Thank you! It would depend on what type of riding you want to do, but I would start with the AIS delete, Vortex, and clutch basket. That will "bulletproof" the quad and make it better all around. Modifications like a stabilizer, nerfs, exhaust, etc., will really depend on what your budget and needs are.
@@AustinRohr awesome man, I’ll research each of those further. I’m pretty fresh with the mechanical modification aspect of building out a machine even though I grew up riding a lot. So excited to learn and try on my own. I’m looking to do primarily track riding based on where I live in northern NJ outside of Manhattan. I’ll hopefully do occasional trails that the YFZ can handle. I’m going to document, and we should keep in touch! Thanks again!
GYTR (Yamaha) sells the AIS delete kit directly. You can buy them through Yamaha dealers and places like Rocky Mountain ATV/MC. You can buy aftermarket kits too, but I stuck with the one Yamaha sells. After that, your oil can get hot and escape through the breather hoses, which can cause you to run low on oil while riding. To prevent that, you should pick up an oil breather box. I purchased mine through 38 Motorsports, but tons of places sell them. Peak Racing, Duncan, Walsh, and others all sell them, and you can also adapt an LTR oil breather box. It's all really up to your preference at that point.
In this video I believe I was on Map 9 with 5-6-5 for my settings. After doing some more extensive modifications and having it professionally dynoed, we're on Map 8 with 7-7-2.
@@Elimua009 since the YFZ450R is already 49 inches wide there's not too much more to gain from making it wider. But using spacers or a 3:2 offset wheel will put the rotating mass of the wheel and tire further away from the spindle, which causes premature wear on your front end and makes the steering twitchier.

I've really enjoyed making the transition. The LT-R was such a comfortable and fun quad to ride, and I agree the stock suspension could be made to work really well.
I have a new Raptor and I just got a 2015 YFZ 450R and I love it. I’m liking this 450 content you are putting out I just sub to you.
I've never tried out a Raptor before, but the YFZ is an awesome machine! Thanks for subscribing!

Nice quad man! Looks like u got your suspension dialed in perfect on those jumps
Thank you
I also loved how clean and shiny your bike was.

Nice bike fun video. I gave it a like just because I like to check out other peoples machines.
What do you recommend changing when I get mine? I heard they’re blowing up due to bad oil distribution? 🤔

Hey man, nice build and backyard turn track. I was wondering how much land it took to build. Something I'm really interested in.

That’s beautiful Yamaha yfz 450r 🔥🥶does that exhaust make your yfz faster I was thinking about getting the same one for my yfz
Any exhaust will open it up over stock! Just make sure to open the airbox and tune the efi to accommodate for an exhaust change.
Nice build!

I don't ride with the airbox lid at all.
I did save it and plugged the intake hole in it so I can seal the airbox while pressure washing, though.

The 2020 clutch basket lasts 5 hours?? Wtf how would yamaha not fix this
Hello bro, tell me which star is in front and behind on the chain. Maybe you said in your video, but I don't understand from the words))
Nice video man!! Where did you get that fmf exhaust I have a 2020 and can’t find the fmf?
I ordered mine through Motosport.
Just got a 2021 yfz450r. The case saver you have does not fit on mine. Any recommendations on what I should go with
Are you sure you got the correct part? The cases haven't changed since 2009 so if it doesn't fit correctly, it more than likely is for a different quad.
Great video
@@bakilleen11 no problem! And all of the clutch parts are listed in the pinned comment, including a link to BNR who sells them as a kit.
@@AustinRohr Yea, I've seen their kit and questioned why it was only those couple parts. They just ran out of stock though, so I was doing more research to figure it out.
Last question man, did your Vortex come with the Duncan Racing maps? KB Motorsports doesn't specify. Thanks
Austin Rohr okay good to know thank you 🙏
Where did you the flag sticker? :D

Should be completely normal, they're pretty loud motors. I wouldn't worry about it too much unless it's REALLY loud.
Austin Rohr I have the tools to do it but I could not find a video on the 2014 and up on how to do it really.

Is this quad fuel injected? Also, is the vortex ecu better than a power commander?
@@AustinRohr subbed btw. sick build man!
Oh! And I wanna do the ais delete kit, sorry for the huge comment just 10k plus 2k to build wanna do it right you kno
Do you have a link for the FMF set up you’re using.
And i will end up doin the abla racing ecu tune

where do you get the emissions delete kit.

@@Elimua009 since the YFZ450R is already 49 inches wide there's not too much more to gain from making it wider.
