    I would refer to it as trimming above the damage. If you think about it, a lot of people use the term "trim up" and a word associated with up is above.

    I went through similar experiences here, being a first time beardsman , I didn't know what to do. So, I researched UA-cam and found this channel. I am sooo glad! I was using my wife's hair shampoo on my beginner beard, I found some Beard Guyz beard oil at Walmart, (after seeing Dan's review of that product, I immediately stopped! I bought some Honest Amish beard oil and my beard is progressing nicely!)

      So the damage from blowdryers only comes in when people are not doing it correctly. I use heat every single day. No worries at all when done correctly and can even be healthier. Check this video out: ua-cam.com/video/RmW1Ut5OPI0/v-deo.html

      @@DanCBearded , I got to searching today and found a knot on a strand of hair. Not sure if it became that way due to sleeping or if it is damage. I trimmed just above the damage as you advised. On a side note, you got a carrier oil video in the works for Abyssinian oil? The sample pack from Weatherbeard had Abyssinian oil listed as the top ingredient. My beard and skin responded so well to that oil versus others. Just was wondering and if you happen to know of other companies that use that oil. Thanks in advance.

      @Daniel The Bearded That's actually a myth. However, the shape of a hair is a thick base that goes out to a pointy tip. If you trim your beard down but don't shave completely, the new tip of your hairs will be that thicker base giving your beard a slightly fuller appearance.

    Yup! That’s me…nodding and looking at my phone! I wasn’t even really aware of any extra beard care besides oil, and even with oil, I didn’t know it had any benefits beyond making it smell good. I thought maybe it was good for the hair but never actually looked into it, until one day I decided to look up cologne scented beard oils and reviews on UA-cam and came across this dude with a Fable shirt on, and an epic beard. Before that day a beard was just something that happened if you didn’t shave, and all of the different beards out there was based only on your genetics, and you either got it, or you don’t. After that day I decided to watch more videos created by this gentleman that pushes positivity, and is excited about sharing what he knows and learns with the rest of the world. It reminded me of when I was in school I did better in history than most of my other classes, and when I think back on how the teachers delivered the information, they where excited, interested, and fascinated by this history, and it was contagious! I became excited, interested, and fascinated about history and looked forward to listening to those teachers and going to their classes. As I kept watching Dan C’s videos, I learned HE WAS A HISTORY TEACHER ALSO!!! How cool! I started to make all the adjustments necessary to grow my healthiest, best possible beard I could grow, and up to the point of learning this information I could only grow my beard to 4-5 inches before having to cut the dry, brittle, spit ends off and make it look more consistent with the rest of the hair since it would look thin and wispy due to inconsistent growth, breakage, and other poor grooming habits that came from washing my beard daily with dial bar soap, head hair shampoo and conditioner. In that order and pretty much all 3 products almost every day! I had no idea I was creating the damage just because I wanted a clean, awesome smelling beard! I was about at 5 inches at the time, and I knew some of the damage wasn’t going to be able to be repaired, but I didn’t want to take it all the way back to the skin either, so the compromise was taking of an inch to an inch and a half, leaving me with about 3 and a half inches to work with, and officially start my beard journey. From this point I just looked for and trimmed out any other damaged hairs I found with a pair of scissors one hair at a time. I have been documenting this journey at the beginning of every month by taking pictures in the same outfit, with the same background, at different angles, and using the same ruler to show the actual growth from my bottom lip to the bottom of my beard. My beard is fuller, healthier, and looks amazing when I use heat! I am at 6 months and promised myself I wouldn’t trim for at least 6 months and the feeling is that it really doesn’t need a trim, but it will give the bottom a nice shape because transparency is not an issue yet in this journey, and I am close to 6 inches for the first time in my life and it is feeling and looking healthier and better than it ever has!!! THANK YOU DAN C!!! Truly, the trusted teacher! 😀

I wish i could of kept it but it was probably better to start over. Main thing is i wish i would of known what i knew now but was too embarrassed i suppose? The one positive thing is when i had a crazy fairly long beard i somehow lived in a area where it seemed people got a kick out of it, so at least decent memories. Different thoughts and memories made now, probably still haven't hit the crazy length i did during lock down but now its actual compliments instead of comedy compliments for doing a great impersonation of someone longing for their long lost beach ball Wilson.

    I would say above the damage, because you are going upward. If I am understanding properly, if I have a hair that zig zags back and forth upward like a crinkle cut fry, that is heat damage correct? I have heard you mention crinkle cut fry, then I found one the other day and thought oooh, this is what you meant. I stopped using a blow dryer after the shower and in the morning for styling, and now I only use it once a day if I do at all.

    • @DanCBearded
      @DanCBearded  Рік тому +2

      The crinkle can be heat damage, but normally it’s not. That can also just be natural. If it’s real heat damage, some spots are going to be really thin or visually damaged.

      Something you said in a previous video stuck with me. You have to experiment and find what works best for you as an individual. And, as you know, that depends on a multitude of factors. But I'm slowly discovering the routine that works best for me, the oils that works best for me, the butters that works best for me, the way I comb my beard that works best for me. All these things start to come together as your beard gets longer.
      You are making this journey very enjoyable! Thank you.

    I’m currently in Florida working hurricane relief. I’m dealing with some issues with my beard while here. I don’t have any butter with me, and only a few oils, I did bring my solid wash bar but thats all I was comfortable bringing because I don’t know were I’m sleeping from day to day so just going on the fly. I noticed I had a ton of shedding the last couple of times I rinsed and used oil.. way more than normal. Plus I’m not able to drink my gallon of water that I normally would. I know the stress from being away from the family and the work here isn’t good for my beard. I had a big shade hat, so the upper half (5 inch)of my beard was protected but the bottom half(5 inch) was not and became like a bleach blonde yellow. So, I started my first beard journey during the pandemic. At the time, I lived in Arizona, and worked in the food service industry, as a shift manager. Therefore: super dry, arid environment, when we were all required to wear masks, as an "essential worker" averaging 50+ hours a week. To say that I was not in the best environment to start growing a beard, is a _massive_ understatement.
    Fast forward a 1 1/2 years: I now live in Mississippi, I drive a semi as my profession, and have learned *SO* much from Dan C. (I subscribed before I started my first beard) that after doing the same assessment that he suggests in the above video, I shaved. I did not go down to the skin, but went down to a #3 on my shaver. I realized I had serious dandruff under the entirety of my beard, and a large portion of my beard had split ends.
    I began a serious regimen of washing my face twice a day, and applying a healthy dose of beard oil. My beard started growing back much fuller, and quite a bit more manageable.
    Thank you, Dan C. Bearded! You truly are the Trusted Teacher!

    Not necessarily on topic, but does anyone else have issues with individual hairs getting irritated in their mustache once it gets longer? I'm not talking about ingrown hairs or irritated skin. It feels like bedhead but on my upper lip and only the odd hair here and there. When I brush my fingers against it or kiss my wife, it lights up for a second and kinda hurts. The only thing that relieves it is plucking the hair, but I hate doing that because I don't want to lose thickness and one time, the plucking actually caused a radiating effect that made the surrounding hairs have the same problem. Any thoughts?

    My beard is quite thin and sparse. But I do have some bulk in the under carriage parts and ok growth on my cheeks, but I wanted to dye my beard darker because it was so blonde and it made me anxious and insecure. I didn't like the result. The dye was permanent, and I started looking for ways to get rid of the color. And I think all of those attempts led my beard to be in worse shape than before dyeing. I still haven't gotten my natural color back (it's been almost 4 weeks now) and I think it looks thinner. I have a real problem finding split ends. The beard is closing in on 4 inches so it shouldn't be hard to find split ends but I can't seem to find them. And since I try not to use any excess products right now for my beard to heal I kind of have a lot of hairs sticking out in various places, but it's so hard to know if they are damaged, or if it's just natural for them to stick out this way. I have almost decided to shave or trim, but have decided not to because I want to keep growing. But I'm afraid I might waste my time and that it won't grow more because I've damaged it. That's why I want to start over sometimes. But I'm also a slow grower and am really impatient, so I don't want to start over again. It took me almost 6 months to get to almost 4 inches, so I don't really know what to do. Sorry for the incoherent rambling. I just wanted to alleviate my anxiety I guess....

That was nearly a decade ago & I still feel like I could start over! Then I learned to leave it alone. Then I learned that "less is more" when it comes to most products in that more will clog pores faster than can ever aide in beard growth. Then I learned about blow drying on low heat with a diffuser. Then I learned about heated brushes & how to find the correct temperature for your specific type of facial hair. I honestly expect to learn more every day whether be intentionally or not, I've went from it being a "beard journey" to a lifestyle & the more information I soak in, the more great things my beard will also soak in. @@TaupeStarGaming Simple answer is NO! If your plan is to grow it out, or whether you're happy where it is, honestly, I would suggest getting a good oil for your beard to start with. I tend to use the Kroger brand organic coconut oil as it has worked wonders for me. It has no scent, but as far as I'm concerned, a decent cologne makes up for unscented oil. A heated brush is a must though in my opinion. Start on lowest setting & go from there. You may need a higher temperature, you may need less time with the brush in your face sweater. If you find that the heated brush works well for your style, I would also suggest a good beard butter. Run a bit of butter through your beard after the heated brush just to help nourish the facial hair. That being said, with all that I've had to say, your results may very! Play with it, see what works, & go from there. Dan C can probably explain it better, but that's my 2 cents brother! And never forget my friend. We're all in this thing together!
