- Mercedes has often made the process of winning seven world championships in a row look straightforward from the outside. But the truth is never quite that simple, and it certainly wasn't ahead of the debut of the V6 turbohybrid engines for 2014. While Mercedes hit the ground running that year and has been dominant ever since, stories from behind the scenes in the lead-up to 2014 show how much trouble it was in at various times before that year's W05 hit the track. And once the team was winning, it potentially unleashed its greatest trick, which rivals have only recently cottoned on to.

I'd love a video about the ferrari engine situation. How they ended up being so competitive and how they fell from glory so hard this season

The fuel flow meter worked in an on-off-on-off fashion at a certain frequency (a few tens on hertz)
Ferrari worked the frequency out and timed the fuel pump to push in more fuel every time the sensor was in the off state.
They got caught and the new flow fuel meter is random so this trick no longer works

their biggest strength is clearly their organisation/toto. the Ferrai's of 2017/18 where really good designs and the fact that mercedes adopted some of it into the 2019/20 car says a lot, the way they have managed the drivers and whole team during the season combined with a lot of mind games won them dose tow years.
Absolutely. I've just got carried away and written a short essay on that exact thing. Toto is a fricking genius as a manager - yet he always plays down his own role. Nope, Toto, you're the best manager I've *ever* seen in the near 50 years I've watching F1.
Yep people in F1 have awful memeories, 2017/18 Ferrari could have won the championship in at least 1 of those years given how close it was between Hamilton vs Vettel....Even 2019 they blitzed Merc 2nd half of the year (with an illegal engine) but the fact Merc went back & added more innovations speaks volume to how good the wider team is as they felt threatned....not their fault Ferrari got caught & they ended up dominating by a mile this season....they put in the work & deserve it all

This is what I like about the engineering culture inside the Brackley factory. They insist on long-term success instead of short-term gains, they already prepared for the next challenge several years ahead while the rivals still trying to put effort for one season only....
Which scares me, because I am absolutely convinced that they are already fully engaged in developing 2022 car, and comes this "promised revolution"... they will still be miles ahead of everybody else 😭

Ferrari might have a bigger budget, but they lack quality on the management side of things and it shows. Plus the fact that the rule changes haven't affected Mercedes at all unlike Ferrari, Renault, Brawn GP (banning the double diffuser would've affected them if they didn't sell the team. It did affect Mercedes but they weren't planning to be successful from the get go anyway) and so on
every other f1 team especially red bull: the 2014 mercedes chasis was good

Very interesting. I was wondering how the changeover from Brawn had gone on behind the scenes. Despite the problems they had up to 2014, there was always that sense that when they made their breakthrough, the car would be championship material. What we didn't know was how important Toto would be to the team's success.
One of the things I've admired most about the team is, actually, the management. Don't get me wrong, of course I admire the drivers and their amazing skills. That goes without saying. I also admire without reservation everyone who's been a part of actually building the car and power train, from the designers to the apprentice spanners (mechanics, for those who don't know the term), even all the auxiliary staff whose jobs make the car builders' jobs possible.
However, from what I've picked up over the last decade, specifically in this era of hybrid cars, the management style is such that every team member - and by that I mean everyone who works there - is given the opportunity to do their job without interference, are allowed to have ideas (and that is such a rare thing in business! I know to the cost of my frazzled nerves...), and the introduction of a no-blame culture. Second to that no-blame culture - which any business worth its salt should adopt immediately if not sooner - is their "what could we have done better?" debriefings after every race. With so many front of grid lockouts and 1-2 finishes, it would be so easy to kick back and enjoy the moment. I've seen teams go down that route. "We did it this way and succeeded, let's not change a thing!" It's an understandable and enticing process, but sitting on one's laurels is likely to end up with you getting a sore bum.
Toto has always framed his words in a positive way. Not "right, what went wrong?" but "what can we improve on?" That mindset is a) easier on the nerves of everyone involved and b) the emphasis on the "we" means the team feel like the management are looking at themselves too. That is beyond valuable for the best atmosphere in any workplace and is far more likely to help find even the smallest improvements if no one's going to blame you for not being perfect to begin with. He's well aware that no one is perfect, but he does expect them all to pitch in and do the very best they can, regardless of their tasks (that request for the one site to work an extra 10 hours a week, and getting the agreement is a good example).
If something goes wrong, he doesn't send out anyone else but always speaks to the press and the buck stops with him. I may have missed it somewhere, but _I've_ never heard him say anything bad about his team, drivers included. He may say, if pushed, that a person (driver or otherwise) didn't have the best race, or words to that effect, but that's as far as I've heard him go. I would have killed for a boss like that when I was working!
Don't underestimate how important he is and has been in regards to turning this team into the dominant one it is today. He's permanently under the impression that another team could come and start taking away their future success, so first thing on Monday, they have that "what's to improve?" meeting. I absolutely believe him when he talks about motorsports, whether it's in general, about another F1 team or his own. You cannot fake his passion for the sport, it's just not possible.

awesome video, now waiting for the comments of "its just the car, not the driver" even as in the video they show where Merc offset everyone else by having drivers so good they could hide the cars cornering performance and the quality of the chassis. It is in fact a drivers car and the drivers input made it what it is.

@Glenn Watson Max wouldn't be splitting the Mercs if he had a competent teammate that was allowed to race him on a weekly basis. Ricciardo starts giving him work & then RB decides to support Max only. let's see how well he does vs. an Alonso, Button or Rosberg
@Glenn Watson the difference w/ the example your making is Lewis has already been through at least 3 teammates who were allowed to race him, Max hasn't
yes Max is aggressive, also hot headed, prone to outbursts (e.g. Stroll incident) & sometimes undisciplined. me personally Lewis just does a lot of mind games his tires are about to go & then proceeds to put in multiple fastest laps. I've yet to see any champion not be a little rattled if the game plan doesn't go accordingly.
I just can't give Max too much credit when he has no competition from a teammate at all, bc the game plan would be altered if he not only had to worry about the rest of the grid, but also had to worry about his teammate as well. like they always say its a lot harder to fight a war on multiple fronts
@Glenn Watson Important points to remember when talking about the car performance & Lewis, Nico & Jenson: the '14 Mercedes was the first one with Hamilton's input in the development, and if you recall there were several occasions over the years where Rosberg had to copy Lewis' setup, as well as have the team show him in the telemetry & live during races exactly where and how Lewis was beating him (and swap his mechanics with Lewis')... to the point the FIA actually had to revise rules on driver coaching. Jenson Button also had to copy Lewis' setup on many occasions over there time as teammates, completely unable to dial in the balance on his own. Toto Wolff & the Mercedes team gave credit to Lewis as being the driving force behind unlocking their car's performance last year after being confused in testing. He said Lewis led them down a development path that initially the team "weren't comfortable" with, but in the end they trusted his judgement, did what he suggested & when it checked out on the data they went back to the drawing board with Lewis' suggestions. the rest is history. It was an interview with Martin Brundle (Lewis & Toto). It's up on both the Mercedes & SkyF1 channels. F1 cars don't develop in a vacuum. There's a reason Red Bull developed the EBD (Vettel wanted more stability in the slower turns... Webber actually hated it).There's a reason nobody but Max Verstappen seems to be capable of consistently getting the best out of that Red Bull. It's not coincidence that Daniel Ricciardo decided to jump ship from RBR not long after Horner announced that they were eager to "build the team around Max". It's a well known fact that one of the biggest weapons in Schumacher's arsenal was getting the engineers to give him exactly what he wanted in a car. Lewis is known for being equally meticulous. After seeing Lewis' telemetry, Jenson Button's father said Jenson told his him that if Lewis ever figured out how to work with the engineers & get the best out of them, the rest of them may well as go home. Looks like he wasn't far off. It's never just the car, but the car is most important. But in development of that car, over a season especially & not just the gestation/creation phase, the driver input is critical.
@Glenn Watson Lewis prefers a car that oversteers too. Apparently Lewis felt that last year's car was too limited by understeer in the slow turns & he wanted to counter that with more initial rotation on the rear. In order to achieve this Mercedes reworked the rear suspension to free up the airflow from the rear wheel to the diffuser so they'd improve the downforce & shift the aero balance rearward, so tires could live with Lewis wanting to rotate the car with the rear end & not slide, overheating these fragile Pirellis. Lewis can cope with oversteer just fine but the tires can't. Some people will imply that some of these drivers could just switch seats & just be faster automatically, but it's never that simple. They have different driving styles (according to Mercedes, Bottas & Lewis are very similar in what they both want, but Lewis seems to be better at managing oversteer... he manages his rear tire wear better & makes less oversteer- induced mistakes). If it were true, Gasly would still be in a Red Bull & Albon wouldn't currently have questions surrounding his seat.
It"s incredible to know, that they started their engine dev, a full year earlier than any other team!

For real, we need a negative feedback loop as well as a whole host of things to end their dominance. If they are still dominant in 2022 it could hurt the sport.

According to Niki Lauda, whom told Luca di Montezemolo, Mercedes AMG started work on this turbo hybrid engine in 2007....7 years head start. Mercedes were adamant on this turbo hybrid engine in 2012(V-4 ICE) but Ferrari said no so all went to V-6 platform.
Throw in the token system and engine freezes and you have the recipe for Mercedes dominance.

But no British car manufacturer with hybrid tech. Most of the cars available with hybridization in the UK are from other countries.
Germans car manufacturers are into hybridization.
Japan is into hybridization.
Korea is into hybridization.

@@AlphaLeonidas - the chassis is just the monocoque area that includes the front suspension that attaches to the engine with the rear suspension and gearbox.

Mercedes did invest heavily in Kers, though. They were one of the only cars (mclaren) to effectively run the system. Others such as redbull thought the increase weight (batteries/cooling) wasn't worth the small increase in HP. Renault wanted an I4, ferrari did not. In the end they settled on a v6. The I4 which eventually became the v4 porsche ran in their 919 hybrid le mans prototype - they (VW) were one of many manufacturers shaping the new hybrid formula.
So saying mercedes had a head start is an extreme dilation of the truth. That's like saying redbull had an aero advantage because they have a windtunnel. Every team has a windtunnel and every team was given the regs at exactly the same time. Mercedes simply invested heavily into the project, unlike ferrari and renault.
The token system was once again another unintended consequence of capping team spend. Unfortunately, it locked in mercedes engine advantage for longer than necessary. Furthermore, the engines were not frozen, teams could change the performance parameters over the winter in a system no different from the aero cap incoming next year and the following years. Plus reliability fixes could be conducted token free. The system was meant to stop a spend wars amongst manufacturers.
Anyone saying mercedes had a heart start are the same fools who believed they were only winning because of their PU. It was clear since at least 2013, mercedes knew how to build a chassis. Admittedly, while blistering over a flying lap, the w04 ate it's tires during the race. Tire wear, specifically rear tire overheating has always been the nadir of every mercedes until the w10. I could be argued the w09 post their innovative rear hub blown axle and perforated rear wheel rim.

It seems unbelievable that Mercedes was the only Team that worked like a proper company would work in the free economic market back than.
Implementing a proper project management back in 2011 for 2014, developing best practice and business cases for the engine development and the leadership to make a team of thousands of employees work together for one common goal is astonishing. This should be a best practice example for companies too.
This shows why strategic planning is so important. You gain a performance gap to your competitors and if you keep on working, you gain for years to come.
As well as I hate to see Mercedes dominating F1 since seven years now, as well do I admire how well Mercedes did prepare for the Hybrid era and how well everything was planned, done and implemented.

@Barcelona golden state The regulation change was for all teams not only for Merc. Merc managed to adapt to these new regulations much better than the rest. No other team could match them in this regard. Their dominance in F1 today is a testamount to their ability and not luck.
Winning the championship using Honda's money in 2009, with all the personnel and resources Brawn had in place was not 'zero'

@Barcelona golden state No, you salty and it shows. Didn't you hear even how the cylinders design were changed by the regulation and the team had to come up with a new design within a year. Also did you watch the video because I am pretty sure it highlighted how it was just not the engine but the chassis and aero were also really strong.
@Barcelona golden state many teams have bogey tracks that's not uncommon. And common sense tells you an engine alone just doesn't get you 7 world titles. If that was the case explain williams, racing point/force India.

This is one of my favorite “The Race” Videos.
Mercedes figured out early on that one of the secrets to F1 was mastering the Pirelli tires
They were the first to use thermal imaging cameras on the cars to track the warm up and have deployed a variety of trick suspensions, wheels, and breaks to warm up the tires on demand.
The importance of this is reflected in the fact that worst races Mercedes have had were all on tracks where they couldn't get the tires to work.
This shouldn't come as a surprise since mastering the Bridgestone rubber was a big part of Ferrari's success in the 00's when the team was run by... *drum roll* Ross Brawn
Pirelli have also twice now changed their compounds mid season due to the complaining of the teams (mostly Mercedes) and low and behold the Merc's performance took an upswing after those changes. Coincidence? I think not.

Paddy lowe didn't join till the middle of the 2013 season. He probably had very little to do with the 2014 car
Somebody just read "Total Competition" and made a video about it...!! interesting stuff, but if anyone wants to really understand how Brawn did this, the pressure he was under, and how much he got shafted by Mercedes when it all came to a head, I can highly recommend that book, it's a great insight.

I don't know where to find the staff that each team has. But, judging by Hamilton's post race interviews, Mercedes F1 is around 1800 or 1900 employees now. So to me, the secret (or not so secret) to their success would be that they have a huge number of employees.

Honestly, this could have been your best upload yet but why rush the narration so much? Some really amazing insights/stories shared here that just had no time to be developed or appreciated before moving straight into another at lightning speed. Irony here is that you needed the Ferrari power unit to power this vid, not the Mercedes one
There is no secret just alot if hard work striving for an unachievable perfection, working hard and working smart is key, as Ferrari has proved that even with all the resources and money in the world you can't just buy a championship, you have to have both to compete in the modern world!!

Don’t understand why the media constantly talks about Merc leaving the sport or Lewis leaving.
These guys have one so much to get so good, why would they stop???
