    The matches between Hingis and Venus and Capriati and Serena and Davenport were all fantastic.

      Yes, yes, and more yes! So many nail biters, and no-one was leaving anything on the court. Even watching these highlights are so much more exciting than many of today's offerings. A time when baselines still legitimately incorporated all-court games.

    Man oh man... Venus used to be scary good.
    Almost too fast for her own good. That falling down during a point and able to get up like it was nothing. Given her longevity in the game, you have to put her down as one of the most explosive athletes ever to play tennis

    • @justincartwright252

      Big facts. Given her height and her wingspan, if she could have stayed fully energized throughout her whole career - BOY. Venus in full flight is equally scary as Serena in full flight. I've always thought that.

      For several years Venus' silhouette was used as the WTA symbol in their logo. It was a shot of her in full stride to retrieve a cross court shot.

      @hirokiburke 5 років тому +1

      Absolutely. Venus Williams at her best around the early 2000s was almost unbeatable. Even when Serena had her breakthrough years in 2003-2004 and beat Venus in the 5 Slam finals they'd played, I still thought Venus was eventually going to be the more successful out of the two. If she'd had more luck with avoiding injuries and illness, she might have.

    Excellent match between these titans!! Completely different styles... This was during Venus' insane winning streak. Considering that everything Hingis threw at her during this match wasn't enough, you can see why she was so unbeatable for the rest of the tour too.

    That shot at 20:42 to lead 6:5 in the final set is ABSOLUTELY WOW, I don’t think anyone, even in women’s tennis today could not only run that down but also create an angle winner, prime example of going defense to offense just like that. None of the women in today’s tennis could NEVER do that.

    I just can't stand the low key racism of the US crowd... Venus Williams is an AMERICAN at an AMERICAN tournament and she was the lower ranked player too..... that US crowd should have been with her the whole match.

      Serena began her "second period of domination" after her first round loss at the RG. However the newer players have lagged behind during that period. Today there are some young promising players coming of age, so it is getting better.

    • @gk891
      @gk891 6 років тому +4

      +PV. For sure. But we've seen this from her before. At the 1999 French Open final, she was serving for it at 5-4 in the second set. Steffi played some inspired tennis that game and Hingis' response was to crumble rather than rise to the occassion.
      It seems to me that Hingis was one of those players who could do fine if it all came to her easily. But there were times where she seemed like she would surrender very easily. In this match against Venus, I don't necessarily think that was the case though. Venus played lights out tennis while down 3-5 in the third and so Hingis just became irrelevant afterwards.

      Arrogant? She took out the best player in the world and made it to her 2nd grand slam final. She earned it. Hardly arrogant Please check your definition. In fact, I will post it for you.
      Arrogant...
      adjective
      making claims or pretensions to superior importance or rights; overbearingly assuming; insolently proud: an arrogant public official.
      characterized by or proceeding from arrogance, or a sense of superiority, self-importance, or entitlement: arrogant claims.
      So there is the definition. Since Venus did not say anything to the press or hingis, how did she make any claims? Hmm....
      Venus knew that she came back from Hingis serving for the match... so she is not being assuming.
      So.... yeah... you got nothing

    • @peterzhou9267

      I agree that the celebration was not a humble one but there was a major battle off the court between Hingis and Venus. It was well documented that Hingis and Davenport plotted a "you take out Serena and I strike out Venus so we will clean them out" plan in the US Open. Of course later on both Hingis and Davenport will get on terms with Venus but at the time the underground battle was ugly. (Am not making up stuff... Check the press conferences and interviews during the Open. There is even a book talking about it)
