I served with Toby in my mission! He is super super nice! Very refreshing to see a former missionary I served with on here!

A trust crisis even more than a faith crisis. That’s a really good way to say it.

How petty of the mission to send someone home one day before their mission ends. I hope that person has strong support at home!

Thank you Nemo and Toby. Looking forward to seeing the film you made. (And the first prosecution of the LDS outside of the USA, for breaching local law in the way they treat missionaries)

Oh man his story really resonated with me. One thing that stuck out was how the mission alters the way your view and interact with other people, specifically in regards to "dropping them" when they aren't doing what you want them to do. The mission makes you very callous and fake. That was my experience, anyway. It's very corporate and lacks a "personal touch."

I gotta say “Elder England” is a pretty awesome moniker-kinda like Captain America!

Great episode. I served back in the 80s in southern Mexico. Similar to Toby, I broke some rules, nothing egregious really. The "worst" thing I probably did was swim in the ocean. We did baptisms there in one area and once you get knocked over by a wave walking out to baptize someone, swimming seems minor. I always felt a little guilty about it until I found out the mission president didn't even mind. Some elders were doing it with him there and all he said was "Don't get in over your head."

I learned Spanish on my mission. I love the language and the culture in northern Mexico. Every job I’ve had since then (>20 years) has been because I spoke Spanish. Leaving the church has been extremely conflicting because I would not have learned Spanish or been exposed to the culture without the church.

I use to work sales for a major company. The Utah office always kicked our ass. I suspected it was due to the amount of former missionaries they likely had

It is a huge decision to leave. Leaving the church could disconect you from everone near and dear in your life.

Gruetzi, Brueder! I was in Switzerland Zuerich mission (1973-1975). I was there for my entire mission, but the political situation in Switzerland had already deteriorated. My companion was “aemtlich ausgewesen” to Germany while we were in Chur. My mission is one of the treasures of my life (so far). Despite this, I left the church in the Eighties and continue to balance those two contradictions. I don’t regret either of those actions. Good luck on your journey

With respect to the term "investigator", that term is also very strange to English-speaking non-Mormons. I don't know of any other group that uses the term in this way. I found it very odd when i first heard Mormons using it in this way.

The church says:" Pray and Obey". But take a look at Toby's experience, they live in prision.
