  • Science says kids learn more when we leave them alone. Yes, really. Leave them alone and even give them saws and hammers. Playground:NYC is New York's first adventure playground that is changing the way parents and kids think about free play. Subscribe to Scary Mommy: bit.ly/3bBD9VI
Started by Eve Mosher, Playground:NY is essentially a junk yard where parents are not allowed. Occupational therapists have found that free play helps kids learn to navigate conflict, take risks and in doing so develop social and motor skills. I took my own kids there and couldn't get them to leave. Literally, we had to wait until the place closed. The bonus? Since no grown ups are allowed inside, I got to take a nap on a grassy field across the street. Those occupational therapists are really on to something.

When I was a kid, maybe around 8/10 I can't really remember, my parents would let me play with hammer, handsaw, machete, wood scraps, nails, axe, screwdriver etc. They would only gave me almost blunt tools. For example, a blunt machete/axe/saw that can still cut stuff but if I slip the sharpness would not cut me that much. Still bleeds but nothing serious. They would only mad at me if I injured myself due to my dumbness. That way I learned what I should and shouldn't do with the tools. I also watch my dad build stuff. I love those days. Building stuff, broke it down and build again. Like real life minecraft.

Is this in a private space? Public space? How do they handle liability. Would love one of these where we are but wouldn't know how to navigate this.

I'd read this before: that kids have FEWER accidents in these adventure playgrounds than in conventional playgrounds. Hard to believe, but those are the facts. I know if I'd dropped off my child there I'd have to leave and not watch, because just looking at the apparent chaos would give me a conniption. And yet as a child I would have loved to be let loose with a hammer and some matches to see what I could do!
