Push for "adventure playgrounds" comes with safety concerns

- For decades, special playgrounds in the U.K. have given children free rein. Now, the concept of "adventure play" is slowly spreading in the U.S., but that will require some new thinking about what playgrounds and childhood are supposed to look like. Brook Silva-Braga reports.

When kids play in a normal playground they think they can do anything because they think its safe,but when in an adventure playground,kids Know they can get hurt,and they are more Caution because in their vision,its dangerous,so they are cautious.
Dann Yes exactly! I watched another similar video where they allowed the children to use many different tools. They simply gave them guidelines and rules about the tools. The children were careful and cautious because they knew the expectations they were given.

@@Marieparawho I remember the time that we had a bonfire to get rid of all the waste wood. the only advice that we were given was to wear leather boots and proper denim jeans, along with taking our shirts off to prevent embers from catching them alight.
One of the older guys put an old pair of nylon sneakers and his wrecked synthetic joggers on the fire to show us the dangers of wearing anything synthetic around fire.
To this day, I still warn people of the dangers when we have a barbecue or bonfire. To me it is just common sense, but in today's times of doing everything on computers, common sense it not too common and every year people pay the price.
That was how we played in the 1950's and 60's in the US. They weren't playgrounds, we just found interesting places where there were no adults.
Yes we got bumps and bruises but boy did we learn a lot of common sense and good survival skills. It also helped us to learn to work together and work out our problems.
I was lucky enough to get to do this as a kid in the 2000's. A lot of the other kids who couldn't just ended up sitting inside on computers all day, as dumb as that sounds. Giving kids the capability to make safe choices makes more responsibile teens and adults, as well.
I would've killed to be able to do this as a kid. My mom was an insane helicopter parent when I was little.. I am a late teen now and I would still love to be able to play in one of these.

I stepped on a heroin needle in a normal playground.(I was wearing docs so it was fine) This looks great and mighty educational.
That's a hazard. The idea of these playgrounds is to expose children to controlled risks that they can see and manage on their own. A hazard like a needle is a hazard because it cannot be easily seen until it's too late.
Its sad. I wish I could’ve gone to one of these when I was younger, I could build and use my creativity

With the children's Adventure Playgrounds out of the way, I think the next step is to have a pre-teen to adult Adventure Playground. Where you could do lots of things and have the resources to do so. Unlike real life, where you need money* to buy wood, hammer, nails, and all that stuff just to make something fun.
*Specifics on money because that shizzle-wizzle is what makes the world run most of the time, unfortunately.

I grew up near an adventure playground in hackney, it was lots of fun. No power tools though, lol.
I'm a playworker in the UK, sadly our adventure playgrounds/centres are slowly been closed down.

I couldn’t relate to the desire to get dirty etc while playing outside when I was younger but these are a great concept.
0:41 “no direction on what to do” isn’t that the point of play??? Could you imagine how boring it would be if you were told what to do and how to be while you’re trying to have fun.
My nephews love to come over because I give them real life adventure. I tell them how to work on their bikes (changing inner tubes, putting chain on, etc) and I don't let the watch me, I give them the tools and let them make mistakes and subtly guide them. I also let them use spray paint, do light construction, etc. My son is in college and he stays busy doing odds and ends for friends because they don't know how to work on cars, do construction in the house (like hanging shelves) and so on and so on.
I wish I could EVER play on an adventure playground, but im 14, and with thst im too late. I wish i could have ever been on one, but the fsrtherst away from my home is like 24 kilometers, a lot to walk just for a playground.
I really feel like i wanna be on one of those, but im too old :(
honestly this type of playground is perfect for your age
Anything below 20 is still kiddy and i mean as long as your acrive up to 70 can be playfull

My 3 yr old daughter spends a lot of time playing with my stuff while I'm building things in the shop or on job sites and she doesn't get hurt. Probably the worst thing is that she's using my tools and screws when I need them! She's gotten hurt on regular playgrounds and off of them but it's part of growing up, parents just need to accept that and understand that their kids are developing a whole host of skills and knowledge by doing this stuff.

As much as I agree with kids being able to play with fire to learn how it works and spreads as this can prepare them for emergencies with fire as adults, that’s one thing that maybe needs a bit more control and supervision.
In America everyone would have helmets, goggles, gloves, steel tipped chukka boots. No fires, no sawing, no hammering, no building. All the fun taken out.

I want to go to this when my family goes back to New York so badly, but the parents probably wouldn't like a constantly anxious 13 year old stepping on nails with their kids, espically since I'm really tall which leads people to believe I'm older than 13
There are middle grounds between nails and saws and matches and the sanitized playgrounds we offer in the States. We seriously need more open play possibilities!

What about climbing trees what about sports all of these are genuinely dangerous stuff plus never in my childhood have i ever saw a kid actually play in the playgrounds instead they climb trees they make the things too dangerous they climbed on the top of the playground they took genuinely dangerous risks and that's not healthy plus getting hurt is a normal things people have to experience to learn as a kid only did i learn to be careful near furnaces when I actually got my finger burned only did i know not to spend too much time in the sun when i got a sun burn getting hurt is a part of learning and i hate to see people underestimate that #givechildrenachildhood

But what if a kid accidentally starts a fire and burns the whole Playground
The kids learn something, it's better for the whole playground to be burnt down which would only probably be a little bit of a loss than for their own house to be burnt down. The kid and other kids would learn that fire needs to be respected. If you say "no, don't play with fire" that starts making them think and be curious about fire and it's better for them to play with fire in a safe environment then in their own house.

these parents don't have their own "tools" and the children are not dressed properly for "working"..and a nail in the foot=my point exactly. safety glasses, work boots, and gloves for starters!
true, but the whole point of adventure playgrounds is to expose children to risks and hazards, so they are trained to protect themselves, while safe playgrounds temp kids to who knows, try getting into risks and hazards. i totally agree with you though!
and these playground have a lower injury rate
@@jamesmcnaughton9939 it's true, kids know more than you would think. Kids respond well to being treated as an adult and will take great caution if given adult tools. On "safer playgrounds" kids might get bored and will try to find risky things aren't allowed to do such as climbing the metal poles of swings, and mess around on monkey bars.
Would you wear this on a “safe playground” if not then you shouldn’t wear em on an adventure playground which is actually safer
