Just so you know, in Fires of Pompeii there's a dialogue that the Doctor talks about causing the fire. When Donna asks if he was there before he says "Mmm. Ages ago. Before you ask, that fire had nothing to do with me. Well, a little bit. But I haven't got the chance to look around properly."

@@jessetorres8738 Inferno is incredible, I watched that one for the first time last year (and rewatched it last week. Doing my first full watch through of Classic Doctor Who this year).
I was absolutely SHOCKED to see the caveman from The Firemaker as Greg Sutton the oil man, him and the assistant Petra were so frickin cute together and I shipped them so hard.
It was also really cool to see the callback to that episode in The Mind of Evil as The Doctors "greatest fear".

A combination of all episodes existing in the archive and Frazer and Wendy not being dead no doubt.
There are some stories with Frazer and Anneke but those are mostly missing.
Plus Anneke having turned down the opportunity to appear as part of the previous companions support group back during the Chibnall era the producers likely approached Wendy first anyhow.

I think because it is basically structured as a two-parter in Antarctica then a four-parter in Chase's mansion.

First doctor: the war machines (for me this episode is awesome in context of how little the audience knew about the doctor, and that same idea stands true today with how little we really know the classic doctors; they are much more mysterious than their modern counterparts. Although any mystery surrounding the doctor is vague or short, I still remember it for this reason.)
Second doctor: Enemy of the World (most "classic" doctor who episode, I have watched it in its entirety 4 times)
Third doctor: inferno (although not my personal favorite, objectively the best; the perfect third doctor story)
Fourth doctor: Warrior's gate (I should probably rewatch it, but I remember loving this episode, I believe it was something about knowing just enough but wanting to know more; cool settings and ideas too)
Fifth doctor: enlightenment (personal favorite, although plot heavy due to key to time arc and mawdryn undead; a lot of companion development)
Sixth doctor: Revelation of The Daleks (best tv episode of my favorite doctor)
Seventh doctor: The Happiness Patrol (shows the darker nature of the show, and along with most of sevens run, it unintentionally serves as a bridge between the writing style of classic who and nu who)

The great thing about Classic Who is that there's no such thing as "watching all of it", and quite apart from the fact that it's not built for binge-watching, it's just a hard limit that the number of people who have seen "every episode" are going down every year as they die off. They have to be in their 60s by now, if they saw all the B&W episodes.

The Daemons is one of the best of the Third Doctor's era and one of the casts favourites.

We had one episode a week, no repeats, and back when it was broadcast, there were no home video recorders for people to tape it.

  • @TheGerkuman
    @TheGerkuman 9 місяців тому

While The Doctor's reaction to inspiring the great fire of Rome still is weird, it does make more sense in context due to how much The Doctor understood Time Travel.
In The Aztecs (and I am trying very hard here to keep it spoiler free) The Doctor says that history cannot be changed, but by the end of the episode he realises that their presence can cause some small changes. This is another step down the road; history can't be changed but their presence could influence really important things.
And it's only a few steps down the road then before The Doctor accepts that time is mutable so we can have episodes like Pyramids of Mars and Day of the Daleks, and the revival had to come up with the fixed points in time thing to try to make both 'you can't change history' and 'you can change history' be possible at the same time.

I think The Krotons is better than it tends to get credit for but yeah, I never would have recommended that as one of your first tastes of that era lol. I’m very glad you watched The Romans and The Dæmons!
I haven’t seen much beyond the first three eras of Classic Who myself (slow-going for reasons outside of my control) so I can only really recommend from those three. If you’re planning to do this again, my suggestions:
    Hartnell:
    - An Unearthly Child. That first episode is absolutely amazing and mysterious. The next three can be slow for those who aren’t used to it, especially in juxtaposition to episode one, but you seem to be taking this like a champ so I’d definitely recommend taking a look at how it all started.
    - The Aztecs. There’s a reason it has its reputation as a great story. Very strong stuff for each character and it’s a really interesting early dive into the complications of time travel and what can or can’t be changed and what should or shouldn’t be changed.
    - The Time Meddler. Another top favorite, I don’t know how many times I’ve seen it anymore. Extremely solid story and the first proper foray into what would become the main format of the show, with an alien element involved in the past rather than the pure historicals up until that point. It’s also the first introduction of a Gallifreyan besides the Doctor and Susan.
    - The Gunfighters. This one seems to get mixed reviews but my goodness is it ridiculous fun imo.
    - The War Machines. It’s pure 60s sci-fi and always engaging.
Honorable mention to The Tenth Planet, which is spectacular but I hesitate to recommend the final story of a Doctor you’ve not seen much of. I have to cut myself off there because I could keep going on with personal favorites that don’t necessarily work as introductions, and if I let myself get into missing episodes I’d be here all night.
    Troughton:
    - The Power of the Daleks. I know I just said I was avoiding missing episodes, but that’s harder with this era, and this one is so iconic and you clearly loved Troughton in your first go so I’d be remiss if I didn’t put it here. It’s his very first and it’s amazing. I prefer reconstructions but for a newcomer to this stuff you might want to go for the animation.
    - The Evil of the Daleks. This one has an earned reputation as being iconic. Only one part survives so once again you’d have to deal with either reconstructions or the animation, but it’s worth it.
    - Enemy of the World. This is a top favorite for me. Troughton is in a double role and is absolutely incredible in it. The whole thing is extremely entertaining and gripping imo.
    - The Mind Robber. Incredibly enjoyable dive into some true surrealness and fantasy.
    - The Invasion. If you loved Tomb then you’ll love this, too. Fair warning that it’s 8 episodes and 1 & 4 are missing, but my goodness is it a good one.
Honorable mention to The War Games. Once again I don’t necessarily want to recommend the final story of a Doctor you haven’t seen much of (and it’s 10 episodes), but I don’t want to not mention it either because it’s really a standout.
    Pertwee:
    - Spearhead from Space. Very solid introduction to this incarnation and the UNIT setting.
    - Inferno. Absolutely incredible and gripping in the most intense, edge-of-your-seat kind of way. I was genuinely alarmed.
    - Terror of the Autons. First introduction to Jo, the Master, AND Yates, and just a super enjoyable story all around.
    - The Three Doctors. No need to explain why this one comes with a strong recommendation, based on the title! Extremely engaging, I love every second.
    - Carnival of Monsters. Another very fun romp that I find quite engaging and also shows off the dynamic of the Doctor and Jo well. They’re one of my favorite duos so I definitely recommend any of their stuff, but this is a good one to get a feel for it.

    4th - Seeds Of Doom
    5th - The Visitation
    6th - Two Doctors
    7th - Happiness Patrol

    My recommendations are:
The Daleks (original or the 90 minute colourised version)
The Web of Fear (First appearance of The Brig, albeit merely a Colonial)
Inferno (A Man in the High Castle riff with an evil Brig)
The Sun Makers (K9 has a Weeping Angel mode)
Caves of Androzani (Fives swan song)
Vengeance on Varos (this predicted modern TV, and Colin makes a couple of great ad-lib puns)
The Happiness Patrol (seems as relevant now as then, plus pink TARDIS)

If wasn't the orginal Doctor Who there wouldn't be, Doctor Who now! OK, despite the special effects, it's superior to the new in any shape size of form.

Keep up this series, it's great to have your fresh eyes on the Classic Who stories :)
I started doing my Classic Who run around about 14/15 with borrowing DVDs from the library (around 2008/2009). I wanted to watch in order though and have definitely struggled over the years without jumping too far ahead, though I'm now on Tom Baker's last series, and have seen eps from Syl McCoy, and saw the TV movie years ago.
My fave Classic Doctor is defs Patrick Troughton, he, Jamie and Zoe were just such a fantastic team :D
    Anyway, great video as always!

City Of Death was written by Douglas Adams who also co-wrote stuff with Graham Chapman and John Cleese, hence the cameo.

If you get to watch the unedited feature length version of Fenric it had a lot of the missing material restored, making the overall storyline a lot less messy.
    My recommendations to try:
    1st - Tenth Planet
2nd - Power of the Daleks (remade as animation)
    3rd - Inferno
    4th - Ark in Space
    5th - Black Orchid
6th - Revelation of the Daleks
    7th - Ghost Light

Great Video! I don't have many suggestions for Classic Who but I am currently a new Whovian watching nuwho before Season 1. I'm trying to think of episodes to rewatch but I think it's cool how you other Whovians have watched NuWho many times and barley any classic who

Great video as always! I recommend:
    1- The Aztecs
2 - The Power of the Daleks (animated reconstruction - I prefer the black and white version)
    3- Inferno
    4- The Sun Makers
    5- Black Orchid
6- The Mark of the Rani
    7- Ghost Light
If you’re looking to get into Big Finish at all I highly recommend Spare Parts (a 5th Doctor story which was a loose basis for Rise of the Cybermen) and Jubilee (a 6th Doctor story which was a loose basis for Rob Shearman’s Dalek)

Doing a bit of a Classic Who binge myself, so it’s cool to follow along as someone does the same. Although, I have to fast forward through the your commentary on Stories I haven’t seen yet. I started watching in order with Dr #5 and after I finished with #8’s telefilm I’ve looped back to the beginning and am now halfway through #1.

Excellent stuff once again! Here's my recommendation list, with a few notes that I tried to make as spoiler-free as possible:
1 - The Tenth Planet (Features companions you haven't yet seen, notable for introducing key features of the show)
2 - The Web of Fear (Notable companion introduction)
3 - Spearhead from Space (Features a companion you haven't seen before)
4 - Robots of Death (Features a companion you haven't seen before)
5 - Terminus (Features a companion you haven't seen before, generally underrated)
6 - Revelation of the Daleks (Just a good one)
7 - Paradise Towers (Features a companion you haven't seen before, criminally underrated)

    A list you might watch...
First Doctor- The Chase / The War Machines
Second Doctor- The Moobase/ The Invasion
Third Doctor- Inferno/ The Mind of Evil
Fourth Doctor- Genesis of the Daleks/ The Deadly Assassin/ The Talons of Weng Chiang/ Nightmare of Eden
    Fifth Doctor- Black Orchid/ Earthshock
Sixth Doctor- The Mark of the Rani/ The Two Doctors
Seventh Doctor- Paradise Towers/ Remembrance of the Daleks/ Silver Nemesis/ Battlefield...
Some are my favorites, some you will probably enjoy more than I do.
The disparity in numbers is not necessarily reflective of my more favorite Doctors. Although the two respective unrelated 'Baker Boys', Tom and Colin are ranked one and two for myself...

1st Doctor - The Web Planet - One of the most surreal episodes ever. It's like a stage play on acid.
2nd Doctor - The Enemy of the World - It's like a James Bond film, and the ending packs a punch.
3rd Doctor - Inferno - One of the darkest Who episodes, and Pertwee shines throughout
4th Doctor - The Ark in Space - May have inspired the first Sigorney Weaver "Alien" film
5th Doctor - Enlightenment - An epic space odyssey
6th Doctor - The Mark of the Rani - Introduction to another archvillain Time Lord (Lady)
7th Doctor - The Happiness Patrol - It has a weird neon-80s vibe to it, and McCoy is a tour-de-force in it
