College coach perspective: This advice is on point. I hope this goes viral. I've coached 6 years and counting in college within the NCAA and NJCAA. Currently at a Juco and some players think it's easier to play here but I carry a smaller squad so everyone plays immediately. I've turned down players who went on to play D2 and D3. My players have been scouted to play every division after two years here. I only charge $30 for our clinic so I don't bring other coaches in, but I attend D1 and D2 clinics. Academics are huge!!! Players also should pay attention to rosters sizes and internationals carried when looking at schools. I can't go a single day without a poor email or being spammed. Emailing coaches who are attending the same showcases as you can *almost* guarantee you at least a look unless weather interferes. I have a very small budget so it's important that kids come to my clinic and have highlights. I have been screwed over after signing kids or getting a verbal commitment but I'll never screw a player over. Dude I love the content and have been following for years. Keep up the great work. I hope these kids are actually listening to you.
I love this! I’ve been listening to Matt for 2-3 years now and man the results have been huge. I’ve noticed serious devopment and of course I don’t follow every single step he takes because my needs for soccer training may differ than his and so on and so forth. But with that being said, I definitely listen to his advice and soak in all the information he gives us. I’m currently an eight grader and as a college coach yourself, when do you personally think the right time send emails are? know they touched base on this in the podcast just wanted to see what a college coach themself would have to say on this! Thanks my man
@@Challenges-um2zd you should definitely be starting by 10th grade. 12th grade is too late. 11th grade is ok, but you could have been more proactive. I agree with what he said in regards on when and how to contact.
@A H I believe Matt has answered most of this for you already. You need a highlight video for sure, hands down. All the current seniors that didn't be proactive have shot themselves in the foot. Personally I suggest you train harder than anyone on your team and see if you can find a buddy to do the extra work with. Then get a job and save up to attend clinics. Not all the best players go D1. I've had players turn down D1 to come play NJCAA. It's all about what your need is. As a coach I also prefer NJCAA over NCAA. It's just preference. If you want to leave Kansas you can definitely can do it. If you've ever heard of the 10,000 hour rule you need to acknowledge that. You just skipped who knows how many hours while others were grinding. You need to try and catch up. Hope this helps. Good luck!
@A H since you're a GK and I'm a GK coach I'm going to highly suggest you don't ignore your feet. My starter from this past season was better with his feet than many of the field players and therefore it was impossible to not play him when his hands, IQ, size, etc was just as good if not better than my other keepers. You can see his highlight video on my page if you'd like. Just search: Wells Bridgforth
I’m currently a freshman playing at a D3 in Texas, and I can tell you all of his advice is spot on. I didn’t take the ideal recruiting route to play college soccer, because I didn’t even start playing club soccer until my junior year, so naturally I was late in my recruiting process. However, I think a lot of college players would also say they haven’t taken the “ideal” path and they still made it work. In the end, putting yourself out there and presenting yourself in the best way when it comes to soccer, school, and attitude will determine whether you get recruited or not. I love these podcasts, and this might be your most helpful one yet, keep it up Matt!🙌🏼
Great Video!!!! Wish I had this when I started playing college at my juco and then transferring to play D2 , great info and great advice !!!! All players that are looking to play college , listen to this advice !!!!!!!
TheArsenal21 juco is a good option to develop and raise your academics for you GPA. There’s a lot players in the division that are really good !!!! A lot of my teammates from my juco went to D1 after transferring, plus you save money !!!! If your wanting to develop and want the best chance to go D1 especially, go to a juco , there’s lots of great players and the competition is really respected !!!!
TheArsenal21 on top of that , use that time in the juco level to develop your skills and contact colleges during your time there !!!! Juco is a good option to grow your skills and it’s bring a lot of great opportunities after your 2 years after the juco level . Juco level is still a college level and it’s really competitive and great !!!! Great players there !!!! That’s why a lot of colleges scout there too !!!
Great video, really valuable insight for players, I found videos like this so beneficial when I was contacting coaches. I'm also trying to show the process of getting into college soccer and contacting schools if you live outside the US.
This was super helpful! thanks so much! For the next one you should focus on the semi pro life during college. How you came to play for the san jose u23's and what you do during the off season of college soccer during spring and summer.
I'm going to do a video on this on my channel as I have gone through the process from Scotland but the main things you need to do are ; - create a strong highlight video - maybe reach out to some agencies that can help with the process however it's possible to do it on your on - once you have your highlight video you can begin to email coaches I have a vid on how to construct a good email as does become elite on his channel, contact around a year before you would be going out but it can also be later for internationals sometimes. Really the only difference is that you probably won't be able to attend camps. If you're unsure and want a more clear pathway look into contacting a well known/ respected agency and if you have any other questions I'd be happy to help.
A behind the scenes of New Zealand/Wellington would be sick. Currently live there, and would find it very interesting to hear about some of the differences between New Zealand and the U.S (on and off the field). Any other behind the scenes of other countries you’ve been to I’m sure would also be very interesting, especially Germany 💪
I’m currently a sophomore in high school and Matt, thank you so much for making this it is very helpful and gives me insight into what to expect and what to look forward to.
I hope this meets well, what happens when your an international student and unable to go for clinic due to your not in the state and you need to attend that university how do you get coaches attention
Hi, this is a fantastic video, I looked at it from a parent's perspective and it was very helpful. I will be sure to check out the rest of the videos and to share them with my son when the time comes. Thanks again and congratulations to both of you on the excellent video!
Quick question about the highlight video: Instead of using the time on our highlight video to show our awards and achievements, can we just put all our awards and information on our CV that will be attached to along without highlight tape? Or would it be better to put the awards on our highlight tape as well? Great video btw, got a lot out of it!

Hey Matt, this was a great video about this topic. I want to suggest if you can make a video about how to reach a higher level but for those who dont have that great of academics etc. Such how you were chasing the dream when you were Germany.
I'm a first year in community college. Unfortunately I didn't get recruited to play in college and I didn't have the money to go to a university to get a chance to tryout and be a walk-on. Is there a way out of this situation to play college soccer next year?
Hlo..I'm a Rightback from India who's looking to play college soccer in the US.. I contacted and got replies from colleges like pima, CSU Monterey Bay, but all of them because of the corona situation I think are not willing to give good scholarships... Wat should I do?? 15k and 10k is just too much to pay
Im very interested in joining college soccer as a international student, do international students have to be twice as good for a college team to be interested? thanks Matt for the info love from Australia
What do I do as a an International player? (South African) I do not physically live in the US & I'm worried that it is gonna affect my chances of getting taken in by academies and universities. I'm 17 and in the 11th grade. Keep up the great content.
Hey man, there are lots if international players playing in college I'm from Scotlanf and I'm moving later this year to play in college. The process is similar as you just have to contact schools and send your highlight video. It's also important to sit the SAT you could maybe contact and agency if there are any near you but that's not necessary. I'm documenting my channel on my journey to college soccer and would really appreciate it if you would check it out. You will get some helpful tips on what to do as an international!
The grades were my biggest issue... I didn’t have anyone telling me, get your grades up. It was only when it was too late that I realized “hey dummy, there’s a million other players trying to get where you want to go, the coach is going to take them first because they won’t have to worry about them”. Hey Matt, I had got an ACL in my senior year of high school, So I wasn't able to get to any college team and I decided to go to a school that doesn't have a soccer team. Thanks a lot in advance !!
Is it worth it for a european (portugal) go and play college? I know it depends but just wondering because you normally talk more about non Europeans going to college.

Obviously by working hard and training but when you are not in very good teams, how could you improve quickly? sorry if this sounds repetitive or generic.
Declan McKenzie the actual college soccer season runs from August until November (December if you make the national tournament for the respective division) D3 is 6 soccer days a week I think D1 they have no restriction
GK Assist D3 schools can offer scholarships to international players. It has to be scholarships from the school though. Not grants or government/state ones. As well as only be academic if their studies qualify for them.
