CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The team makes their deamands of NSA Agent Bernard Abbott (James Earl Jones), and Carl (River Phoenix) asks for the female agent's phone number.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this tech-thriller from director Phil Alden Robinson, a group of five renegade computer hackers, led by Martin Bishop (Robert Redford), are hired by the government to steal a black box, containing a code-breaking machine, from the mathematician who invented the device. The government is able to persuade Martin to take the job by convincing him that they will drop a decades-old federal warrant for his involvement in computer fraud. Martin agrees and he takes his team on the mission, eventually taking the box. Shortly after the hackers have stolen the device, the mathematician turns up dead. Before long, the quintet realize that they've gotten themselves into more than they'd originally bargained for, as Bishop's old rival Cosmo (Ben Kingsley) enters into the fold. The eclectic ensemble also includes River Phoenix, Sidney Poitier, Dan Aykroyd, David Strathairn, Mary McDonnell, and James Earl Jones.

You used to actually be able to call the number the young FBI agent gives River Phoenix. Rather than use a 555 number, they actually bought the number and if you called it, you'd get a recording of two women talking who would reference "all you Sneakers fans."

The STORY is the important bit ... with social media companies controlling our lives and the NSA hacking everything (and then blaming it on "muh R..." with no evidence).

I finished the movie this afternoon and I loved these last few minutes. I was laughing seeing James Earl Jones having to work off of this great group of actors.
Talented actors and actresses can elevate any movie. This already great movie was blessed with a wonderful cast.
The story, the cast, the music, the dialogues...everything clicks in this movie and yet it is so underrated. One of my favorite movies of all time.

I love this whole scene, but the 10 seconds between 1:48 and 1:58 are just perfection.
- 1:48 Redford slides into frame with an audible scrape of his shoes
- 1:49 James Earl Jones' face strikes the perfect balance between annoyed and amused
- 1:51 The two agents cracking up, with just enough subtlety
- 1:58 NO! and Redford's slightly mugging reaction
I don’t know this for certain, but I am convinced 1:58 was the first and only take of that shot. Redford is reacting in real time to a full-force James Earl moment that he wasn’t expecting. Rest in Power, Mr. Jones.

Quite an underrated heist flick. Top solid cast of Ben Kingsley, Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier, James Earl Jones, David Strathairn, River Phoenix.

I saw the movie when it was released and still watch it sometimes. But when I see it, I can't help thinking of the death of River Phoenix... Such a pity, so, so young...

This is a profound movie that is underrated cuz it's so damn entertaining. Something about this scene always chokes me up. The bad guy gets away and the heroes escape with a pardon and a few hundred grand in goofy vacation prizes. Screaming for a sequel!

When this movie was made Republicans have been in office for 10 years and the country was in bad shape. The GOP were definitely not synonymous with good will. right after the movie came out, Clinton won & things got better. Until 2000.

One of my favorite films and one of the best ensemble casts of all time--watch out Oceans 11! The Scrabble scene is just magic with the combination of the score, lighting, camera angles, dialog, and then the big reveal.

At the time, the criticism was that the NSA don’t use guns. They still don’t.
I looked up Uzi photos and HKMP5. Definitely looks - and looked -more like an Uzi.
@@Tigerman1138 At the time, after the Reagan assasination attempt and also in Olympus has Fallen, the Uzi was considered the sub machine gun of choice for lots of government agencies (like the Tommy gun was for the G-men during Prohibition) due to it being portable and actually very reliable. Carl mistaking it for an Uzi is likely a pop reference and shows he may not know guns but watched a lot of TV.

I see admiral James Greer from the Jack Ryan movies talking with Robert Redford and his team. Ironic because this film sneakers came out the same year as patriot games and had James Horner music like this film.
One of my good friends in law school is named Jack. I've lost count of the number of times over the years where I enthusiastically said "Jack boy! Get yourself in here. Jesus, you look like hell."

It's unfortunate we never got James Earl Jones and Sidney Poitier in a serious film together. To my knowledge, the only other film they appeared in together was 'A Piece of the Action' which wasn't exactly Oscar material.

Honestly, I think the NSA got off cheap, i mean seriously what did they really have to do, clean up a criminal record, buy a fully outfitted winnabago, several round trip tickets, to various places. Whistler's ask, was too vague and Carl's was granted with zero cost.

This is such a fantastic movie, and the end scene closes it off perfectly. If I was Mary McDonnell I would have asked for at least $100 Million. But River Phoenix's choice by far exceeds all of the other teams' choices.

I kind of wish they could have figured out a way to work Ben Kingsley's character into this scene, if only just to add to the awesomeness.
