      Do you usually try hard to remove the fixed cup too on those cup and cone brackets if you are just servicing the bearings? I had trouble with a 87 Miele donation and had to settle for cleaning and replacing bearings/grease with the fixed cup on (no vise available).

    • @613.Rooster
      @613.Rooster 2 роки тому +2

      @@froggerc625 I try to get it out if I can with the park tool BB wrench and press to hold the tool on. You can make a tool out of a bolt, lock washers and nuts. Sheldon Brown shares how to make it.
      Remember, that cup is left hand thread.
      But if you got it clean and nicely packed with grease I'll bet you did fine with it.
      Cheers!

    I used to do garbage bike restos and give them to people in need...but I haven't done it for awhile as I hadn't had space to store bikes. The place I am living now has space and I might start at it again. Got a dual suspension kid's bike out of the garbage the other day, a girl's bike that the pink decals were sprayed over with silver, dripping paint on everything. Stripped the decals and silver paint off, but it needs grips, new decals, pedals, new cables, and a new chain. So I need another bike for donor parts lol I'll buy new grips/chain/cables. I've restored about 10 bikes over the summer but they all belong to my sister's kids...5 kids, two bikes for each kid (split family).

    Resto-modding a Trek Antelope 800 for a friend and this definitely the treatment that the frame needs! Not too expensive but a good revival.

    Well, you finally got a subscribe out of me for this one. The ‘88 Street Stomper was my mom’s old bike! Absolutely built like a tank. She rode the hell out of it for almost 20 years. I still have it, and it’s still kicking with most of the original components. Anyway, warmed my heart to see you revive this old beaut.

    I love it when the bike parts come off so easily. The first wash usually puts me in a good mood because it shows the true condition of the finish - generally better than it looks at first glance. I like look at stock old cars, motorcycles and bikes even if I wouldn't have bothered to look at them when they were new. Well done!

    Great lesson. I took three of my biking partners barn babies, a cluster of GT's and Diamond Backs, she had not ridden in 10-15 years, into one rideable bike in an afternoon. A second just needs a chain link. The third will make a great frame out SS and new modern parts. I have not yet encountered a BB that old as easy as yours today. The Force must have been with you. Got a free Walmart 20" pink full suspension with a bent front wheel that I just could let go to the dump. I'm not a hoarder, I just saw in my minds eye some kids that has no bike possibly having a bike. All that stands between them is me leaning to true rims on a zero risk donor bike. You've inspired me to fast-track that project and get in my wife's good graces (by getting rid of it).

    I did a similar resto a year or so back to a Trek 7000 fx that was thrown out in the trash for the crime of "not being used". Similar case, 80% of the work was giving it a deep clean. New seat, cable inners, grips and tyres had it looking as nice as the stomper here. Nearly the same colour too.
    Sold it for the price of the new parts plus a 6pak of beer for my efforts.
    The guy who bought it wanted to ride to work 3km, too far to walk but not far enough to drive and find parking every day.
    Everybody was happy and what was a good bike under the grime and neglect was saved from a one way trip to the dump.

    I work at a county water plant and there are tons of bikes picked up almost weekly that get left on our property. They end up in our metal scrap bins and it breaks my heart that I can’t take them (the company would fire me because it’s akin to stealing company property)
    On second thought I’m gonna need to ask someone about this problem.

    I have heard that they put string or tape or something like that on suspected abandoned bikes, if the owner removes the tape the bike stays, if they haven’t after some length of time then the bike will probably be removed to say, make space in a bike rack or just to tidy up
