Literally getting deeper back into BMX put that to a screeching halt. Hit things with hammers and do little jumps!
I don't even have a garage to work on bikes. I have a cubby where I work on them. I don't wear nitrile gloves, because I don't mind getting my hands dirty.

the bike community wether its mtb or cycling its all super pretentious and a lot of the time can be super expensive. always nice to find a youtuber that takes a different and more diverse approach to fun on 2 wheels

Totally get the guitar analogy, that was spot on. I'm 62 years old and still dragging home $35.00 bikes from Goodwill to transform into something rideable. I just finished an 80s Marin Muir woods, put 700c fixie wheelset on it, got lucky with "unicorn" gear ratio and chain tension on vertical dropouts. Thanks for the inspiration!
I am a guitarist for 35 years, and whenever a young player wants to know what guitar to get, I tell them to get the one their favorite player plays. They have to be excited about it. There's lots of guitars that are good.

One time i found a garage kept, all original Trek 400 with Suntour Edge in the dumpster at my old apartment. It's crazy what some people will throw away. I still have it 4 years later.
I am refurbishing an old steel frame bike as a gift for a friend. The thing is rusty. I am going to have a devil of a time getting the old cone style bottom bracket out, but at least it will be an interesting endeavor.
The fixed drive side cup is usually the toughest to get out. Get a penetrating oil product called Aerokroil. "The oil that creeps!" Its the best stuff I've ever encountered! It worked great for me on a 30 year old truck transmission I rebuilt.I only broke 3 bolts! Acetone mixed with auto transmission fluid works well also. Use either with lots of ventilation. Sorta nasty stuff, It's not great for your health! Soak it a few times a day for a week before attempting the removal.
Try to find a large bolt, big washers and hardware so you can bolt your fixed cup wrench onto the cup, then you might be able to hammer the cup loose. Remember it loosens clockwise IF it's a BSA shell.
If it's really stuck, put a hacksaw blade thru the shell, attach the handle, and very CAREFULLY and slowly cut thru the cup right up to the shell threads. This will allow the oil in better or you might be able to use hammer and punch to destroy, crush and remove the stuck cup inwards Sometimes you've got to get medieval on it!

@@rollinrat4850 I saw that fix and will try it if all other options fail. I am going to spray it down with PB blaster, and heat with a heat gun. That's worked quite a few times for me.

I didn’t realize I was doing this with my junk specialized but now after working on it for two months Im usually more excited to ride it than my other bikes, well above my FS and pretty darn close to my recently pimped 70s steel road bike. Love this mentality
LOVE the color. I just resurrected a blue Nishiki hybrid frame for the 3rd time. A friend found it in a dumpster and gave it to me because it was too big for him. I turned it into a mountain bike and rode it around Santa Fe and then got third in a Xterra triathlon on it! Years later, converted it into a singlespeed for my son to ride to high school. Then just last month, converted it into a gravel bike and it's fantastic for it. We just noticed it whistles when going fast into a headwind, so we are naming it "Whistling Death". lol

I have a deep love for cheap bike builds. Built up quite a few of parts bin bikes and they always seem to ride way way better than they have any right too. plus they have so much style!
Your videos are always a nice way for me to wake up with some coffee :) you're the one that got me into restoring bikes. I just finished a 1994 Bridgestone MB-4 Trail and she looks amazing! The paints a bit dinged up, and the fork isn't the original but my bike nerd buddy had a Logic fork for me and it doesn't match so somethings gonna get repainted. The bike, or the fork. I opted for some vintage TranzX bullhorns, those ones that curve inward like butterflies. It rides pretty sick too :)
Love the bike! I picked up what I thought was going to be a POS Cannondale for $100. A bit of tlc and $50 in tires and bar tape I have a most favored bike. And I was inspired to do it by watching this channel!

Great video and perfect attitude! You've been a great inspiration on my plans to build a 2nd hand store GT into a gravel bike. And with how modified my old peugeot is, I agree completely that the best bike is the one you want to ride the most! Stats don't matter as much as people think.
Great advice....I just finished a Peugeot MTB I bought at a flea Market for $10usd bucks. I sourced some used wheels and bits and it's a blast to ride. I kept the 3chainring cranks and big 6spd freewheel in the back. I can pedal up any mountain for miles.
The trendy 1x9 fad looks great but cost a grip upfront and doesn't work as awesome as the trusty 3x5or6. Booom😮 dang there I said it.🤣 I'm glad there's many old bike rebuilders out there tinkering away. Peace✌

When they pop up on marketplace, I send the person a message and etransfer them RIGHT AWAY. I don’t even see them. I usually don’t know what size it is. I just chance it haha
I call BS! All sorts of folks have old bikes, many not so old, that are forgotten and unwanted, taking up space in garages, gathering dust, cobwebs and rusting away in backyards.
You don't need to spend much money at all except for some odds and ends.
You need to be patient, persistent and creative and very frugal. Ive built dozens of bikes this way.
All my friends and friends of friends know I build bikes and donate stuff to my cause. I'll build singlespeeds and fixed gears, thrash them offroad until they break or I get bored with them and give them to somebody who needs reliable transportation.

@@gerriedelport6818 To be honest, right now with global bike shortages and people and kids climbing the walls at home, ALL bikes are in high demand now. This is what drives up prices for everything. Bicycles are an industry that thrived during the plandemic.
Yet still, plenty of people are too busy or lazy to spend time 'peddling' old unwanted junk. The name of the game is patience and persistence. Dont but what you don't really 'need'. Considering the price of new bikes, (its
only going up, no more sales!) $100 is dirt cheap for a functional bike that fits your need or even something you can fix up to fit your needs.

Love this video. I just finished a build of a "psycho-cross" bike using a Orbea Igorre 2008 cyclo-cross frame. Bought various parts of ebay to finish it. I have been out last three days on it. It is a joy to ride and my favourite of my 4 bikes. Canti brakes, bar end shifters, Mtb triple front n rear derailleurs. But double Ultegra chainset that came with bike. Cool and unique. 😊 And light and a good ride.
This is all just great life advise too. Awesome, motivating video! Coincidentally, I picked up an old bike off Craigslist today so I can learn how to work on a bike (and not be scared of breaking my expensive mountain bike)
All from my 6 bikes are built according to the same philosophy like these one! It gives a great satisfaction during use.

Currently working on my 1994 GT Tequesta and this video hit hard.. after watching this vid, it made me excited to use this bike to experiment with becoming a better mechanic, cyclist, and traveler
I'm late to the party but i like this. When i buy a random bike i like the colour of (my main motivation now) i just clean everything and throw tyres on it then change things after i ride it and figure out what i want to change.
That is an awesome build though at a franken parts I even love the forks they're so awesome thanks for sharing

That was excellent explanation about the breaking point of build project. I remember when I bought my first RC car and just upgrade the wheels with ball bearings instead of plastic bushings, and put better motor on it. I ride it on the street for a year, day and night, winter or summer, that was awesome, still remember those days. Then upgrade more, suddenly with corbon chassis, aluminum parts and special licenced rims and tires. after carbon chassis started to worry about screcths and breaking things and got no satisfaction with expensive mods and bright shining parts :/ years later it happens on one of my bicycle project too. Now I know what Im gonna do.

This is the inspiration I needed to just start building. Three projects just waiting for the “right” parts. Rubbish, get them moving and the parts will follow. “If you build it, they will come!”
Good advice. Get whatever you have up and running, then start the slow slog of parts upgrades. Be sure to keep the new parts you order in a spot where you can admire them before installation. Whisper nice things to them. Perhaps caress them in the night. "Soon I will ride you, my pretties"

This is what I've learned to do after many builds: ask myself what do I want this bike to do.
Great video. This is pretty much my approach - I'd rather tinker with something out of a dumpster and get it to ride then adorn bikes with latest and greatest. Besides - the funniest bikes are the one made as an amalgam of parts that should not work togather.
What annoys me the most tho are all the people saying "Why would you put ____ here? The bike is barely worth 'X'". As if personal value of a machine can be measured in money. All of my bikes are made of random assortment of parts which I wanted to be there.
I kind of like both, but I have way more fun with the more “disposable” stuff. It’s fun to build sentiment with bikes that were on the brink of trash, and keep changing them/making them more fun. Until the sentiment grows to preciousness. Then they are irreplaceable haha

Picked up a 1990 Hard rock off Facebook that was headed for the garbage. Only had one tire that was probably the original. Headset and BB thrashed. Been enjoying bringing it back but waiting for parts in the mail is torture! I hate staring at it I just want it to ride again!

I get more enjoyment taking something and building it as cheaply as I can. You be amazed what you can get for free and what people throw away.

Over the years I've built dozens of bikes from piles of 'junk' and unwanted stuff. This stuff is everywhere and it's free, you just gotta get creative and find it! Everyone I know brings me old bike junk they want to get rid of.
As long as a bike is functional, safe and reliable, it doesn't matter what they look like. They are simply transportation and freedom for somebody! Probably the best kind since ugly bikes attract less thieves!
I’ve been doing quite the same, flipping old trashbikes for friends etc. Usually I just singlespeed the rear and put some nicely rolling tires like schwalbe big apples and it makes a really useful townbike. Living in a smalltown singlespeed is enough, no need for gears. Guess it’s the ”k.i.s.s” -method

I have a new project after i finished my upgraded spanish 80s road bike.
Now I am working on a Marin dropped project from an unknown dude which made a sik paintjon on it. Got myself an xt 2x10 deore groupset second hand but i will be using a spare 80s front derailleur bc compatibility with the frame and some old 90s brakes for dropbars and wheels and the shifter of mountainbike inside. The 700c wheels with 35 tires, and i will feel like the coolest kid on the trail even if some things would feel insulting for purist who never compited with their 4000€ bikes
