Some of the most baller rims you could get back in the day! I’d relace it with some butted spokes and alloy nipples. Not sure if I would do radial lace or cross lace.
@RollinRat all good stuff. I’ve had radially laced wheels fail and had some that were great. And radial laced wheels tend to ride harsher too. And I think he is using cantilever brakes, so all he would “need” would be cross spokes on the drive side of the rear hub. But reliability is key even for competition. Having a failure during a race, especially when you are in the lead is no bueno. Been there...
Nice find. Back in the day you were a pro rider to have them on your rig. Whenever I see a deal like that its somewhere on another planet. Probably plenty of wheels like that sitting in garages with the nibs still on the rubber.
inspired by this channel, i took a look in the parts bin. i realized that i am a threadless adapter away from a full 1991 trek 930 single track drop bar monstercross build! i might need to find some new wheels... it never ends lol.
That’s one thing about 26ers, baller wheels can be had for not too much. I have a set of M950 XTR wheels with those cool grey Mavic rims and a set of Bontrager xlite wheels that are actually DT 240s hubs in my collection from diligent eBaying. Those are for my 1992 Kona Hei Hei classic titanium I got for $400 back in the early 00s.
Chain overshift damage is why I run the Pulling spoke on the inside of flange (rim brakes), I'm still on the fence w/ disc breaks, but I think it might be best to reverse that.
I so get the upgrade thing to the rock hopper. My next move is to do a 26" single speed and replace the wheels on my Bianchi with cassette rear and move the freewheel to the single speed. I personally like all color tires.
Built lots of retro's and didn't know what that bit was on the seat stay was for! Now I know thanks oh and thanks for the tip on mini V's with STI shifters, my 1x hybrid to drop bars works smooth! Loving your stuff from here in the UK.
I think black tires (Schwalbe Table Top or the nice gumwall version of those) and v-brakes honestly make this bike even cleaner... Especially right now with those black rims and black Ritchey parts on it. ✌🏼🤙🏼
Nice wheel setup 👍. I bought some gravelking tires not that long ago for my bridgestone mb5. Not really fast, but a lot more fun. And I'm resorting to a shorter stem as well. Thanks to you, Spindatt.
I was really excited to see the front white industries hub. I have a set of those hubs on my old trail bike! Rear is really nice with roughly 50 engagement points.
good QA sesh. I have a soft spot for white ind products and rockhoppers. extra points for both on the same build. my fixed build is a 96 rockhopper with white ind eno rear and MI5. absolute love for that thing. pursuit bars on fixed. just feels right.
@RollinRat that sounds dope af. mine's got the proprietary WI cog, so no double fixed cogs. I did pick up a double cog WI Freewheel for a mad steal at a bike co-op, but since i've got it on some slick 700x23's and use it purely as a commuter/tooling around bike, havent had too much need to use the freewheel side. kind of a damn shame tbh. have certainly tossed around the idea of using it for a ss trail bike
Super nice! Wheel are super important, back in my youth I had the org crossmax wheelset and they were super good and super light, for my retro build I had to search after a pair of unused crossmax wheelset, it was expensive but half the price what they were in 98 :P Gonna be fitted on my Crescent Lodur from 98 or my Schauff Hurricane XT(the bike that had the crossmax originally) The schauff with fully xt, crossmax wheelset, Hutchinson tires and indy xc was 10.5kg and it was considered light for a steel bike. Imagine if I had all that on 1.3kg Parkpre alu frame!
Sweet! I predict a Rivendell within five years. 🤣 BTW, have you thought about switching to mini-v brakes? More stopping power than cantis, and less likely to invert your fork than discs.
What type of cranks are on that? 110x5? I got myself some with 130x5. Right now there is a 46t chain ring on it and I‘m struggling a little bit to find a affortable smaller one like 44 or 42. Any suggestions from your side?
On the black rims: I have chosen to go for silver wheel on my new fixed gear, spa cycles mono audax frame, and silver component because I cannot stand the machined brake surface on black rims, it just looks a little out of place to me, and can't afford the anodised h-plus sons.
I strongly abide the "riding without a chamois" comment : As a bike messenger for almost 3 years now I always ride with jeans shorts (and we usually go full-leg jeans under -5°C only), it takes around 1 or 2 weeks to get your butt muscles and flesh used to the saddle (a good saddle is recommended) and then it's only a matter of having good quality jeans that will stand the test of time (and lots of rubbing on the saddle).
Awesome wheel set. The hubs are awesome, and most would know that but those rims, the mavic 517’s are totally on par with those hubs. Awesome
@@paulhiggins6024 no, no paint job! My bike, one year earlier and one size smaller, is beautiful in purple. No re-paint!!

Cool Stickers
Awesome!! And the black looks better.
1 lego, 2 legii?!
Do you have black cranks kicking about? I think that’d make her perfect!
Memory lane for me. I had X517s on my Whyte PRST1, with green Michelin Wildgrippers. They were a bit smaller than those SKs though.

Oh yeeess! 😏Please do some reviews on other peoples Bikes or builds! That would be FUN! 😬🙏
Agreed. That would be fun.
The rockhopper just gets better. Old shovel is in the comments😊🚲 and you answered my question, today’s a good day👍😎🚲🚗🛹

Nothing like just staring at THE bike and just taking it in.
This bike just keeps getting better .
Please can you finish every video with a slightly camp, but glorious 360 spin in chair "thanks for hanging out, goodbye"? Made my day... 😂

Best cycling channel I subscribe to....

Ooooh! Get you with your swanky pants XTR and White Industries hubs! 😍😍😍😍
The Peter McKinnon intro was too funny 😂

“Baller Wheels” would make a great company name.
CHAIN HANGER??? Mind blown. 🤯🤯🤯 I always wonder why that was there.
Yeah, me too! Who knew it was for hanging the chain off? :-/

Yes! Super stoked on the stickers!
I had no idea that was a chain hanger. I recently bought a thirty something year old frame with that feature and was curious about it's purpose.
Looks like a good upgrade! I'd replace that spoke though. Start now looking for the green tires. I like that look.
I wonder will the Rockhopper be any faster with the new/used wheels
Dam. Good 26" rim wheels are hard to find!
Looks dope
One of the problems of the N+1 rule is that you don't give the bikes the love they deserve can't wait to see what you do next to this one
What do you think about mismatch colored tires on a bike? More specifically black front, green rear?
Yes, it does look better.
3:35 I wondered what that was
Would you ever do an internally geared hub build?
Super nice!

Very enjoyable video. Thanks man!
Titanium skewer too

chenneling your inner RegularCars at 10:05.
🤞
Ow much was the wheel set?
no more tinker Tuesday?

Black rims to tie in your black cockpit and seat post
How much would you sell the Rock Hopper for, if the offer was right?
I bought a used garbage Magna bike just for the black wheels. Were they light and strong? Hell no! But they were black.
So when’s the steel full sus happening?
I wonder if you will change your mind on the Rockhopper being super slow now...
Same rims and rear hub as mine lol
Every time the Rockhopper is featured it makes me feel bad about how mine looks in comparison 😂
Marinara or Alfredo?
MAY-vic, MEEH-vic or MAH-vic? I'm a MAH-vic kinda guy. Nice score!
Mavic is a french brand, so definitely MAH-vic.
Not my cup of tea with the black and green but those are great wheels. I have a pair of those on one of my bikes.
More baller than the rhinos for sure!
No problem riding in jeans other than they blowout!
reasonably dangerous position of mac on the saddle ☹️
should've made that sticker more of a twin peaks reference...
Just say the word and I'll be submitting a couple of my bikes.

Xtr on a Rockhopper feels wrong.
@RollinRat good stuff on a meh frame seems a waste of time to me. Now if you'd put it on an mb1 or a zip - cool!
@RollinRat whatever sparks joy for you is what you should do.
How about some PAUL Canti's... Yummy
Here's one for the comments. I say it's pronounced Mah-veek.
You can play with my car if I can put it in ur driveway
Ride reasonably priced bikes aka I'm broke and can't afford anything else.
