  • Revisiting objects that you've already photographed is like revisiting old friends. In this video, I'll share the process that I went through to re-shoot Bode's Galaxy and the Cigar Galaxy, and reflect on the past moments I experienced photographing these two targets for my very first astrophoto. Bode's Galaxy (Messier 81) and the Cigar Galaxy (Messier 82) are two galaxies located in the constellation of Ursa Major, at a distance of 12 million light-years away from Earth.

My first astro photo was when I was 14 in 1970 of the Moon, taken with a handheld Kodak Instamatic pressed up to the eyepiece of a 4 inch reflector. I didn't take another until 2014 which I think was M31. Now I am out most clear nights, its addictive.

As a fellow engineer I have to live vicariously through you. My wife would never approve the purchase of a big triplet refractor like that or the 2600! Lol, guess I’ll have to start saving my pennies.
My first real attempt at something was M31, and at 440mm fl, it looks great!

That was a seriously good first image Kwasi!
My very first image.. Late 2016 was m42.. I went back to school later in life to finish a degree. Took two Astronomy classes as my science electives. I had learned why we don't see color when looking through an eyepiece. I wondered if my old dslr would show color. The school had an observation deck with a couple of telescopes (celestron 1100 CPCs). I hooked up my nikon d3100, took a longish exposure (I don't recall.. 15-30 seconds probably). Everyone present.. including my professor were blown away at how much color came through :) Shortly there after I discovered that astrophotgraphy was a thing.. and the rest is history.

Great resulting image.👏👍👏. My first image was of the Moon with my camera phone against the telescope eyepiece. 4 years on, still hooked ( with upgraded equipment) .

M81 and M82 were my first “real” capture too, this spring :) I can’t wait for autumn and dark skies in Sweden again! :)

Nice job. Consider getting a RC 6. Not that expensive you will be blow away on how much closer you can get.

Thanks! I already have my 9.25" SCT, so I could probably use that for a closer view on each individual galaxy. It's also nice to get multiple galaxies in the same field of view with a medium-wide scope.

@@AstroParkAstrophotography sweet. I have been waiting for my Edge 8. Finally coming. I got the RC 6. I’ve been so impressed. I think at 1400mm or less you can get both. I just took them the RC6 is 1370. I like your work. I’m guessing the 9.5 with reducer is unable to frame both. I’m in the Moab region for the next 3 weeks so I’m taking as much data as I can. Live stacking and using my iPhone/iPad apps to edit lol. Will have a lot of work when I get home.

Where did you get that pocket sky atlas (large version)? I have been looking everywhere for it.

I also have the large jumbo version, but I use it at home. It has a brown cover. The standard one has a blue cover, and that's the one I used in this video. I was able to find it on Amazon, but you can also order it directly from Sky and Telescope's website.
