If you do proper prehab/rehabilitation you can massively extend the lifecycle of your joints, it's not indefinite, wear and tear always catches up in some way, but maintaining the stabilizing muscles goes a long way, especially when you are on a heavy workout schedule.
The Soviet training systems were well known for being extremely brutal though, which definitely puts heavy stress on the joints, and I honestly can't imagine them doing that much in regards to joint health from what I've seen of these systems, not only Because it has only relatively recently became something people in the athletic community are talking about, but also because the training was largely focused on constantly maximizing output and only the best athletes with the best supplementation could keep up with it.
It's like Bulgarian Olympic weightlifting training, you either keep up or you break, and they train super heavy all the time without doing that much in the way of rehab work.
