And in the weekend have a fun car. Glad to see the cameras are now legal as mirrors. I really want a Volkswagen ID.3 :)

    If too many electric cars are on the road, the chargers, because they are occupied for longer will be the bottleneck. The first glimpse of what will happen just happened in the US over thanksgiving. Cars waiting in line for hours to get charged. Imagine that over Christmas in -20°C with no chance on running the heater because the car will have not enough charge left to get to the charger.

    EVs have definitely made a lot of progress and they might be great as a daily driver (in/out city driving) but they are definitely not there yet on a GT level imo. Based on this car, which has a ~300km range (assuming you drive rather conservatively) it would take me a ~1100 km Stockholm to Berlin drive roughly 16h30 (~1hr per full charge) instead of 12-12h30 or less with a regular car. I love doing long road trips, up to 5-6k+ km around Europe every summer, so those hours will quickly add up for charging pit stops. That is not convenient enough for me yet. So EVs while great overall, are not yet for everyone. I'll wait for the next couple of generations to come out and see what improvements they'll be able to make on the range and charging speed side of things.
    As for the whole "but the environment" rhetoric, sadly most EU countries still rely on fossil fuels for their energy grid so your EV is not really green as the carbon cost to manufacture an EV is higher than a regular car, and while it's designed to offset said cost and turn in a negative balance during the lifetime use of the car, having them powered by non renewable energy sources defeats that whole purpose. Here's a pretty telling graphic: I'm even willing to consider nuclear as "green" as well, it's still looking pretty bad for EV consumption atm. ec.europa.eu/eurostat/cache/infographs/energy/bloc-3b.html A quick look at your EV EU tour tells us that the Audi was charged as following %'s of the respective power grids: Belgium: 35% fossil fuel grid, Germany: 48.4% fossil fuel grid, Switzerland: 6.6% fossil fuel grid, Italy: 72.7% fossil fuel grid, Austria: 9% fossil fuel grid.
    Lastly, during your test trip everything was pretty much laid out for you guys, from available/empty charging spots to mobile charging trucks? Real life practical road trips would probably yield different results. Sorry for the long rant, but all in all, it was pretty cool to learn a bit more about Audi's e-tron strides. I just wish they auto industry would put in equally as much effort in building truly renewable based charging options.

    • @frankeinfish
      @frankeinfish 4 роки тому

      Oh wow, i did not expect to see you in the comments..
      Yes current EVs are only really practical for shorter trips such as commuting but that still covers the vast majority of all car travels so as soon as you have 2 cars there's very few reasons why the second car couldn't be an EV.
      Even if your grid is relying on fossil fuels to a rather large degree EVs are still significantly less polluting simply by being fed electricity from a power plant that is much more efficient than an engine at turning fossil fuel into usable energy. With that said in countries with a mostly fossil fuel grid it does of course feel a little odd to buy an EV only to be just a bit less polluting. Thankfully that's not the case here in Sweden.
      Lastly I'd like to thank you for your part in the GD Studio, to this day it's still the best Twitch channel I can think of and I have never even come close to watching streams as much as i did while GD Studio was a thing, not to mention laughing as much....
      Thank you.

    But who wants to go on a roadtrip with an electric car knowing you will probably spend more than 1h at least for one time probably more often depends how often you have to charge / how far you wanna drive. Audi planned that trip so the waiting won't be as boring as it would be in "real conditions" electric mobility is in my opinion useful in the cities but for roadtrips they should come up with some other "clean" solutions like Wasserstoff (don't know the english word google it)

    I am still not sold on the idea of EVs. They would make sense if they charge up fully in the same amount of time it takes to fill up a petrol/diesel powered car. Then there's the argument of how they are getting the electricity in the first place. Defeats the whole point if the electricity is gained from non environmentally friendly methods. Hydrogen fuel cell is another concept that's very intriguing. Toyota Mirai has that technology and it's concept sounds pretty promising.
