- Let's take a trip back in time to 1988. This was when Auto Manufactures were finally starting to come out of the 70's and figuring out more technology and updates to their cars. Ford was leading the way with their Aero design language with the Taurus, and GM was putting more and more technology in their cars. Digital displays in their Cadillac, Oldsmobile and Buick vehicles were very cool, and looked high-tech, especially when paired with their EyeCue Heads-Up Displays.
What we are looking at here is the digital instrument cluster in the very advanced and technology packed Buick Reatta!

I know I kept saying this is a Green Phosphor LCD Display. This is half-correct. While it is indeed a digital display, it is not LCD, but rather a Vacuum Fluorescent. The Touchscreen display is a Green PhosphorCathode Ray Tube display.
You are absolutely correct it is fluorescent still doesn't change that they go out a good friend of mine had a Riviera with the screen in it the factory went out replaced with a dealership new it went out he bought three more at the two of them went out in a five-year period he installed the last screen and sold the Riviera too expensive to have converted
I was a GM mechanic when these and many others like them were in production,
We were sending these out for repair or replacing them constantly, I'm sure these were a thorn in GM's side.
Ive been wondering how these vehicles were going to fare as they became old enough to collect,
The CRT screens did just as poorly, I was hoping to see some geeks building Raspberry-Pie or Arduino upgrades to the surviving cars.
I’m trying to trace down an issue with a 89 riviera with the same display..... all the test lights like battery and brake and such work.... but speed and such doesn’t..... cluster got rebuilt and looked over twice...... any direction I should check now that it’s an issue with the car
Samuel Capps, The aftermarket repair on these sketchy, I mean that in the ability to find someone who can actually do a good job or have much knowledge about these,
If you have multiple gauge reading out as well as the speedo I would start looking for a common ground issue,
If you can get a used dealer repair book on eBay do it, I was a GM mechanic and stole the iroc book, lost it and stole the second and only book they had, it will literally show me every circuit from top to bottom and has the best diagnostic steps to take,
I have never had any Chilton or other book come even remotely close as the GM book,
Lastly I would consider buying an another cluster, but only after verifying the you do not have proper input signals to the original cluster.

@@charliebinder2599it’s factory, looking into getting myself an 88 reatta with a cluster issue rn, one of the most technologically advanced cars at the time but that comes with its faults lol

Hold down TEST for longer and it'll go ahead and do the segment-by-segment light show again (just like it does when you close the door with engine off). When gas tank is below 1/4 full, press GAGE and it will show you a magnified view of your fuel level (magnifying your view 4x, so the gauge goes from E to 1/4) -- and press it again to go back to the full E-F view. Note that if the tank is above 1/4 full, you will have to hold the GAGE button down to see the enlarged view.

The Reatta Gauges and dash were redesigned and given a more elaborate digital display a few years later (1990 I think)...though the VIC was sadly discontinued in the process.
These are very unusual and unique cars the 88 and 89 model with the screen doesn't have the value that the 90 and 91 model have without the screen these screens are cool but they go out and where do you get one now thanks for the review

What's a gage? Isn't it gauge?
SDav21 Are you talking about the button? I’m not really sure. I think it’s used interchangeably with no real set standard.
Never seen it spelled gage before either...
Watch this video starting at 10:20. It "magnifies" the fuel gauge from 1/4 to empty to show more accurately the fuel you have left, so it changes the "gage" as is "size" of the fuel gauge. ua-cam.com/video/4o0I7gGgDO4/v-deo.html
Merriam Webster says "gage" means the same as "gauge", just a less common spelling.
