    Hi, one question: surely, like brass instruments, the whole series of overtones may be achieved on the shofar with the requisite skill? In other words, the first note (tonic) and second (dominant) that you played may be followed (with great difficulty, but followed nonetheless - at least in theory) by the octave above the first note, and so on and so on (in accordance with Pythagoras' division of a sound?
    p.s. nice playing by the way!! now I want a Shofar!!!

    • @johnbarnhart6613
      @johnbarnhart6613 2 роки тому

      You are correct, theoretically. But the shofar isn't perfectly formed like a brass instrument, and I think that inhibits some overtones even if you are skillful. I can get three notes out of mine, including one octave below the low note in the video. I have heard someone do the octave the first note in the video. But I don't think you're going to be playing any Dizzy Gillespie tunes, no matter how good you are.

    The shofar is also used for spiritual warfare in the bible, & is a musical cry to the Lord God.
    Several times in the bible when the shofar was blown, God would rescue His people by confusing their enemies & they would overcome them & defeat them. Another time the walls of Jericho fell when God told them to sound the trumpet (shofar), & again they overcame their enemies.
    This is a great weapon for spiritual warfare, as led by the Holy Spirit. Especially fitting for intercessors.

    Thank you, Alistair. Exactly what I was looking for. I have a question: I'd like to get a shofar like they blew in my old shul. It was like the smaller one shown in the opening two examples. The opening for the mouth is small, flat and irregular. I'm wondering what it's like to blow one of those. It doesn't seem nearly as easy.
    Mendel in our shul had a heck of a time with that difficult opening. From year to year we never new whether he was going to get a decent sound never mind a note. When the takia didn't go well, he'd start shvitzing. Then we'd all start shvitzing for him.
    He blew from the side of his mouth; it seemed that that was the only way he could get a purchase on the irregularity and narrowness of the opening.
    I guess what I'm wondering is, are you able to use that raspberry, frontal method of blowing on the smaller shofar shown in your examples?
    Thanks again. I loved it.

    • @AlistairCohen
      @AlistairCohen  10 років тому

      Essentially, the larger the 'opening' the easier it is to play.
      I've been playing the trumpet since I was in school, so I've trained my lips to tighten and loosen as necessary to change the pitch of the note. Some people who aren't brass players find this difficult, so prefer to play out the side of their mouths and then use their hands to pull their lips tight, or loosen them, to make the different notes.
      So you can 'blow raspberries' with the front of your mouth even on small mouthpieces if your muscles will let you. No way is better than any other.

    Greetings Mr. Cohen
    I came across this video to learn about the Shofar instrument but there is something troubling me. You see, I am a Buddhist and something I do is known as cosplay. Cosplay is the act of dressing up as fictional characters from things such as anime, cartoons, television shows and even video games. As a cosplayer and video gamer, I wanted to craft a Monster Hunter cosplay. Monster Hunter is a game series that has been around for 10 years and still going strong. The main point of the game is to go and hunt monsters. As part of the cosplay, I was hoping to use a horn. I came across the Shofar. Seeing the comments frightens me due to the fact that it is possible I may offend someone for using something related to Jewish culture for a purpose not related to it. If you have any further questions, you are free to ask.

    • @AlistairCohen
      @AlistairCohen  9 років тому

      Rams horns are essentially just early trumpets and were used by many groups as a means of sending a loud signal, not just the Jews.
      So (disclaimer: I'm not a religious authority or anything) using one in cosplay I'm sure is fine - maybe just add some elements to it to make it look less like a polished shofar and more like a part of the costume.
      Or, save some money, and buy a fake horn from a costume store as shofars tend to be reasonably expensive.

    • @legocontrollerjr
      @legocontrollerjr 9 років тому

      Alistair Cohen I came across a website a few days ago that were selling Shofar horns for around 20 dollars. It's most likely they were not real horns. Thank you for understanding. Also thank you for the video, now I will know how to use the Shofar and will likely have fun with it since I am a trumpet player. Have a pleasant day.

      i personally am glad you are sensitive to this because may Jews and Christians believe this shofar was given to us in worship for Jehovah our living God.
      All respect to user we do believe there is only one living God who came to earth through Jesus Christ who is the Savior of the world for those who will receive them he came he lived he died for our sin he's now in heaven where we will be some day with them so we prayed to a living God when you blow the shofar you're in agreement with what we agreed to if you want further questions answered contact us personally at info@shofarcall.com

    • @AlistairCohen
      @AlistairCohen  8 років тому

      lcjr Its very nice to be sensitive but as someone else commented, it's more symbolic than deeply religious. So I'd say no one would be offended if you used a shofar for your costume versus any other type of rams horn you could find/buy yourself

    * NAFAS TUHAN *
    Nafas TUHAN berbicara suatu KEHIDUPAN dan Nafas TUHAN juga berbicara SHOFAR yg kita tiupkan. Dan apa kaitan SHOFAR dgn NAFAS TUHAN?
    KEJADIAN 2:7(tb)
    ketika itulah TUHAN Allah membentuk manusia itu dari debu tanah dan MENGHEMBUSKAN NAFAS HIDUP ke dalam HIDUNGnya; demikianlah manusia itu menjadi MAKHLUK YANG HIDUP.
    Kejadian 2:7 (IMB)
    Dan YAHWEH Elohim, membentuk manusia dari debu tanah, lalu Dia mengembuskan napas kehidupan ke dalam lubang hidungnya, dan manusia itu menjadi makhluk hidup.
    Nafas hidup yg di hembuskan oleh Tuhan kepada manusia, turun temurun sampai kepada kita tetap NAFAS yg sama seperti yg manusia pertama terima dari Tuhan yaitu Adam.
    Setiap kali kita meniupkan shofar sesungguhnya kita juga sedang menghembuskan Nafas hidup yg daripada Tuhan
    + BETAPA DASHYATNYA NAFAS TUHAN +
    Oleh firman TUHAN langit telah. dijadikan, oleh NAFAS dari mulut-Nya segala TENTARANYA.
    MAZMUR 33:6.
    pada waktu itulah si pendurhaka baru akan menyatakan dirinya, tetapi TUHAN YESUS akan membunuhnya dengan NAFAS mulut-Nya dan akan memusnahkannya, kalau Ia datang kembali.
    2 TESALONIKA 2:8
    Di PERJANJIAN LAMA Tuhan mengembuskan Nafas HIDUP ke manusia, yaitu Adam. Supaya manusia itu menjadi makhluk yang hidup. Tertulis di Kitab Kej 2:7.
    Kejadian 2:7 (IMB) Dan YAHWEH Elohim, membentuk manusia dari debu tanah, lalu Dia mengembuskan napas kehidupan ke dalam lubang hidungnya, dan manusia itu menjadi makhluk hidup.
    ketika itulah TUHAN Allah membentuk manusia itu dari debu tanah dan menghembuskan nafas hidup ke dalam hidungnya; demikianlah manusia itu menjadi makhluk yang hidup.
    KEJADIAN 2:7(tb).
    Akan tetapi di PERJANJIAN BARU Tuhan Yesus mengembuskan Nafas ke manusia itu supaya setiap manusia menerima ROH KUDUS.
    Yohanes 20:22 (IMB) Dan setelah mengatakan hal itu, Dia meniupkan NAPAS kepada mereka dan berkata, "Terimalah Roh Kudus!
    YOHANES 20:22(tb).
    Dan sesudah berkata demikian, Ia mengembusi mereka dan berkata: "Terimalah Roh Kudus.
    Ada 2 ayat firman TUHAN yg menulis tentang TUHAN meniup SANGKAKALA/SHOFAR:
    A. 1 TESALONIKA 4:16(tb).
    Sebab pada waktu TANDA diberi, yaitu pada waktu penghulu malaikat berseru dan SANGKAKALA ALLAH Berbunyi, maka TUHAN sendiri akan turun dari SORGA dan mereka yang mati dalam Kristus akan lebih dahulu bangkit;
    B. ZAKHARIA 9:14.(tb).
    TUHAN akan menampakkan diri kepada mereka, dan anak panah-Nya akan melayang keluar seperti kilat. Dan Tuhan ALLAH akan MENIUP SANGKAKALA dan akan berjalan maju dalam angin badai dari selatan.
    MAKNA arti setiap TIUPAN SHOFAR:
    Bunyi SANGKAKALA bicara ttg 'TANDA'.
    Ada 4 SUARA/ jenis buka sangkakala:
    1.THEKIAH
    2.SHEVARIM
    3.THEKRUAH
    4.THEKIAH GDOLAH atau
    TEK GDOLAH
    1.THEKIAH
    suara yg mendeklarasikan
    Keinginan Tuhan utk menegakkan kebenaranNya di suatu batas wilayah atau area tertentu.
    2. SHEVARIM.
    utk mendeklarasikan keinginan Tuhan utk menerobos batas2 & menghancurkan setiap perlawanan yg tdk sesuai dgn kehendak Tuhan.
    3.THERUAH
    -sebuah alarm atau suara yg mengejutkan,digunakan utk
    Mengumumkan secara tajam kedatangan BAPA YHWH di tempat itu.
    4.THEK GDOLAH
    -mendeklarasikan kepenuhan & keseluruhan perpanjangan dari kemuliaan Tuhan & kekuasaannya.
    Suatu kemenangan terjadi.

    That's not all you need to know , the short shofar causes repentance in hardened hearts with prayer the spiritual warfare uses of the shofar are important to know as well as the one's used to worship in the holy feasts of YAHUWAH Yahshua

    just found this which kind of answers my question:
    ua-cam.com/video/yBHqTHFwnAw/v-deo.html
    at about 8.45 a few more of the overtones can be heard. The longer the shofar, the lower the initial pitch (and probably easier to hit the high notes).

    I would love to finish this video, but the background music is so loud that I cannot hear you. I got through about 30 seconds. Consider us older learners and turn down that delightful background tune. Todah!

    While we are here, let us share the Love of the Spirit of the Father. The Messiah will pray to the Father, that we may have the Spirit of the Father, for a Teacher, and Comforter, Forever in the bible book of John, chapter 14, verse 26... Peters witness of the Last Supper, in John, chapter 14, is Acts, chapter 5, verses 29 through 33... Peace children

    Always remember to repent of your sins (sin is transgression of YAHUAH’S LAW: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, & Deuteronomy) And Have Belief On YAHUSHA HAMASHYACH. HE Died and Rose three days later so that you can be forgiven of your sins!

    I still can't blow my shofar to save my life. It's just a tad smaller than the one in this demonstration.
