I think if you can afford to when you build a new computer it's best to start with an up to date platform so you have an extended upgrade path for your CPU, modern PCie interface, memory etc. I'm still on AM4, when I switched from my old Z70 4th gen i7 build I got a cheap deal on a used Zen 8 core so the net cost for switching was the cost of the new PCB, I replaced that with a budget Zen3 6 core a couple of years ago, which is a much better gaming chip. I'll probably change platform again next year and start with an entry level chip but fast RAM so I can just use that for the entire lifespan of the build.

Prices for DDR5 are actually great? You don't need 6000/30 32GB for a 7500F. Even if you did they are around $120/120€ which is a really good price for what is the current gen best RAM in the market. You can get 2x8 5600/30+ for around $70/70€ which will do fine with a CPU as low as this one.

Based on the performance from both CPU's, if you were looking for an entry level gaming rig (which is what this video was about) I would be choosing the Intel i5-12400F. The only game it really lost out to (compared to the Ryzen) was Cyberpunk, and if you're building an entry level system then you won't be using an RTX 4080 Super, in which case your GPU will be more limiting than your CPU. You can also use the much cheaper DDR4 RAM instead of DDR5 for the Intel platform, allowing you to get more RAM for your budget (even entry level gaming builds should have 32GB IMO). And let's not forget that you can upgrade from a 12400F all the way up to a 14900K or 14900KS.

The price bottom for used parts here is around 120€ for the 12400F and 170 for the 7500F, so I would easily go with the 12400F. Also the Fortnite result I would actually much prefer the significantly better lows on the i5 over 30 more fps after already having 300. It's a much more steady experience when the frame rate fluctuates less wildly and especially drops below 80fps are noticable.
You can also very easily get the processor with the iGPU (the 12400 or sometimes also 12500) and still get away even cheaper with a DDR4 LGA1700 Motherboard and DDR4 over those pricy AM5 boards and DDR5. The performance benefit just isn't there to justify the extra cost.

Those results seem odd to me.
The Ryzen 5 7600 is only a couple of % faster than the 7500f so theyre almost identical.
At the same time, the 7600 is according to pretty much and major reviewer I know around 10-15% faster than the 13(!)400f, 20-30% faster than the 12400f.
So actually, the difference between the 7500f and 12400f should be more like 20% on average at least

Bought the 12400 when it came out. Also had a 5600x on a b550 mobo, both with ddr4 3600 cl18. I liked the i5 more than the ryzen. Lower power needs, less heat, overall faster. Now on a 12600k with b760 and this is still what I would choose over these two here, even over the 7600. The 12600k sometimes can be found under 180 euro new, even lower used. B660, b760 mobos also dropped in price. Not to mention ddr4 support. A nice b650 mobo is still 200 euro, and going am5 on a cheap mobo with future proofing in mind won't end up well.

Right now in the US the 7500f isn't available but the 7600 is and is %187. By comparison the 12400f is $110 and can get by with ram for about $50 less. $125 saved on the CPU and ram will get you a significant GPU upgrade for the price which will help with gaming and many professional applications. I would go with the Intel and tier up in dGPU.

Though if you watch…like right at Black Friday sales in the USA, I picked up an i5 12600kf for $140 from Amazon. Got a z690 board that was open box for just under 100 and drop in 32gb of ram for around 50 bucks. Not a bad combo. Just saying if you watch you may get a deal on the better CPUs.
At this point the ryzen is probably worth the asking price. The 12400, I mean it’s not bad but I’d say if you have a little extra maybe try to get a 12500 or a 13400 with the e cores which may help a bit more. But if you are on an extreme budget the 12400 should still be decent.

But there is two advantages on the 12400f side - there is cheaper MB available for socket 1700 even with ddr4 support (but in 2024 I will try to avoid new ddr4 builds) and some b660/760 boards with bclk overclocking for 12th gen CPU, like Asrock Reptide series. And with overclocking result will be better with 12th gen (you can choose 12100 or even Pentium g7400 to play with) when you hit 5+GHz then with overclocked Ryzen, even that 7500f gain maximum percentage of improvement in overclocking due to minimum frequencies of all Ryzen 7xxx parts.

Don’t have the 12400, but the 12600kf. Pretty happy with that. As a long time amd user, around 20 years, I went with Intel around Christmas for the first time. Part of the factor with socket am5 at least at the time was cost. I think they are getting better with it, but at that time I got the 12600kf for about $140, z690 board for about $100, and 32gb ddr4 3200 for around $50. So decently happy with that and I can upgrade to 14th gen Intel if needed. At the time I think for a comparable am5 rig you were talking about an extra $100 or so. So on a budget I went with Intel.

7500F is what the 5600 was for Zen 3; has the same cache as the 7600/7600x, built on the same architecture, uses a single CCD, and the only thing it lacks compared to its Zen 4 counterparts is an iGPU. Which was typically the “norm” for Ryzen CPUs aside from the -G SKUs that did have one, but at the expense of less cache, lower PCIe support, and having the power draw split between the cores & iGPU. Regardless I’m happy to see that the 7500F is about as good as it gets for being “entry level” for AM5. Personally I’ve been content with my 5600 running at 4.8Ghz all-core + 32GB DDR4-3200 CL14 + 3060 Ti (also OC’ed to around 2100-2140mhz when fully utilized). But I’ve been debating on whether I should just throw a 5800x3D into my existing system (after I get either a 6800 XT or 4070 Super soon) or upgrading to AM5 / LGA1700 (would be happy with a 12700K or 13700K when it comes to the latter). Since I’m kind of torn between wanting to get the most gaming performance as possible on the CPU side of things, but I’d also like to have something like one of the aforementioned i7s where they can typically handle even the most powerful GPUs with minimal bottleneck and they have those E-cores which make them capable for other tasks outside of just gaming. And even with them being “slower” than the P-cores, they have similar IPC to Skylake / Kaby Lake. So yeah lol, I’ve been very interested to see how a CPU that’s basically a much faster 11900K with 1 or 2 i5-7600Ks (based on whether I get a 12700K or 13700K) would perform.

I planned for upgrade to 14th gen i5 or i7 which will still work on my current mother board down the line after 4 to years later by then am5 will be at EoL. I really like this segment of the market. My family doesn't need super high-end stuff to get what they need. A case in point is my wife's 12400/RTX3060TI/32GBDDR4-3600 based system. She can game pretty much everything she wants on it and it's great for Resolve and general productivity. She works remote for that Redmond megacorp and her 'battlestation' is more than enough for her daily work. I will probably upgrade her to a 14700 at some point if she complains about the performance but for now she seems to be perfectly content.

5600 has low single core performance compared to 12400f on DDR5. But on DDR4 it's much same.

I don't have any experience with the Ryzen 7000 platform, but I have a couple Ryzen 5000 series in the house as well as a 12700 non K system in the kids room, I will say I don't have any issues with the Kids PC, they run everything under the sun pretty well, but I did upgrade from DDR4 to DDR5 on the 12700 and it made a little bit of a difference in the 1 and .1 pct lows, I noticed much less stutter, it is paired with a 3070, and the kids all play fortnite and by far the intel system with the nvidia gpu runs fortnite much better than the Ryzen systems with a Radeon GPU which is what is in the other two systems. This is rather game specific though as the other PCs tend to trade blows. Thanks for the videos, I always enjoy them.

You can test raw performance with RPCS3 ps3 emulator. It needs really powerful cpu to run, specifically games like Uncharted 1 and Infamous 1, The Last Of Us (but I think it's a little redundant to emulate because it's more taxing for the pc than the actual remaster) and God of War 3 and Ascension. There are a couple more, but this are the more difficult to run (that I know).

the clock speed is the defining variable in this match up. the i5 base is 2.5 and can be boosted to 4.4 while the ryzen has a base of 3.7 and boost of 5.0ghz even. making the amd cpu the higher performer. but I would still chose the i5. or spend the extra $50-$75 to get an i7. intel just seems more stable across the entire spectrum of applications. in my opinion

Being a used tech guy, I would toss in the extra fiver for the R5 7600 although the 7500F can be found new with manufacturer's warranty. I know nothing about how intel series come about* and cannot get my head around why they seem to hate their buyers by making 500 chips in nonsense (to me) categories. I understand a b c d e f , you know linear grading. Same with my gpu. Keep it simple stupid is a solid way to grade cpu/mobo/gpu.
Cheers for the video, only watched to see the 7500f live in hopes of upgrading our youngest' sons 4500. The 4500 has served him great as he is 5 and did not play cpu intensive games but he has moved to trying out building a game with Unreal 5 and will need something stronger for light editing and creation to back his 6700xt. I would just swap his rig over to a 4070 super if Nvidia had not gone off their rocker with pricing.
