Hey! Been following you and just realized that you live super close to where I live now 😂 just moved to Chandler so would love to connect someday and chat. I also got an FX3 recently so been checking out Your videos
Was thinking about getting one of these. I loved the SmallHD lines but I needed a 5 inch. Luckily I was able to get a really good deal on a used 502 bright model. And it’s good to know that if it fails on me or breaks there are new 5 inch displays SmallHD is producing
The buttons sticking out on the 701 lite, and their attempt to fix it (but they didn't) is why I haven't bought a SmallHD since. I loved that monitor until the button went wonky and even sending it in didn't fix it :(
Honestly the key problem with the Focus 5 is that they can’t reasonably be repaired anymore. It’s extremely difficult to find replacement screens for it. Remember however as well the Cine5 is a replacement for the 502 Bright, not the Touch 5. This looks like a great monitor and it’s on my radar for future monitors but I hope they open up the camera control capabilities long term to cameras like the B series from Panasonic.
Yeah, you're right--it's part of the new line up replacing the 502 series I believe. Yeah, since the Focus 5 has been discontinued it's gonna be difficult to get much technical/repair support anymore. I do think it would be awesome if they added camera control support from more cameras like Sony and Panasonic also! We'll see, they usually reserve that for really high ends cams like RED and ARRI though.
@@chadwin unfortunately it’s discontinued because they can’t get screens anymore, not because it’s discontinued we will have a hard time. I talked with SmallHD tech department a while back because I have two with failed screens. One because of a crack and one because an internal ribbon cable broke. The screens used to cost $40 direct from the manufacturer, now even SmallHD can’t get them.
Honestly, I’m cheap on batteries usually and just get 3rd party ones on Amazon like Wasabi. I’ve been using an NPF to v-mount adapter recently tho to power my monitors and it’s been awesome! amzn.to/3ucISPu
heck yeah! I definitely think it's worth it if you need the professional inputs/outputs, a really bright display and like Page OS. I'll have to work on another video diving deeper into Page OS.
Hey man thanks for the review, nicely done and comprehensive. Do you think the Cine 5 is bright enough under full front-lit sun to not needing a sun-hood while trying to nail the focus? How reflective is the panel and do you find the reflection to be a problem while trying to pull focus under full daylight? Lastly, how hot does it get? I know the Cine 7 you can literally cook an egg on it and it's 'only' 1800nit... thanks man, liked and subbed!
Yeah, I think it’s definitely bright enough but if you’re getting a glare, you’re definitely gonna wanna tilt the monitor some cause they make it hard to see the screen no matter how bright. It does get warm yes, but I haven’t had any overheating issues yet. The internal fan seems to work pretty well
Yes, it has a 2-pin lemo connector, or you can you use NP-F plate, and connect a cable with a D-Tap connector to connect it to any V-Mount battery. You need to buy cables separately, no cables are supplied with the monitor.
Yeah, it seems like a strange comparison on the surface--but honestly there aren't any other SmallHD monitors at an in between price. mostly just jumps from 500 to about 1,200. The Focus 5 has been extremely popular, so for a lot of people that have one, this is useful if they're thinking about upgrading to the next level. albeit, it is a price jump!

2x anamorphic capable? stretched and non cropped anamorphic?
@@furkonige yes! You can set the anamorphic mode to any stretch ratio you need with a custom input.
@@furkonige yes! It can do 2x anamorphic or any other variation you need. You can custom input the stretch, i.e 1.3 or 1.6
Which monitor mount are you using?

Nice! Glad to hear you got a good deal on the 502 monitor, those are very nice also! Yes, the Cine 5 is a good option if you ever need it

The cine 5 and Ultra 5 has a HUGE price gap, but I do like the side buttons on the ultra 5. Plus the 3000 nit brightness.
Sadly they don't offer a Sony NP-F plate for the Ultra. For my 503 Ultrabright i have one.
Good review! Just a quick note is that SmallHD has their own standard for locating pins so accessories made for Arri locating pins won't work...

Hey could you recommend batteries for the cine 5? Which NPF's are the most reliable?
Honestly, I’m cheap on batteries usually and just get 3rd party ones on Amazon like Wasabi. I’ve been using an NPF to v-mount adapter recently tho to power my monitors and it’s been awesome! amzn.to/3ucISPu
Was thinking about getting one of these but I am absolutely sold after seeing this video. Yes, would love a deeper dive! Thanks for this though :-)

How much?! Sweet baby Jesus! I get it’s a great bit of kit but it seems the CINE tax is a bit extreme on this one!
It’s definitely not cheap, but it is a really high quality monitor with all the Cine features you could need.
Why did you not address fan noise?
Hey! My SD port on the Small HD indie 5 is super strange! Card keeps getting stuck. Can you advise at all? Random I know! Thanks!
Hey Curious, did you every make an updated video doing a deeper dive into the set up of the monitor?
I still need to make an updated deep dive into all the settings video!!
Great review. How is the noise from the Cine 5? Asking because I use an on-cam shotgun mic for doc-style shooting. Thanks in advance!
As always-excellent review! Your knowledge of these things constantly amazes me!!❤
Thank you!!

@@chadwin that's great thanks for the reply man
can you shoot 60 or 120 fps and be able to see what youre shooting?
Yes. It does support 60fps. I need to test 120 fps tho.
When you hit record on the fx3, does it also show you’re recording on the monitor?
Best video I've seen on this monitor - super helpful. Will be picking one up.
Are they the NP-F770 batteries? Just want to be sure which ones to buy:)
Great review. But how much does it weigh?
Id love to see a deep dive into all the features in particular the cinematic
How does the ninja v plus compete with this?
Battery killer smallhd
My basic requirement is a waveform monitor. Do they both have waveform monitoring?
Have you had any issues with fan noise when using a shotgun mic? I just got the indie 5 and and just figuring it all out.
did you ever hear back on this? I've heard the fan is loud.
Can I power the monitor off an external battery? Like a V Mount?
Yes, it has a 2-pin lemo connector, or you can you use NP-F plate, and connect a cable with a D-Tap connector to connect it to any V-Mount battery. You need to buy cables separately, no cables are supplied with the monitor.
Can you use the touch screen on the Cine 5 for focusing with the FX3?
no

I live in AZ and it’s cold out 🥶
So you are comparing a 500$ Monitor to a 1500$ Monitor?? WTF
