- On July 1st, 2019, Iris van Herpen presented her latest Couture collection, titled ‘Hypnosis’, at Élysée Montmartre in Paris.
The collection is inspired by the hypnotic manifolds within our ecologies through the work of American artist Anthony Howe. The three-dimensional cyclical harmony of Howe’s kinetic sculptures is the wind beneath the wings of this collection. Howe's spherical ‘Omniverse’ sculpture explores our relationship with nature and intertwines with infinite expansion and contraction, expressing a universal life cycle. The meditative movement of the ‘Omniverse’ serves as a portal for the collection and the models, encircling a state of hypnosis.
The collaboration with Howe evolves ‘in an ecstasy of attentiveness’ through the symbiosis of all the elements of nature that are dependent on each other. As one of the key pieces of the collection, the finale ‘Infinity’ dress comes alive on the breath of a finely balanced mechanism. An engineered skeleton of aluminium, stainless steel and bearings is embroidered with a delicate layering of feathers in cyclical flight; revolving around their own centre. ‘Hypnosis’ reflects the beauty and complexity of our environment, exploring the patterns and structures within its fragile landscape.

She’s the most original designer I’ve seen in decades, a true visionary for the ages. Not to mention, a technical genius when it comes to execution of an idea. Holy cow.
In 50 years we will talk about Iris as we are talking now about Coco Chanel. She has created a style that is recognizable and eternal.
I think Iris van Herpen is Coco Chanel of future. Every collection is so innovative, so fresh, so timeless, JUST SO IRIS VAN HERPEN.

I've shown my parents this show. My mom is 52 and my dad is 60, they live in a small town in central Chile, they don't know anything about fashion and they don't really care about it, BUT while they were watching this, my dad told me this was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen (no joke) and my mom gasp with every look followed by a "that's so beautiful" or in good chilean spanish: "me cago que lindo!"

The lighter pieces look amazing against darker skin tones because you can really see the movement and flow of the garments. I really wish she had more woman of color on the runway. So fabulous and elegant.

Eh I think the effect looks cool on many skin tones. On the white women it makes it hard to really see how the visual magic trick works and makes it look more magical.

Iris’ installation never ceases to amaze me. The aesthetic, the details, the movements, the dress, the amount of artistry works in each show is amazing.
These comparisons with McQueen are futile. Iris Van Herpen is not the next Alexander McQueen. She is the logical evolutionary next step of what happens when McQueen has a lovechild with the eldritch space anemones of Proxima Centauri, which for some reason decides to visit Earth for weekend hobby classes. Thanks Proximan fashionistas for this glimpse into intergalactic trends.

Look mcqueen is good, but Iris is just way better.
Dark Glow... bruh chill. It’s just an opinion. I respect McQueen but I, too, prefer Iris. Nothing wrong with that. One can have preferences and still appreciate the artistry of other designers.
As a straight, 54 year old man, who usually thinks that most, not all, but most conceptual modern art and fashion is an indulgence of egos by the designers, and a lot of time, it has me wondering why is it even necessary and praised by so many?
But, as an art lover, and a man who has had girlfriends that were runway models, print ad models, and being born and raised in Los Angeles, you can learn to appreciate certain things that may be different than what you are used to.
This designer's showing of these outfits is a good example of what I see as really incredible design elements, amazing craftsmanship, and the use of material that may be totally impractical to wear other than on a runway, but it has to be the most stunning fabric I've ever seen. Some of the individual designs were very far out in the imagination of the designer. Although they aren't "daily drivers", the fabric met with the design and made such beautiful clothing, I was really blown away.
Spectacular work. Huge talent. Amazing creations.

I try, I try... It would be so drama-time. However we want to see these works floating, fluttering like a love whisper; we also forget to underline how she uses her models, and the playacting they give as little idols. We are standing in front of superior aliens... So acting as our daily grind forces us with these implausible dresses amounts to mix too many conflicting moods together (breaking the myth): we fall on eccentricity. I do not know what is the best moment to put them on - without creating a discrepancy. I love Van Herpen by the way.

Iris has a perspective of fashion that's almost scientific. It's like you're looking at both a dress and a diagram of how nature is structured. Like looking at a moth's wings, it's both scientifically and and visually fascinating.
