So I’ve seen an interview with Brian where he explained that he wrote this song about another love affair of Freddie’s that went wrong. Further he said they never discussed it as they never discussed meanings of songs. So when Freddie says it’s a special song I think that meant it was relatable for him - and maybe he know it was from Bryan for him? What a tribute to their friendship. ❤

So you do know there’s more to Queen than Freddie’s diagnosis? The whole band wrote songs about a whole range of different topics, but Freddie sang them as if he wrote them. I don’t know how you thought Save Me was about AIDS! Did you know Freddie was a natural baritone but jumped out of his normal range to tenor for most of his career? Effortless for him. Check out Freddie and Montserrat Cabale, you’ll see for yourself. But it’s Freddie’s vibrato during Play the Game that is truly incredible. I could listen to it on repeat all day. A study was done on Freddie’s voice. Apparently, and you probably know anyway, that a normal singer’s vibrato is between 5.4Hz-6.9Hz but Freddie’s was 7.04, even higher than Pavarotti! So yes, there is so much more to Queen and Freddie than his AIDS Diagnosis. Don’t assume anything about it, he wasn’t even diagnosed until 1987, this concert was in 1981. Other than that, I enjoyed your reaction as always. Please check out Too Much Love Will Kill You, and don’t draw any conclusions from the title. It’s not about AIDS either

These Are The Days Of Our Lives isn't about Freddie and his diagnosis, it's about Roger Taylor analyzing how he lived his life, but everyone including the fans got more carried away with nostalgia and assumed the song is about Freddie.

He liked everyone to interpret them for themselves, but he and we were all in the dark about his illness till much later/too late. Even the one where he says goodbye to fans was written by Roger. Still a great reaction to the music though!

I read somewhere that in a previous concert with Save Me, Brian started on the piano before Freddie started singing (to be fair he does have his back to him and no earpieces). Jeffrey, I just discovered your Queen reactions today (May 18, 2021). I must say that you do the best and real reactions to Queen. Very insightful, thought provoking, and giving us new looks into the talent, depth, and breadth of Freddie and Queen. I'm an older rocker chick (67), who became a Queen fan in 1974. What an amazing musical trip it's been with the greatest rock band and singer/frontman, Freddie Mercury. It's great to see a younger person as yourself appreciating this legendary music and performances. It's awesome that you have an ear and an eye for each band member. Thank you so much for your posts. Keep them coming!!!.

As an avid Queen fan of over 35 years, a great reaction. However, a few simple facts, Freddie didn't write this song Brian did, he wrote it about a "break-up" of a relationship/marriage, which I suppose you could read into it in many ways, he could have wrote it about his own marriage break-up, or (which I think) about Freddie's break-up with Mary whom he loved dearly, the words are more befitting (I think) to Freddie and Mary's break-up, I guess we'll never really know, which is another appealing aspect about Queen.
Also, Save Me had nothing whatsoever to do with Freddie's AIDS illness/diagnosis., and I was (especially in this day and age) quite shocked and taken back when you state "Freddie .......AIDS his STD which he was dying from" is arrogant and comes across as such. AIDS is not purely an STD disease and can be contracted in MANY MANY MANY ways, . Save Me was released in 1980, 7 years before Freddie even started to "suspect" that something may be wrong with him. RIP my hero Freddie Mercury xxxxxx

This is Montreal 1981 way before Freddie or most people had any idea about the aids crisis. Save Me was written by Brian about a friend going through a divorce. Brian now has an animal sanctuary called Save Me! There are a few songs that people assume were about Freddie being ill that weren't. Who Wants To Live Forever was also written by Brian for the Highlander soundtrack in 1986. It is about an immortal man who falls in love and outlives his wife and is lamenting that he lives while she must die. The performance at Wembley or Budapest is beautiful.

Oh mate! You had me so invested and then you had to come out with it! Why? Why do so many reactors have to assume everything is about AIDS? Freddie didn’t write this song Brian did, about a friend’s marriage breakup, and it’s so beautiful. Freddie wasn’t even diagnosed until 7 years after this concert, although ironically and tragically, it was 10 years later on this exact day, that Freddie died. It didn’t matter who wrote the song, Freddie put all his emotions into it.

Through his whole career he was wronged by the tabloids, and readers knew no better because of course you couldn’t just Google for information back then. So when a reactor jumps to conclusions about lyrics I’ll set them straight if I can. Ive seen several reactors lately, and even some listeners assuming everything is to do with Freddie’s illness. There were I think, three people just other night, commenting on a reaction to Bo Rhap saying Freddie knew he had aids, was dying, and the song was him saying goodbye! I mean, seriously? AIDS wasn’t even a thing in 1975 when it was written. ☺️Sorry, I’m up on my soapbox again. I love 💕 Freddie, he was an amazing man, and an inspiration. Rant over... 🥰

This concert was actually about 6 years before Freddie was diagnosed with AIDS - that wasn’t until 1987, after Live Aid and the subsequent 1986 Magic Tour that gave us so many iconic performances - no one knew they’d be among Freddie’s last. This is still 1981, before anyone had much of an idea about AIDS, let alone Freddie, though it’s likely he’d unknowingly contracted HIV by this time. “Save Me” is about a relationship falling apart, inspired by Brian’s friend (though Brian would later go through his own heartache and divorce, bringing us the song “Too Much Love Will Kill You”... though Brian wrote and sang it, there’s also a version where Freddie sings. Both are beautiful!)
You can start extrapolating song meaning possibly being related to Freddie’s health by the “Miracle” album, and certainly more explicitly in the “Innuendo” album (“The Show Must Go On” and “I’m Going Slightly Mad”), as well as the posthumous album “Made in Heaven”, which the band put together after Freddie’s death using recordings that had previously been unfinished or unreleased, including the last song he ever recorded and never got a chance to finish (“‘Mother Love”), which includes the line “I long for peace before I die.” It’s haunting and beautiful. Brian sang the last verse, as Freddie had said he was tired and would come back another day; he was never able to.
Remember that nothing was ever directly stated, just allusions and literal innuendos to protect Freddie. The band all lied about his health and directly denied rumors, as he was already being swarmed by paparazzi wanting to snap photos of him looking ill. Freddie didn’t announce his diagnosis until a press release the day before he died.

Brian wrote this song back in 1979 and the Game album came out then. If you did a bit of research every member of the band has written songs for every album and each one has at least one #1 hit to thier credit. Songs referencing FM’s declining health are found somewhat on the Miracle 1989, Innuendo album1991 and Made in Heaven alblum 1995 - Band put this album together after writing music around lyrics he recorded the year he died as well as some remixes. Some may say there was a bit on the Barcelona album 1988 as well. The last two albums were not foreseen due to the state of his illness, so the last two are gifts, and great gifts they turned out to be. Freddie Mercury was diagnosed in 1987, so in 1981 Freddie had no idea he was going to die because nobody even knew that Aids existed.

NANI???? Freddie got his diagnosis in 1987 and died on 1991.
And this was written in 1979 and this performance was exactly ten yrs before his death.

For a great Bryan May solo, react to Brighton Rock, best version in my opinion is the Live Killer Album version (it changed on every tour), around 12 minutes guitar and drum solo, at the begin and end a little singing from Freddie. Bryan plays a "duet" with its own echo.

Wrong, all the harmonies where done by Freddie, Roger and occasionally Brian. Otherwise it was Roger and Freddie. There's actually a few songs where the harmonies where only Freddie, for example "You take my breath away".

    Edit

I remember listening to the car radio as I was driving in the very early 1980s. There was an item on the news break about doctors trying to figure out what was causing mostly young men to have severe immune problems. It wasn't until later that they figured it out, and put the name AIDS to it. I think that the higher harmony on the chorus of Play the Game is Roger Taylor. Also, they were super attuned and aware of each other all the time on stage. You can especially see it near the end of songs when they all look at each other.

Don’t give much thought to comments which criticize your assumption that songs which Freddie sings have something to do with AIDS. Clearly you are not alone in that, even when it may be wrong. Those of us who heard those songs back when they were first released, naturally, did not relate them to a medical condition cuz we had no idea. But who knows what we would have thought with the benefit of hindsight and more info. I saw Queen in concert I the late ‘70’s, but never met any of the band members, so maybe I am being presumptuous, but I don’t think they care whether the fans/listeners understand the true meaning of each song. They just want us to be entertained, and I am forever grateful to them for that. Thanks for doing Queen reactions!! Love them!!

The message of the song is not really about him being hiv-positive. He got diagnosed with AIDS in 1987 and the song was recorded in the year 1979 so the song would not technically be about his AIDS diagnosis. But you can interpret it any way you want.

You have too forget about the HIV Freddie wasn't even officially diagnosed until 1987,and as I said they all wrote songs, and Freddie as the lead singer sang them, don't read too much into things,I don't remember anything about his illness being included at all, that's not how Freddie was,the only one where the group had a go at a former manager was Death On Two Legs, and by the way they all play more than one instrument
