    A nice video, Andrea. 👍 But let's say, this was a "rich" experience of the cottage (chata) culture of the Czech Republic - a Praguer one 😉. Firstly I'll explain you the difference between a chata and a chalupa: A chata is a housing which was built especially for the reason to spend time somewhere in the landscape. A chalupa is a former agricultural residence which had been used for living and working, but since the people changed their occupation there are used for the free time. Secondly I have to say you that further from Prague you would in a chata realize a bit other life - like the need to get up and bring water from the spring, you wouldn't walk at the road side but somewhere through forest and so on. Y'know, I live in the Moravian Karst - one of the most beautiful regions in the Czech Republic - and I would haul you over mountains and stones into a cave where the food would be done and the drinks get rare. And so on... 🙂

    Nice video.
    Personal view on Czech "chalupy"
    I am child of 90s - When I was young I spent most of my summer time on "chalupa" with one grandparents and then on second "chalupa" with second grandparents... but from my teenage years when I started to travel (and I travel a lot around whole Europe)... so thanks to that I didnt aprecitiate a "chalupa" as much as my parents and I dindt understand it... till KungFlu shut down boarders and we suppose to stay home... at that time I fell in love one more time with our "chalupa" :) - and from now I understand that it was just way how to be free during comunist time

      Exactly. Nobody could have the big house with the garden in the city so the chalupa helped them. And after this COVID mess I guess we all appreciate our chalupas much more ☺️

      I hated it when I was kid and I had to be on chata with grandparents half of summer. Nearest shop is 5km, there is just nothing, only fields, not even running water. Today I would like to have my own chata, but unfortunately chata of our grandparents is in terrible condition because they did nothing there in last 30 years and they probably sell that, that's sad. I wanted repair many things there in last 10 or 15 years, but they will not allow that, even when I pay it because "we will die soon, it's wasting of money" so it's falling now and I am not sure if I want it in such condition. I don't understand why some old people think world will end when they leave.
      But you are probably not interested in my personal problems. :-D

      @@Pidalin If its still owned by your family, you will be in much better possition by fixing your old chata, than buying a "new" one. Cost of repairs is never as high as initial purchase of chata in reasonable state. More over, its usually serviceable even with just initial repairs and it will give you roof over your head. And you can never replace the memories.
      I also had to make my way, beat the table and state that I would fix the roof on our chata.

    • @Pidalin
      @Pidalin 4 роки тому +5

      @@kibicz I agree, but I can't do anything with that. I fixed door there when I was 12, and it still works, there are really memories. :-D But when my grandma sell it, I can't do anything, I don't want to force her give it to me. But we are poor family and own something is really something for me, I was sad when my family was selling everything since 90s and we have nothing now, no money, no house, just nothing. We had more cottages, nice huge house in southern Bohemia etc...and family prefered fast money over future, I am always sad about that. If I had house, I would never sell it because it's future of me and my family, you can have small old house, but it's yours, I don't understand why they sold everything and money disapeared in few years for bullshits.

      @@Pidalin Well, time to stop the wheel.
      btw: My grand-grand father had to sell his house during the war and start to hide from Germans. When he was about to finally use the money and buy new house in Prague, it was 1953.. all the money for house were suddenly only good for one grocery shopping..

    Andrea, you went for a walk and not a hike ;) In my opinion, you have to make at least 500 meters elevation difference to call it a hike. Everything else is just a walk :)

    • @ArepasforDinner
      @ArepasforDinner  4 роки тому +2

      Agreed! And not. I lived in Florida and we would go “hiking” on flat. Since there were not mountains. The moment the terrain gets tough is hiking for me. I think the proper term is trailing. Something like that

    there is a difference between "chata" and "chalupa", but I have funny (I think, so probably not :D ) drunk memories with my friends from both of these :D but anyway, when I saw that dog, I remembered my friend's german shepherd: we got REALLY drunk at a "chalupa" and in the morning when she saw I was moving she almost licked my face off :D I know it doesn't sound funny now, but when some of my friends were afraid of her and she was trying to lick my face up to soberness... I was laughing like an idiot :D

      "Kal" in a slang means : "Enjoy yourself and party !!! " smthng like that .. But the world sounds the same only in imperative.. As the only form of speech .. Which basically commands you to do so .. in any other speech manner it would be a different form... Not from Prague so idk.. but Im Czech for sure .. in it's core it's not directory connected to drinking .. Langueage wise it means : "Sediment" .. "Kal" .. As a noun .
