Strasburg Railroad banshee whistle and a few NS Thoroughbreds. 10/3/24

- On this beautiful early Fall day, we ventured to the Strasburg Railroad to hear #89’s screaming former PRR banshee whistle. Many of the smaller PRR freight steamers had whistles like this. We get a few runbys hearing this spine tingling whistle. The “Ghost Whistle” sequence that the Strasburg Railroad has been doing for so many years was the best I’ve ever heard. The whistle echo heard reverberated widespread. Later in the day we headed over to Sinking Spring on NS and caught a couple of trains, one with a rare SD40E leading a local. We also meet an enthusiastic young man who is one of the great staff of the Strasburg Railroad. Like me, he is a horn and whistle freak 😀😀

My old stompin' ground. Thank You SO VERY MUCH showcasing The Strasburg Railroad!
I rode in the fancy parlor car, number 88 behind Decapod No. 90, two summers ago ago. The car had a snack bar serving adult beverages, and the seating was in the type of wing chairs found in a living room. When the loco does its run-around for the return trip, just rotate your chair 180 degrees.
I was there in the spring. Enjoyed the train and station surroundings. Maybe it’s because of the Jewish holiday because there are 4 or 5 times the people on October 3 than when I went.
I sure enjoyed that rare quick weekday rush hour ride through the New York City boroughs.
THAT GHOST WHISTLE IS AWESOME!
Thanks for this video. I always enjoy your posts
Wow! I can see (Hear?) why they call it a "banshee" whistle, it really sounds weird, etherial, and otherworldly. No wonder those old PRR Irish enginemen called it a banshee! It probably reminded them of something they'd just as soon would have forgotten.
I'm really impressed with #89's pulling power, eight heavyweight cars! Not too shabby!
Thanks for bringing us along!
Flying Yankee would click off at the end 🤣🤣
I’m sure he would 😂😂😂
Great camera shots & sound editing in your wonderful storytelling of both vintage railroading & local rail action. I really enjoyed it - thank you for sharing!
Great video! I enjoyed seeing you there!
I enjoyed meeting you guys. Your mom is very nice. She’s a dedicated Railfan Mom!! I have met several.
Flash Back From 2013
Ii think the Strasburg mechanics may have changed whistles during Boiler service
Nice video. Been going there since the 1960s when it first started up in its modern iteration.
I love the Strasburg Railroad. Even better when you're on the Keystone or Pennsylvanian and you get to see the steam train as you go past.
Finally got to railfan, Caltrans and see some of the F-40's before they get retired when I went to the last Oakland A's game.
The whistle on the steam locomotive was what I think of when I think of a steam train whistle.
nice to see 89 looking good
The Strasburg also runs some freight on that line and connects with NS in Paradise. I like watching those moves on the live cam they have over there.
I was the previous owner of Gabe’s SU3L. It is off of PRR/PC/CR GP35 2296. It will get used more now that he has it.
I wonder where he is using it. Maybe he put it on their switch engine
@@3985uprr He has told me the potential plans for it but I’ll let him be the one to reveal them since it’s his horn now.
6:07 imagine hearing that while your camping in the middle of a forest
My best friend lives just west of Lampeter, about 5 miles west of the Strasburg RR. Every time I come north to visit, I usually spend a bit of time at the Strasburg depot, watching the goings-on, stopping in their store and sometimes having lunch at the Casey Jones restaurant (at the Red Caboose). I think the Strasburg is the best-run tourist RR in the country, but I still wish they could build a wye in Paradise so they wouldn't have to run the locomotives backwards!
If they did that, they would run fewer trips. They would have to charge more to make the same revenue.
Upper Harrisburg line is the most traffic for the best action. Very nice you went out. M404 had NYC trailing and Four CM40-8(C40-8W) to Selkirk last night. Not sure what would do up there.
I gotta take my Filipino-American friend Carl(os, also known as Chuck) out there!
Great video!! 😀👍👌
Cool video. I’m a huge fan of steam trains. Perhaps you can visit Essex Valley Railroad.
One of these days I might
I’m surprised you have a Nissan and not a Chevy since you love GM so much! I suppose being around NYC having a smaller car it probably much more convenient
I like cars that get great gas mileage plus that car is not too small and not too big just the way I like it. I’m not an SUV low gas mileage guy.
Nice video Tim. Too bad the light didn't hold out. I caught the Conrail Heritage Unit on a train outside of Altoona, but it would have gotten there after dark. Today was similar to your experience...shot the Everett Railroad steam special, then went to the Pittsburgh Line and it was dead all afternoon.
The OPEN cars were the "Hello Dolly" cars years ago.
finally they took off the annoying 6 chime whistle.
I love that six chime whistle
Strasburg always a good time! I'm still hoping to talk you into visiting the Essex RR and Shoreline Trolley Mueseum up in Connecticut. 🙂
I’m sure they would be interesting. I haven’t been to the Essex Railroad since 1986 and I’ve never been to the shoreline trolley Museum.
The train whistle sounds like it has Asthma.
Look for the motel cats at the Red Caboose, they hang out under the porch and around.
Didn’t see them
Do you think maybe 475 will get the N&W hooter back later this year in 2024 or early 2025?
I hope they keep that 5 chimer on it. I’m not crazy about the hooter whistle.
Most of the employees there don’t like the hooter so very unlikely.
@@appalachianrails But a hooter is much better for an N&W steamer.
@@NicholasMarion-pl9bm Most of those who pay for tickets at Strasburg are the general public, not railfans. The general public prefers happy sounding whistles and wouldn’t know what type of whistle a locomotive would have had to begin with.
Will 89 be running on Saturday for the 6:15?
Not sure
2:52 what's that big thing that connects to the wheels on the loco?
The cylinder. One on each side.
@@3985uprr I think that's what it's called. What does it do?
@@christophercancel934 it helps through mechanics to turn the wheels of the locomotives. Steam moves the rods, which turns the wheels . If a cylinder goes bad, you have no movement.
5:45 They don't call if Jew York for nothing. Boy, you sound so much like Law and Order's Detective Lennie Briscoe played by Jerry Orbach. I know I've said that in the past. Anyway, another great video. Beautiful scenery.
Jerry Orbach was very New York
@@3985uprr Exactly.
Is the 611 apart of that railroad
No
retired railfan when will you come back to boston???
At some point
@@3985uprr just so you know that the MBTA Commuter rail is getting new F40s that are already here just not in service yet! they are F40PH-4C, you should research it
@@3985uprr the commuter rail is getting new F40PH-4Cs , they arent in service yet but there are a few out there waiting to be painted!

8:33 Which one of those 8 cars is a cafe car? just curious.
Henry K long and Lee E Brenner are the diner cars
Every video I've seen about Strasburg NEVER shows the other end where the loco uncouples and hooks to the other end of the train ..Something for you to do on your next video .
I have shown that on other videos in the past
Could tell me the date or title of this video as I checked your list all the way to the end [ 7 years ] and couldn't find any on Strasburg . Thanks .
@@elliotwelz9793 look under 611. I made that in 2020. I was also there in May 2023. Look under Strasburg septa birthday rail fanning.
