Worms in BANANAS debunked under the microscope!

  • So there is this cowboy microscope channel which is always, forever, always finding worms and nematodes in various food items - In one video, they find worms in freshly cut banana. Highly unlikely! Unfortunately, these videos receive quite a bit of attention and this one was no exception. It has 140M views across social media and so there are definitely people who, after watching, now believe worms live inside fresh bananas. Happy to share that this isn't true :)
With great microscope, comes great responsibility.

I don't think the stomach contains hydrochloric acid since drinking it is dangerous so if you threw up you would probably die or suffer even worse acid burning sensations when you throw up also it definitely ain't in the stomach since that stuff can dissolve stone. Stone. Much more resistant than the human flesh. So yeah. No hydrochloric acid in your stomach. But there is definitely some type of acid in there. It's just a really specific one that somehow doesn't dissolve the stomach.

Very unlikely to get worms inside a banana because of the skin. Some stuff can rarely get in through the bottom if you leave the bananas up far too long. Maybe possible if a banana gets punctured through the thick skin but unlikely to happen naturally. Outside, though, spiders and centipedes like it because banana leaves are good shelter and the sweet smell eventually attracts certain bugs.

There are insects that lay their eggs in ripe bananas. They are attracted to the ripening smell, that’s why at home we tie a bag over the banana bunch. If you leave them ripen on their own, sometimes the eggs laid hatch and the bananas are packed with 🪱 so we just let the whole bunch to rot. Waste of good food.

You do realize that commercial fruit like peaches and apples etc., that farmers spray them with a chemical that causes the larvae of flying insects that grow inside the maturing fruit, to die inside and then the decaying larvae are reabsorbed by the fruit as it keeps growing. That's how they can efficiently grow fruit without any worms inside. Home gardeners can achieve this result by covering the young, immature fruit with paper wrapping to prevent flying bugs from being able to get to the fruit, and so they can't lay eggs on them. Labor intensive, but chemical-free and organic.
Also, any larvae in fruit are generally going to be fruit fly larvae, and those really aren't anything to worry about. Gross to look at, yes. But not a health risk. It's only a health risk in places where people live in really dirty areas, where there are old trash heaps and open sewers, human and animal waste, and so on, nearby - I'm talking slums like you see in the developing world. That's because insects from there will transfer pathogens from those places, to your food.
But you do know that modern food processing plants, factories that make packaged food, flour mills etc. - that a very small amount of animal matter (including bits of dead animals and possible rodent or bug faeces) are legally allowed in manufactured products. I mean these are automated factories, huge production quantities. It's not like humans are there checking through every single bit, like every grain of wheat, or checking every single section of rhe production line all the time.
It's a miniscule amount considering, so there's no public health risk.

No "worms" (actually larvae are what you find in fruit etc., usually fruit fly larvae which are not harmful). We didn't spray them or anything, they were grown fairly organically. You have to accept a certain amount of fruit getting damaged by bugs or birds etc., if you're growing organically and not spraying with chemicals to kill everything. The fruit and veg may not look as perfect, but they'll be healthier and taste better in most cases.
