Compare the radiation bit with the same sort of scene in "The Expanse", where the radiation has horrific consequences, and even surviving it with very advanced technology still means the character has to take drugs for his whole life or get cancer.
@@doublem1354 It's the fourth book in the series; I think it's called "Cibola Burn." It's a pretty good book. Definitely would recommend. EDIT: And yes, this book is where the cancer becomes plot relevant.

Why you want to confuse people and make them attach to your Robot. Its a tool not a pet. Robot for long term science mission if its not an infiltration mission should look mechanical if only so Human would be willing to send it to mission that would be dangerous to normal human and not feel bad about doing it.

The issue I had with the show right from the start is it felt like it was trying to be Firefly with the whole "we don't wear uniforms" and "we are this guy's crew and we don't like you bleh". The trouble with that is Firefly is in a universe where space travel is common place and everyone is doing it, so a gang loyal to a captain of a ship is believable. Here, space travel was clearly reserved for the best people in their field, funded by the government, and required years of training. No way in hell it wouldn't be militant with the uniforms and the rank structure
Arrgh this was the thing that annoyed me the most. They're organising one of the most important missions in humanity's history and they employ the biggest jokers possible, who are mostly interested in getting home ASAP. So infuriating.
@@loz7438 The only way it made sense to me, was Crew A were the cannon fodder. All they have to do is get the ship from point A to point B and leave enough records on what killed them to make the real crew's (The B shift) job easier. Even that is giving this show more thought than it deserves.
I'm a pedology grad student, so I kept yelling at Bernie when he was taking the soil samples because *"THAT'S NOT HOW YOU HANDLE SAMPLES, IDIOT!"* Anyone with any understanding of lab/field protocol would know the safety procedures necessary to keep everyone safe. If you cannot follow best safety practices, *you don't take samples that could endanger everybody*. I watched maybe 4 episodes of this show before quitting because, yeah, space is cool and I was intrigued at first.
I watched the first episode of this show and thought it was so bad that I'd never watch another episode but I was still curious about just how bad it would get. UA-cam is great for first world problems like these.
The writing on this was so weird, because the background world-building stuff projects current trends in kind of a neat way (being a UA-camr and a journalist has become the same thing, nobody feels the need to comment on the existence of sexual or gender minorities, all the coastal cities are now under water)...and yet none of the stuff that matters for the actual PLOT makes any sense. Wait, did NASA/the military stop screening people for psychological stability? Wait, your sensors can't pick up a MOON that's right in front of your ship? Wait, you're going way out of your way to go to another planet to find food even though you have no idea what kind of toxins those life forms might contain? Cool. Cool.
Unfortunately, they put zero effort in showing any technological development on Earth. Like it literally looks like it is 2020 but with light speed spaceships.

I like that they can’t fly through dark matter (despite the fact that dark matter is literally invisible) because they might hit a planet, despite how unlikely that is.
Dark matter doesn't actually exist it's a theory that hasn't been proven and will not be proven because it's not real. I know this is a show and dark matter is a huge sci Fi thing, but people refer to it as if it's a real thing we have proven and can measure. It's a bandaid for equations with math that's wrong, there's a crisis in cosmology for a reason.
Yeah, I saw a couple of episodes. What put me off was how unrealistic the crew selection is. They should be humanity's best and brightest for a mission so important, but they look and act like the cast of Jersey Shore. Ridiculous.
“Sunshine” is another sci-fi movie where the crew is humanity’s best of the best. Except that the characters in that movie behave like actual human beings, totally the opposite of the cartoon characters depicted in this Netflix show.

There is an amazing take down of season one by Jay Exci. He went threw every ep of the first season and went threw how stupid it is. It's a great watch- worth it's hour length. You can even watch it in segments, each ep working well as just a segment but better as a whole.

@@waynehayes912 according to disney and netflix never disputed this as far as i ever heard the decision to cancel the shows at that point was there choice they still had the right to make shows with those characters for at least 1 or 2 more years but also luke cage season 2, jessica jones seasons 2 and 3,iron fist and defenders all performed pretty poorly iron fist especially for all the shit they got for it even before the lackluster thing premiered so it probably just wasnt worth giving the mcu any more advertising
A lot of things put me off this show. Hearing how bad it is makes me want to see it for myself but with all the details you've given, im already asking for the 8-10 hours I didn't waste watching it

After I watched this show (out of morbid curiosity after the first episode) I couldn't understand how something this awful and misguided came to be. Who greenlit this atrocity? Who were they trying to appeal to? Out of more morbid curiosity I looked up the writers on IMDB. A large percentage of them are alumni of Degrassi High and related teen dramas. That explained everything.
Teen drama in space? Love Island in space was my take on this appalling series. I guess Netflix figures that it does actually have a target demographic since they’ve renewed it for a second series. Uhh-mazing!

I watched it only for Katie Sakhoff. Huge BattleStar Galactica fan. Every episode felt like it was the same episode over and over.. Maybe would have been better each episode released one at a time. This sounds like something my ex would watch as i was half asleep groaning loudly to change it or turn it down so i could sleep cuz i dont wanna hear the stupid anymore. I also remember a review that broke down all the episodes and how stupid the show was with clips it was all in one 90 min video and i felt like i watched the whole thing with no cuts from it which makes me think every episode should only be like 10-20 mins long.

Ah I remember watching this. I watched it mainly for Katee Sackoff (I really loved Battlestar Galactica, and Longmire). All I could think of watching it, was two lines from the great movie Galaxy Quest, which is 'I see you got your shirt off' and 'Is there air?!'.

I don't think people judge in complete episodes anymore. We look for specific moments that impress us and those moments make the series. Episode 4 had that hook moment - the Zola Jesus song playing in the background as they connected the dots between the protagonist's relationship - putting the time frame together of what happened, how she had been in love with the captain, the destruction of the ship in slow motion with gorgeous cinematic quality. That was my hook moment and so I stuck with it through all the weird badness. I loved that scene so much I tried to find reactions to it, tried to upload it but of course it was blocked. If I took anything great away from this show it was intoducing me to Katee Sackhoff whose acting was brilliant the whole way through - just about the only one - but I wasn't a sci-fi TV viewer so I never knew of her and I'm very glad I found her through this show.
Trust me I do like ur content enough to listen to you talking about this or anything for hours something about your opinions and the way you explain things just really click and I enjoy it! Keep up the great work
It really beggars belief how this dross gets a second series, and yet something as tight and well-written as Firefly goes the way of the dodo. (Currently on episode 5 of Firefly, which I’m watching for perhaps the fourth time, LOL.)

God love you for sticking it out. I couldn't make it more than 15 minutes. When I saw the Real World set and characters, my mind turned the channel. This show literally exposed my telekinetic abilities...which is a better plot than anything in this piece of crap.
I tried to watch the show but when they started talking about only 20 something years old people are the only one allowed into space then the military uniform thing I turn the show off .
4:23 I agree what Zane was fairly level headed for the cast of characters. But the problem I had with this, is that if you could send ONE doctor on board a space ship that could encounter untold number of complications, you wouldn't send a young person with gender disphoria. On Earth, it's not a problem. But in this case, you want someone with as little baggage as possible. Of course no one else in the crew followed that guideline, so why should the doctor.
I actually forgot most of this show until I watched this video and was like, oh yeah, that was a thing and it was stupid. Because of this, while I forgot the context, the moment Nico said they couldn't go into light speed or whatever because "We might hit a planet!" I knew this show was written by idiots who don't understand logic.
The plot is flimsy, the characters are tired tropes, the villains are laughable. It was one of those shows where after it ended I kinda went, "wait, what happened?" I had to start the show THREE TIMES to get through it. That being said, the nervous system "yeeting" itself out of her body was terrifying, but in a trainwreck, can't look away, I'm amazed by it kind of way (I don't know how many times I rewatched that part). That, and the volcano planet, that they somehow couldn't tell was a volcano planet lol. Oh shit I forgot they took back the sterilization!
I’m late to this video by a while, but I think I can say with confidence that this show was aimed at people who were so severely nostalgic for Battlestar Gallactica that they would willingly sit through ANYTHING if it had spaceships and a sufficiently buff Katee Sackhoff.
I made it 1/2 through the season before I finally admitted I no longer care about that terrible show. Standard Netflix cookie cutter recipe with a splash if science fiction to trick you in only to make you realize you’re watching a show written so bad that it had to be written by some angsty privileged narcissist.
Exotic matter rips apart organic material at the molecular level, I wonder if there's anything else that does something like that. I kind of radiation maybe.
OH MY GAWD!!! This show is so abysmal! I love science and space and am studying Astro Engineering in college and this show drove me mad! Its so bad, and does literally everything that should never be done during spaceflight! THEY TOOK OFF THEIR HELMETS ON AN ALIEN PLANET JUST BECAUSE IT HAS OXYGEN! IF THE PLANET DOESN'T HAVE THE CORRECT PRESSURE EVERYONE WOULD EXPLODE REGARDLESS OF HOW MUCH O2 IS IN THE ATMOSPHERE!
Also, you are on an unfamiliar planet, and there is wildlife that you haven't seen before! There could be diseases you don't have cures for! I'm 13, and I have more sense then these young people who probably never went to kindergarten!
They wouldn’t explode just because of a different pressure. Have you heard of airlocks?Decompression chambers? Deep Sea Diving? At most they would get the bends but there are ways around that. Nope, that was the very least of the logical and scientific flaws in this hopeless series.

1) I didnt know this was a show. I remember watching without any stopping like it was a movie. Not sure if it's not in movie form or not. 2) I gave this "movie" a shot because of the main character. About 4 months before that my father and I watched a series she co starred in and I enjoyed her acting. 3) this movie/show was a clusterfxk, but I watched it in full. Never getting that "I'm turning this sh!t off" vibe. So I have to give it a 4/10. It definitely wasnt what I was expecting but I give Netflix credit for supplying content at the level they have been recently

I'm a pedology grad student, so I kept yelling at Bernie when he was taking the soil samples because *"THAT'S NOT HOW YOU HANDLE SAMPLES, IDIOT!"* Anyone with any understanding of lab/field protocol would know the safety procedures necessary to keep everyone safe. If you cannot follow best safety practices, *you don't take samples that could endanger everybody*.
I watched maybe 4 episodes of this show before quitting because, yeah, space is cool and I was intrigued at first.
I watched the first episode of this show and thought it was so bad that I'd never watch another episode but I was still curious about just how bad it would get. UA-cam is great for first world problems like these.
The writing on this was so weird, because the background world-building stuff projects current trends in kind of a neat way (being a UA-camr and a journalist has become the same thing, nobody feels the need to comment on the existence of sexual or gender minorities, all the coastal cities are now under water)...and yet none of the stuff that matters for the actual PLOT makes any sense.
Wait, did NASA/the military stop screening people for psychological stability? Wait, your sensors can't pick up a MOON that's right in front of your ship? Wait, you're going way out of your way to go to another planet to find food even though you have no idea what kind of toxins those life forms might contain? Cool. Cool.
Unfortunately, they put zero effort in showing any technological development on Earth. Like it literally looks like it is 2020 but with light speed spaceships.

I like that they can’t fly through dark matter (despite the fact that dark matter is literally invisible) because they might hit a planet, despite how unlikely that is.

Dark matter doesn't actually exist it's a theory that hasn't been proven and will not be proven because it's not real. I know this is a show and dark matter is a huge sci Fi thing, but people refer to it as if it's a real thing we have proven and can measure. It's a bandaid for equations with math that's wrong, there's a crisis in cosmology for a reason.
Yeah, I saw a couple of episodes. What put me off was how unrealistic the crew selection is. They should be humanity's best and brightest for a mission so important, but they look and act like the cast of Jersey Shore. Ridiculous.
“Sunshine” is another sci-fi movie where the crew is humanity’s best of the best. Except that the characters in that movie behave like actual human beings, totally the opposite of the cartoon characters depicted in this Netflix show.
There 20 somethings, bad at their jobs and complain a lot.
Creators: we need to make the characters relatable.

I've come to the conclusion that the people who wrote this show were either Boomers who hate Millennials, or literally the worst Millenials in existence.
Since this show is set in the near future, cause, sci-fi, this crew is most likely older Gen Z and not millennials, which tbf, I wouldn't put it past my generation to be this bad. So hey, it's not millennial slander, it's gen z slander :)
There is an amazing take down of season one by Jay Exci. He went threw every ep of the first season and went threw how stupid it is. It's a great watch- worth it's hour length. You can even watch it in segments, each ep working well as just a segment but better as a whole.

@@waynehayes912 according to disney and netflix never disputed this as far as i ever heard the decision to cancel the shows at that point was there choice they still had the right to make shows with those characters for at least 1 or 2 more years but also luke cage season 2, jessica jones seasons 2 and 3,iron fist and defenders all performed pretty poorly iron fist especially for all the shit they got for it even before the lackluster thing premiered so it probably just wasnt worth giving the mcu any more advertising

After I watched this show (out of morbid curiosity after the first episode) I couldn't understand how something this awful and misguided came to be. Who greenlit this atrocity? Who were they trying to appeal to? Out of more morbid curiosity I looked up the writers on IMDB. A large percentage of them are alumni of Degrassi High and related teen dramas. That explained everything.
Teen drama in space? Love Island in space was my take on this appalling series. I guess Netflix figures that it does actually have a target demographic since they’ve renewed it for a second series. Uhh-mazing!

This sounds like something my ex would watch as i was half asleep groaning loudly to change it or turn it down so i could sleep cuz i dont wanna hear the stupid anymore. I also remember a review that broke down all the episodes and how stupid the show was with clips it was all in one 90 min video and i felt like i watched the whole thing with no cuts from it which makes me think every episode should only be like 10-20 mins long.
What I’ve learned from watching your videos is that I like things that are trash. Because I agree with everything you said, but somehow it just made me want to rewatch Another Life. Why am I like this?

Ah I remember watching this. I watched it mainly for Katee Sackoff (I really loved Battlestar Galactica, and Longmire). All I could think of watching it, was two lines from the great movie Galaxy Quest, which is 'I see you got your shirt off' and 'Is there air?!'.
Signs of a true shitshow: inconsistencies aplenty between episodes; totally unrelatable characters; written by the Degrassi: The Next Generation scribe!

I don't think people judge in complete episodes anymore. We look for specific moments that impress us and those moments make the series. Episode 4 had that hook moment - the Zola Jesus song playing in the background as they connected the dots between the protagonist's relationship - putting the time frame together of what happened, how she had been in love with the captain, the destruction of the ship in slow motion with gorgeous cinematic quality. That was my hook moment and so I stuck with it through all the weird badness. I loved that scene so much I tried to find reactions to it, tried to upload it but of course it was blocked. If I took anything great away from this show it was intoducing me to Katee Sackhoff whose acting was brilliant the whole way through - just about the only one - but I wasn't a sci-fi TV viewer so I never knew of her and I'm very glad I found her through this show.
Trust me I do like ur content enough to listen to you talking about this or anything for hours something about your opinions and the way you explain things just really click and I enjoy it! Keep up the great work

4:23 I agree what Zane was fairly level headed for the cast of characters. But the problem I had with this, is that if you could send ONE doctor on board a space ship that could encounter untold number of complications, you wouldn't send a young person with gender disphoria. On Earth, it's not a problem. But in this case, you want someone with as little baggage as possible. Of course no one else in the crew followed that guideline, so why should the doctor.
I actually forgot most of this show until I watched this video and was like, oh yeah, that was a thing and it was stupid. Because of this, while I forgot the context, the moment Nico said they couldn't go into light speed or whatever because "We might hit a planet!" I knew this show was written by idiots who don't understand logic.
The plot is flimsy, the characters are tired tropes, the villains are laughable. It was one of those shows where after it ended I kinda went, "wait, what happened?" I had to start the show THREE TIMES to get through it. That being said, the nervous system "yeeting" itself out of her body was terrifying, but in a trainwreck, can't look away, I'm amazed by it kind of way (I don't know how many times I rewatched that part). That, and the volcano planet, that they somehow couldn't tell was a volcano planet lol. Oh shit I forgot they took back the sterilization!
I remember seeing parts of this show with my dad and when the nervous system ripped itself out of the dude's body it scared the hell outta me
I’m late to this video by a while, but I think I can say with confidence that this show was aimed at people who were so severely nostalgic for Battlestar Gallactica that they would willingly sit through ANYTHING if it had spaceships and a sufficiently buff Katee Sackhoff.
I made it 1/2 through the season before I finally admitted I no longer care about that terrible show. Standard Netflix cookie cutter recipe with a splash if science fiction to trick you in only to make you realize you’re watching a show written so bad that it had to be written by some angsty privileged narcissist.
Exotic matter rips apart organic material at the molecular level, I wonder if there's anything else that does something like that. I kind of radiation maybe.
OH MY GAWD!!! This show is so abysmal! I love science and space and am studying Astro Engineering in college and this show drove me mad! Its so bad, and does literally everything that should never be done during spaceflight! THEY TOOK OFF THEIR HELMETS ON AN ALIEN PLANET JUST BECAUSE IT HAS OXYGEN! IF THE PLANET DOESN'T HAVE THE CORRECT PRESSURE EVERYONE WOULD EXPLODE REGARDLESS OF HOW MUCH O2 IS IN THE ATMOSPHERE!
Also, you are on an unfamiliar planet, and there is wildlife that you haven't seen before! There could be diseases you don't have cures for! I'm 13, and I have more sense then these young people who probably never went to kindergarten!
They wouldn’t explode just because of a different pressure. Have you heard of airlocks?Decompression chambers? Deep Sea Diving? At most they would get the bends but there are ways around that. Nope, that was the very least of the logical and scientific flaws in this hopeless series.

1) I didnt know this was a show. I remember watching without any stopping like it was a movie. Not sure if it's not in movie form or not.
2) I gave this "movie" a shot because of the main character. About 4 months before that my father and I watched a series she co starred in and I enjoyed her acting.
3) this movie/show was a clusterfxk, but I watched it in full. Never getting that "I'm turning this sh!t off" vibe. So I have to give it a 4/10. It definitely wasnt what I was expecting but I give Netflix credit for supplying content at the level they have been recently
