Is there a maximum number of games that the spectrum will cope with or display on the USB drive, I have followed all the instructions on the website, there's quite a few games on the USB drive but its only displaying the numbers and part of A titles ?? can anyone help, thankyou. ( they are all from the same "games folder" I have and its not like its randomly showing titles they are all in alphabetical order, it just seems to only display a certain amount and I can't access rest)
This looks like a great replication. So many old classics. I had a spectrum as a boy and it got me into IT work which I still do today. However the colors and pixels on those old speccy games do look a bit too dated to be fun in my opinion. God only knows the effect on my eyesight. My next computer after the spectrum was the Amiga500. The games on that beast were on another level. Despite loving the spectrum back in the day, I think if I were to get a retro computer it would have to be the Amiga. Sorry speccy fans.
I'm using a "SanDisk 32GB Ultra Fit USB 3.1 Flash Drive Up to 130MB/s Read" and I wouldn't definitely NOT recommend it to anyone, got it because thought it would be definitely compatible(being sandisk brand) and for it's very sleek/small design(easier to remove than most small USB memory sticks also) But detection is very hit and miss, showed at first attempt, but of the 7 game roms I got(few different types too, not all TAP) all games are temperamental at loading, most of them don't actually load and bring you back to the home screen and the one that I did get to load, wouldn't load on the second attempt, getting stuck on the loading screen for 30 minutes(loaded after 5 - 10 minutes on first go) and now it won't even detect the USB stick it at all, I've tried changing ports. I'll see if reflashing the image onto it and then if that doesn't help, try see if a firmware update changes anything SanDisk 32GB Ultra Fit definitely NOT RECOMENDED
Thanks for sharing that info for everyone matey… Personally I had issues with San Disk cards for my camera a while ago… Transpires there are loads of fakes that flooded the market at some point aswell.
@@OGDuffy I got the compatible games loading consistently afterwards, but here's a couple of updates: I'm also using a black SNES style USB controller now to and the only problem now is: 1. The joypad is only good for navigating the main menu/carousel system, but doesn't work for "in game" play, after you've loaded a game(this isn't an issue in retro arch, maybe modmyclassic / Hakchi will add a was of modding The Spectrum for RetroArch use.. Or maybe Retro Games have fixed this in a firmware update. 2. Seems, sometimes, when using the Start button on the USB joypad(same as HOME button on the back of The Spectrum carousel/game selection main menu), it causes the system to temporarily freeze up(for 30 seconds to minutes art a time), occasionally, not all the time. 3. Seems to occasionally "crash" the system, repeatedly sometimes and can only be fixed by holding in the power button to shut the system down, and happens either when exiting a game with the USB controllers START button(same as the HOME button on the Spectrum.. sometimes it works totally fine) or also by: 4. Entering the Options menu in "Classic Mode", which is where you need to go to be able to re-map the buttons(which may help with using the joypad for "in game" play, however there doesn't seem to be an option to map the buttons to spectrum keyboard keys which would be very nice(and a good standard)), this causes the system to freeze in some circumstances(there are a couple of ways to switch over to this classic mode, and I think it might only happen when doing it the less obvious way that causes it). Same here with Sandisk MicroSD cards, but was using them for raspberry pi builds, got a batch of these and they were just a couple hundred megabytes smaller than the authentic ones and because of that very small difference, the RPI images won't burn to these Sandisk SD cards, bit of a nightmare when you consider they're masters at making replicas(quite possible it's happening in the same factory)
Does anybody else have issues with their joystick or pad working with the usb games. All works well with the carousel games, but the usb games don't seem to recognise it.
Ive orderd the spectrum off amazon, usb with 1000 of games off ebay and a competiton pro usb joystick off ebay. Im hoping the usb with 1000s of games on is easy to use
Sold me a empty stick no games, it been formatted so you can put games on it apparently, I requested a refund on eBay, and the return has been requested 👍
If you’re binging, it can’t handle more than 246 folders that contain more than 246 sub folders. I went all in and dumped the entire library but there’s a lot of dross in there, far better to pick your favourite 100 or so games
'Close but no cigar' as they say. The Spectrum really needed a mic socket to load physical games as not everyone owns a PC; it's all smart phones these days. 😢
Last year I bought an adaptor that would plug into my phone at one end, with a USB slot at the other. It works great, bought a specifcally formatted for The Spectrum USB stick on for £11.99 on ebay (which had some games on too, which I had not realised when I bought it). I then went on World of Spectrum Classic, downloaded all the games I wanted to my phone, extracted each game file on my phone and then moved to the USB stick. Works on The Spectrum great. I am not technical person, but was easy enough. So no need for a PC.
@3minutegeardemos No probs, yes definitely a way. Check, but I think for me it is a USB C male to USB female adaptor. It initially didn't work, the files were on the stick, saw them in the USB stick in The Spectrum carousel but they would not open. Went back on my phone and selected one of the files with a long press, chose the option 'extract to' and then 'current directory' and repeated for each file. I then dropped them into the USB again and all games worked this time.
That's not add new games to The Spectrum, just open them from a pendrive. It would be great to really add games to The Spectrum to de main menu, with info, pictures...
Why propose an empty disk images to write on bigger USB keys to loose space? Weird! You can allays format with FAT32 a SD card less than 32 Gb from Windows using the Windows Disk Manager (execute diskmgmt in cmd) or use tools like "USB Disk Storage Format Tool", "MiniTool Partition Wizard" or others. Things are even easier on Linux.
Do consider SUBSCRIBING... I appreciate the support 😉🍺 ➜ bit.ly/37l5aQx

Paper boy was a great conversion 😎
I have a 16g usb stick and downloaded the 8g file, when I do flash from file in balenaEtcher and select the retrogames_usbstick_8gb file, I get an error message, error opening source. I'm using a laptop with Windows 10. Any ideas round this?
@@MrH77 not sure matey?!? Maybe give the 16gb file a try? Trial and error … give it a go matey nothing to lose 😎🍺
@OGDuffy I downloaded an older version of balenaEtcher than what was on the retro website, and it worked. I now have a validated USB stick. I'm now looking forward to playing Kikstart 2, Rex, R-Tyre, Paperboy Ghouls n Ghosts, Robcop and Airborne Ranger again.
@@MrH77I have exactly the same problem. Where did you get the older version of balenaetcher from? Did that fix it?
are you having problems with .z80 files? mine doesn't recognize... do you know why?
To be honest only used the files I show on the vid. .tap seen the best for me
Hi. I put a USB floppy disk drive in the A500 mini and c64mini... but i can´t in the spectrum. its posible here? thx
Not sure matey but hopefully someone on here will know and drop an answer for you 😉
@@OGDuffy ok. if i discover something i tell you. thx ^_^
@@OGDuffy DOOOONE!!!!!! u need install the some ``blankimage´´ disk to prepare the disk with special file format ( some method like A500 mini). its works... but only load 1 file (1 face from cassete). The solution is find a ``onefile game´´ .tap to load. HURRA!!!!
Hi Duffy, hope you read this, I have mine coming tomorrow and I have followed your tutorial, cheers pal. I already have the retro games C64, actually got all the original units and games in the loft, but anyway.
I cant wait to play movie which comes with it, and I was surprised it did, because doesnt seem much love for it but I love it, but I will be defo downloading Indiana Jones and TOD, Infiltrator, Renegade, Cybernoid 2, 720 degrees. So many to mention, i also cant believe they have added Where Time Stood Still, whic for me is the best game ever on the Speccy (128).
I dont know if you have played it, but its an absolute classic game, its called ATF, it was on all platforms, I have Rasp Pii, and Ive played it on C64 Specyy and Amstrad, they even had a version on the Amiga, and its just mint.
I can spend hours on ATF on any console.
Cheers pal
@@johnworsley7717 hi matey and thanks for the great comment !!! Yep it’s amazing and so much fun revisiting the old days matey…
Don’t remember ATF but will give it a look and thanks for the recommendation matey 😎🍺
@@OGDuffy I cant believe you dont remember that game mate.

Duff mate can you check that link?
I'm suggesting Starquake - what a game!!
A popular choice that one buddy 😉🍺
@OGDuffy that's what I like to hear. I'm going to go a bit left-field and suggest Halls Of Things and The Pyramid.
ELITE ❤
What a game that was matey 😉🍺
Is there a maximum number of games that the spectrum will cope with or display on the USB drive, I have followed all the instructions on the website, there's quite a few games on the USB drive but its only displaying the numbers and part of A titles ?? can anyone help, thankyou. ( they are all from the same "games folder" I have and its not like its randomly showing titles they are all in alphabetical order, it just seems to only display a certain amount and I can't access rest)
Maximum of 255 files per folder.
@@JimWood28 ahh thankyou, that may well be my issue !!
Cheers matey and thanks for confirming that 😎🍺
Jim come through for you matey 😉🍺😎
@@OGDuffy no problem, glad I could help. Cheers all. (I tested mine and reboxed it ready for Santa delivery!!) :)
I should think you can select 16G file because a ‘16G’ memory stick is larger than 16G (2 to the power 34 is actually >17G).
Thanks for sharing the info matey 😎
Can u show me how to add Daley Thompson's Decathlon
See my comments above, this game is found in World of Spectrum Classic
As it shows in the video matey but search for the game your after matey 😉
Can we add box art
Don’t think so matey and cannot add to the carousel unfortunately
I've got lots of original games, but some don't load
Try different rom files matey 😉😎
cheers mate i am a yank so the usa has to wait for the console.
Such a shame but it’ll be worth the wait matey 😉🍺
Adding games should show in the UI with pics and description, the way the built in games are.
@@ArtistCameron in an ideal world that would be awesome but unfortunately not the case matey.
Fair enough matey 😎 Can vouch for the A500 mini its a great system aswell matey 😎🍺
Commando, Bubble Bobble, Chuckie Egg, Jetpac RX, Nebulus, Bruce Lee
Love Bruce Lee…. Gonna add that now 😎🍺
I'm using a "SanDisk 32GB Ultra Fit USB 3.1 Flash Drive Up to 130MB/s Read" and I wouldn't definitely NOT recommend it to anyone, got it because thought it would be definitely compatible(being sandisk brand) and for it's very sleek/small design(easier to remove than most small USB memory sticks also)
But detection is very hit and miss, showed at first attempt, but of the 7 game roms I got(few different types too, not all TAP) all games are temperamental at loading, most of them don't actually load and bring you back to the home screen and the one that I did get to load, wouldn't load on the second attempt, getting stuck on the loading screen for 30 minutes(loaded after 5 - 10 minutes on first go) and now it won't even detect the USB stick it at all, I've tried changing ports.
I'll see if reflashing the image onto it and then if that doesn't help, try see if a firmware update changes anything
SanDisk 32GB Ultra Fit definitely NOT RECOMENDED
Thanks for sharing that info for everyone matey… Personally I had issues with San Disk cards for my camera a while ago…
Transpires there are loads of fakes that flooded the market at some point aswell.
@@OGDuffy I got the compatible games loading consistently afterwards, but here's a couple of updates:
I'm also using a black SNES style USB controller now to and the only problem now is:
3. Seems to occasionally "crash" the system, repeatedly sometimes and can only be fixed by holding in the power button to shut the system down, and happens either when exiting a game with the USB controllers START button(same as the HOME button on the Spectrum.. sometimes it works totally fine) or also by:
During the livestream lots reported this issue but someone said you have to map the controller in the setting and then it will work 😉
@OGDuffy Weirdly, mine started working without me having to do anything special. Hey ho, I'm take that.
Ive orderd the spectrum off amazon, usb with 1000 of games off ebay and a competiton pro usb joystick off ebay. Im hoping the usb with 1000s of games on is easy to use
Should be straightforward as long as setup correctly matey 😎🍺
Sold me a empty stick no games, it been formatted so you can put games on it apparently, I requested a refund on eBay, and the return has been requested 👍
My Basic games don't work cause the spectrum don't recognize the keys
Not had any issues myself matey try different rom formats?
I wish I had seen this before I bought a 256 gig USB stick
Ouch sorry matey 🫤
If you’re binging, it can’t handle more than 246 folders that contain more than 246 sub folders. I went all in and dumped the entire library but there’s a lot of dross in there, far better to pick your favourite 100 or so games
Agreed matey pick your favs and the titles that interest you 😉 Soubd advice
Would defo add combat school and Daley Thompson
Joystick breaking games those matey 😎
@OGDuffy yep! I snapped a cheetah stick on combat school!
Kokotoni Wilf 👌

Blue max, uridium, flying shark, ikari warriors, commando, fernandez must die, bubble bobble......!
Wow some great suggestions there my friend 😎
getting one Christmas and gonna stuff my usb stick with everything
Awesome enjoy it matey 🤓😎
@@stu73ke so there is a way. Thanks for the tech help 👍
Great community here the knowledge is great 😉
64gb kingston 3.2 works .
Awesome matey thanks for sharing
The War of the Worlds. Bruce Lee
Loved Bruce Lee… one of the few games I could always complete 😉
That's not add new games to The Spectrum, just open them from a pendrive. It would be great to really add games to The Spectrum to de main menu, with info, pictures...
In an ideal world it would work on the carousel but the extra games via USB is a great addition still.
