I just read T Kingfisher’s, Nettle and Bone - I enjoyed it! Will def be reading more of her books.
Love that edition of Sherlock Holmes!
Just read The Frozen River in November, and I agree, it was wonderful!

Just had to say that I’m reading Jane Eyre for the first time, and it is wonderful! Incredible writing. Are modern writers ignorant? Modern readers are likely on a fifth grade level. You stay stupid unless you challenge yourself. Words can be so beautiful, even when describing heartbreaking conditions.

@@jansfrontporch5512 Glad you’re enjoying Jane Eyre. It is my favorite book. I don’t think modern writers are ignorant. Language is living and active - constantly adapting to meet social needs and changes. It’s still beautiful- even if different from 200 years ago. The average attention span however has definitely been affected by social media, constant over scheduling and a fear of boredom and quiet. We are definitely just as “smart” as humans have ever been able to be. We just have different priorities as a society now.
