    "I'm hearing...." (insert name of any great guitarist) You're hearing Hal-Ca. She didn't invent the those licks, but she takes them another level that the originals may not have reached. In the future, you'll be saying some young guitarist sounds like Hal- Ca. lol.

    The eastern sounding section is in D Phrygian Dominant - 1, b2, 3, 4, 5, b6, b7. It's the 5th mode of the G Harmonic Minor scale. The song is written around 3 different D based scales, D Natural Minor (with normal b5 + b2's for metal sounds) for the metal riffing parts, D Phrygian Dominant for the exotic sections and first guitar solo, and D Major for the anthemic sections, bass solo, and last guitar solos.
    It "resolves" onto the 5th of the scale (an A) for the final note, both the bass hits it down low on an A0 and guitar hits it up high on an A5. I put resolves in quotes because it's really doing the opposite of resolving, leaves you hanging on that 5th your ear wants to fall down to the root, classic rock trick to leave you wanting more!
    Really good band overall, all superb musicians and skilled song writers, I should check them out more. Not afraid to start from a simple foundation and build up which is nice. The D major sections for example are mostly based around classic chord sequences like D, A, Em, A (1, 5, m2, 5) but it's the embellishments and rhythms they build over it that make it sound like so much more than it is.

      Check out their new album Guernica. Church, Day 26 and 000 are masterpieces. Hal Ca uses effects to add piano sounds and even more confident mind-blowing shredding as well. Not the "see how fast I can play" stuff, but beautifully integrated in to the pieces. Miyu plays fretless for some of it. Mia just keeps getting better.

      pls correct me if i'm wrong, I have known this scale "D Phrygian Dominant - 1, b2, 3, 4, 5, b6, b7" as Harmonic Minor Perfect 5th Below. It seems to have the exact intervals, am I missing something?

    • @nanakakitano9724
      @nanakakitano9724 3 роки тому +1

      @@Ratchy Hi, I believe this is probably just different naming conventions between countries. Searching for "Harmonic Minor Perfect 5th Below" I see it is the exact same scale but it's a term I've never heard before. All the examples of it I could find in my cursory search seemed to be on Japanese sites so this may just be the name used for Phrygian Dominant in Japan.
      Ultimately the scale is just the 5th mode of the harmonic minor scale, the names in common use for it may vary between countries. It's called Phrygian Dominant in US/UK etc because it's just a phrygian scale with a major 3rd and building a 7th chord from the root creates a dominant chord. Harmonic Minor Perfect 5th Below is mostly pretty self-explanatory, although I'm not sure why it's "perfect 5th below" as that would make me think of Dorian #4 (4th mode of harmonic minor scale, the 4th is what you'd get if you went a perfect 5th below the root of a harmonic minor scale) but I'm sure there's some good explanation.

      @@nanakakitano9724 How kind of you! Thank you so much!!
      While I was so lazy to directly ask you without doing anything, I looked it up and found exactly what you said.
      "This name was made in Japan and will not be understandable anywhere else. Called Phrygian Dominant overseas" Wow, had no idea these musical terms may differ between countries.
      (somehow it has a cool abbreviation : HMP↓5)
      Since there are no explanation to why is it named "perfect 5th below", this would be my guess.
      "same note as Harmonic minor scale starting perfect 5th below from the root note"
      (D-C-Bb-A-G / G Harmonic Minor in this case)
      I think I got a little wise today. Thanks again, it was very informative!!

    Love the reaction and the analysis even if Mio/drums didn't get the Heretic total review (LOL)!!! These kids are amazing she is 16 here and Miyu is 17, both in High School!!!! Yeah they have given me hope as has many of the J/metal J/Rock bands that music is in good hands. I still lose my mind when I hear people complain "NO VOCALIST", are you insane...the music these kids wrote and played is the vocals if you just listen!!!! They have now been signed by the label that handles BabyMetal so I worry if they will continue with the creativity and fusion of Metal/Rock/Jazz that they are so good at. Here's hoping the suits don't saddle them with a vocalist so that they are a band that they can mass produce. Watching both of these kids gave me the same thrill I got when I saw Hendrix LIVE all those years ago...awe struck and dumbfounded and because of their ages speechless. What will these kids be like in another 5 or 10 years, I can only hope I am around to find out!!! LMAO....David went on line to check out the bass and ESP wouldn't even let him have a look....no matter you are still great even if they don't know it yet!!!!!

      They released 'Guernica' after being signed with Amuse, Inc. for a bit over a year.
      Can we stop worrying that they are going to somehow ruin the band?
      It's their most experimental release so far.
      The biggest difference is how widely it was promoted.

    • @michaelafrancis1361
      @michaelafrancis1361 3 роки тому +1

      I don't see why you should be worried about any constraints on their creativity because they are signed with Babymetal's label. Love them or hate them, you cannot deny the unique fusion and creativity behind Babymetal's music. Babymetal broke the mold when it comes to metal fusion, in defiance of every convention in the genre and against a backdrop of howling protest from conservative haters. If Amuse allowed Babymetal to fly off on such a wild creative tangent ( against their corporate judgement let it be said) then I think they'll equally allow Asterism the same creative freedom. In the final analysis, Amuse were astonished by the meteoric rise of Babymetal; a band they had no great hopes for and never in the first place gave any serious budget towards. I think, in fact, that Amuse learned something from their experience with Babymetal: sometimes a crazy idea can transform into something very special given the talent of the artists involved. This is why, I believe, they have signed Asterism and, let us be frank, this band of ultra talented youngsters can only benefit from the backing of a big label prepared to believe in them.

      @@michaelafrancis1361 Amuse, Inc. signed Asterism as of April 1st, 2020.
      In December 2020 Asterism released 'GUERNICA', their most experimental work yet.
      That seems to totally back up your opinion.

      @@michaelafrancis1361 I like your optimism and only hope your great analysis is correct. They have no singer and I worry to help get them more wide spread appeal that may become an issue. A trio are hard to push without a singer, one reason Cream (1966-68) was amazing is Clapton and Bruce were both on vocals. In any event I only hope that they get to open for some other acts in bigger venues. Again the whining on YT of no vocals clearly is the reason this talented band has so few views and subs. Now I hope they let them grow as I think any real music lover will appreciate the talent on display.

    David I have a question, since your a bassist. Now he has 7 string? Okay, now after her second solo we all hear those nice bass lines.
    If he had standard 4 or even 5 string bass, could he play those fills? Because I've heard bands where bassist gets to go ape s**t for a lack of a better word, but they had always much narrower licks on those very fast and close sounding notes he did. Just wondering. Thx for the react, sorry to see it so late. Hi to Mrs.Heretic too. NW Finnish Jaeger battalion signing out.

      The only thing more strings do, is allow you to have more range in how high you can go and how low you can go. More stings does not mean better technique, despite what some bass players might believe. I have seen high school kids playing on a 4 string play circles around so called "professional" bass players who are playing on 11 string basses.

They are super talented, 3 distinct playing styles that they somehow make work together. All if them sound great. Not that it matters but the bassist and the drummer are brothers. This is the most talented group of musicians out of Japan right now in my opinion. The bass player is other worldly. The only hole in the band’s skill set is their lack of lyrics. I don't want to take any shine off of HAL-CA, but I really really liked MIYU's bass solo, that guy's got some major chops.
    I think he used his thumb on his right hand to dampen the string and get that artificial harmonic (the one you were talking about @ 18:29).

    • @THEDavidHeretic
      @THEDavidHeretic  3 роки тому

      More than likely, or he used the outer edge of his right hand....either way would work depending on the placement on the string.

    • @nanakakitano9724
      @nanakakitano9724 3 роки тому

      @@THEDavidHeretic It was a harp harmonic on an A, you can see his right hand thumb is lightly touching the string an octave above where his left hand is fretting and he plucks the string with his finger to pop it out. Very risky as you say because his right hand thumb has to be in precisely the right location and he's out beyond the frets there so no visual guide from them (I assume he's figured out exactly where above his pickup he needs to be for that note to be confident going for it).
