      @@ThatOpalGuyit's certainly trusting. But there is value in finding people you trust to consume the lengthy press releases for you. Especially when they have expertise in that field and can hear things you don't. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't doubt sometimes. Trust but verify.

      That explanation and breakdown is also enjoyed by people like me who have an incomplete clue; I got somewhat interested in shipping while Dad was in the USN and then later in my adult years worked with retail shipping for a couple years, but there is oh so much that was and is beyond of what I knew and know.

      He doesnt necessarily need to be any of that (assuming he has really no useful background). All he needs is the right staff to work for him. But! As the Governor he has many other duties and putting this on the plate as well makes no sense from the standpoint of doing everything, so it will eventually be delegated to staff anyway.

    As someone with 30+ years experience in Maryland with the Federal Government, I can tell you this kind of command structure is put in place to prevent any single person from being held responsible when things go sideways. I've seen the progression towards this "leadership" structure for projects big and small, and it rarely works as well as a single, experienced person in charge.

    My ICS geek side is having a blast, here. Unified command? Not a fan. At some point, one person decides where the incident is headed, and everyone else marches. With multiple operations going on at once, there will always be conflict. Conflict isn't, in and of itself, bad. What is bad is unresolved, or poorly resolved conflict. I agree with the Boss. One person, one voice, one place where the ultimate responsibility resides.

    Hi Sal. I understand your passion for the unified command, and i like you have a vast fire background. Im a retired Fire Chief with 32 years experience and ive been on type 1 and type 2 national teams as well as type 3 through type 6 incidents. The issue which is blaringly obvious is it would be impossible to obtain a "Delegation of Authority " which would be mandatory if you were to have only one IC. Not going to happen in this case. Way to many political factions. Lets just hope they all continue to play nice in the sandbox together.

    Sal, a general question: You mentioned HAZMAT containers are likely stored near the bow. You said it in a way that suggested this is SOP for container ships. I was curious as to why. (Stability? Keeping it away from the crew quarters? something else?)

    • @wgowshipping
      @wgowshipping  2 місяці тому +12

      They are outside the hull in case of fire. They are forward so that they are away from the engine and propulsion machinery aft. The crew, should there be a fire can set up a water barrier to prevent spread aft. If they were in the middle, they would have to fight the fire from two sides with a crew of 22.

      @@carolynallen9016 The way government operates in super slo-mo, don't count on it taking 3-5 years. Removing debris and clean up will be the easy part. The hard part will be bridge design and construction. Everyone will be jockeying for position about what design should be used, because everyone will want to take credit for the new bridge design. Then there is the spectre of azzhole environmental groups filing lawsuits for whatever reason they can conjure up.
      Based on the way every other infrastructure project runs way behind schedule and way over budget, I'll bet it will be 7-8 years before the bridge is completed and reopened.

    Could they use large air bags and raise underwater sections to the point they could tow them out of the channel before cutting them up?

    • @toastrecon
      @toastrecon 2 місяці тому +4

      I was wondering the same thing. All of that debris "weighs" less while it's underwater. You wouldn't even have to get them above the surface - just enough to free them from the bottom and then tow them out of the way so you could "take your time" with them in a less in-demand area. I'm sure that's all easier said than done.

    • @JoshuaR.Collins
      @JoshuaR.Collins 2 місяці тому +2

      Could they tow the, sure they could, but the 4-5 feet of mud at the bottom of the river could make that hard. With that, from talking to a crane operator i know, while the Chesapeake 1000 could be reconfigured into a drag line configuration, it wouldn’t be worth it, they would bring something else in.

    • @zachmoyer1849
      @zachmoyer1849 2 місяці тому +5

      you are underestimating how much it weighs. The displacement needed to "float" the entire section at once would be equivalent to all the barges needed to carry out the pieces meaning if it takes 10 barges you need 10 barges worth of displacement to float this thing. Plus you need to rig the barges safely to do so and get them all synchronized and then find a place where you can put the section which is basically nowhere. It is done this way because it makes the most sense most of the ideas people give require huge custom rigs and for other jobs that is necessary but it is overkill for this one.

    • @toddbruhn57
      @toddbruhn57 2 місяці тому +2

      @toastrecon It does not weigh less under water. If you drop a 100lb steel weight in your swimming pool, it still weighs 100 lbs when it's on the bottom. It dosent magically only weigh 10lbs down there. It's a matter of displacement.

    • @toastrecon
      @toastrecon 2 місяці тому +2

      @@toddbruhn57 Bro, gotta learn about buoyancy. The 100lb steel weighs 100lb minus the weight of the water it displaces.
