@@burtihal Well Raul was actually a pretty good singer. He's done Two Gentlemen Of Verona. He wasn't perfect but he was certainly well cast. I haven't seen enough of Sheena's performance to really be sure though.

@@rain3743 So lucky! I've seen Mr. Cullum onstage in several roles but not in this. I wish I did. I've met him and he mentioned that this was his favorite role in a musical.
He was so wonderful in “Nine,” but seeing him in “Dracula” was beyond anything you could imagine. So talented and frankly, sexier than Frank Langella. So sad Raul Juliá is gone.
I wish I could have seen either of them, or rather both onstage in "Dracula". Raul and Frank were good friends and acted together in Noel Coward's play "Design for Living".
Saw this production in Boston in 92. Sat in the front row with my wife. It was fantastic. Sheena Easton was so beautiful and gave such a great performance.
I was at the Boston show, I was 9 and it had been my favorite Show for years. When Julia put the Quixote makeup you could see the transformation in his eyes.
This 1992 Broadway revival of Man of La Mancha is wonderful! The entire cast is superb! The beautiful singer, actress, dancer, entertainer, performer and person Sheena Easton is the best Aldonza/Dulcinea ever! Thank you for posting these wonderful clips! Sheena Easton should have gotten the Tony Award for best actress in a Broadway Musical! The entire production is superb!
Thank you for posting this! I saw this show in Chicago, and Sheena was out with 'flu that night, so it's wonderful to finally see her as Dulcinea! Mark you, her understudy was excellent as well.
What a big deal she was back then. I know this revival was considered by many to be a hot mess. It’s very intersection to see here though. Julia was a real talent and I’d give anything to go back and see him in Nine...thank you as always Spiderwoman
Yes, Raul should have won. He was punished for his occasional struggles with the extremely demanding score, but he was indispensable to the success of the original.
@@auroraspiderwoman5886 Let's not forget that he was suffering from stomach cancer back in 1992 (diagnosed in 1991), yet he still performed exceptionally well.
I had tickets to see this revival but both Raul Julia and Sheena Easton both left the production early. I was kind of bummed at first but it turned out their replacements were better. Easton was replaced by Joan Diener who originated the role both on Broadway and The West End and the first Broadway revival and she was incredible.
I heard a Bway podcast, that the successor of Raul Julia on Bway in MOLM should have been Victor Garber in 1992 , but the latter, in his own words, refused the role: O Can you imagine Victor being Don Quijote in the musical ?
I thought this production was in 1988. Thanks for setting me straight. Lots of controversy about Sheena playing Aldonza. I liked her pop music. I see in the last segment she really did not have the acting chops required to play Aldonza. Is it correct that she was replaced by Joan Diener during the rest of the run? Aldonza is one of the most difficult parts to play in musical theater in my humble opinion. The music is extremely difficult and intense acting skills are required.
@@auroraspiderwoman5886 So I saw the show the first night Joan Diener replaced Sheena Easton. Raul Julia was still in the title role. It was a magical evening. The entire cast seemed in awe of her. Her vocal and acting talents were immense and the cast applauded with the audience when she finished her first solo. Raul Julia and Tony Martinez were incredible too.
@@johnkaulfus6820 Did not recall that Raul and Joan D. performed together. Wish I'd been there to welcome her back. I saw her a couple of weeks later, with Laurence Guittard.
I agree about Sheena - terribly miscast. I saw Marilyn McCoo play Aldonza years ago, I forget where. Same thing, she was too “delicate” and “pretty” to play Aldonza. I’ve seen the show many times and no one can even come close to Joan Diener in my opinion. She was in her sixties when she subbed for Sheena Easton by the way.
What a great performance by Julia!! He really was one of a kind. Does anyone remember him in Nine? I'd LOVE to see that one again. Any chance you have footage to post of him in that show?? :-)
Oh how I loved Raul Julia. He was gone far too soon.
june 12/2020 I dedicate this day? to his memory ..
He was incredibly talented and a great philanthropist. His work will be remembered for many decades to come. RIP Raul Julia.
The playwright Dale Wasserman thought this production was terrible and that Raul could act but not sing and Sheena could sing but not act.
@@KenMcMunn-bp5xv I saw this in Los Angeles, and that is exactly what I've been saying all these years.

This was my first exposure to theatre and i wanted to be onstage
20 years later, I played Pedro and understudied Sancho Panza
I love you Raúl Juliá!!! 😍😍😍😍😍
Terrific performance by Mr Julis and floored by how well Sheena Easton performed. Sad how soon Julia died later.

Sheena Easton sounds amazing. She didn’t get enough credit for this role.

I remember seeing this play live. Raul Julia had incredible stage presence. May favorite version of The Quest(Impossible Dream)
Right after Julia died, John Cullum (Northern Exposure) did the role, and I saw him in Seattle. OMG. I WEPT. His voice was INCREDIBLE.

Poor Raul Julia. He sounds so good on Man of La Mancha, but he's struggling so hard with "the impossible dream." *Sigh*
My guess is the stomach cancer was affecting him at this point, especially when the song comes in later in the show. I could be wrong though 🤔🤷♀️
