Fast and responsive -This Carrera is the best Porsche I have ever owned, it is quick, agile and and feels completely safe on any surface. Gone is the extreme over-steer and the front end lift under acceleration, and at 0-60 in 5 seconds, the 996 is nothing to sneer at. I bought this Porsche in 2012 with 53,000 miles, it looks new, it feels new and it is very well maintained and a pleasure to polish. Much maligned by the snobs who call themselves "Porsche purists" and the IMS and RMS fear mongers, this car has proven them wrong. Not a drop of oil on the floor, no additional oil between changes and including the recent 60 K inspection service it costs only $50.00 per month in maintenance.
Reminds me of my 99 Carrera I sold in 2010 with 37,000 on the clock, I loved that car and I never should have got rid of it. I needed a winter vehicle desperately so I traded it to a friend for his new Jeep Wrangler and he added cash on top. We agreed (or so I thought) that if he were to ever resell it, it would be to me. Guess he didn't get that and he sold it for $15,000 with only 37,000 miles. Still makes me sick to the stomach.
awesome you had good luck with the IMS Engine bearing not failing, hopefully will stay healthy for you. But it doesn't erase the poor track record this car has with that bearing, anyone buying it should seriously consider it and not go in blind.
I just bought a 99 911 as a retirement present to myself. The fellow I bought it from maintained it very well and the carlooks and runs like new. He had the IMS and all hoses, belt, and trans replaced as well as having the optional hardtop,(Mine is a soft top). I love this car and do not care what the "Purists" think. I live in an area that gets very hot in the summer and driving a water cooled car with the air on when it's over 100f does not seem to bother it. The driving dynamics are wonderful,(I have the six speed) and it looks great. Get over it "Purists", these cars a great bargain and can be had in the US foraround 20k and that is a steal in used performance cars. And BTW, anyone that would want to own a 2CV has NO taste in automobiles. Right there with the Nissan Cubeand AMC Pacer and Pontiac Aztec as some of the most unattractive car's ever.
1999 had the 3.4 not 3.6 Buyers / Owners guide 1: Make sure there is paperwork to show that the IMS (Intermediate Shaft) and RMS (Rear oil seal) have been done or have it done asap once purchased. 2: Higher mileage cars are usually a safer bet 90K plus as any potential bore scoring would have happened by then or the engine isn't affected, however you may find paperwork showing a replacement engine. 3: Tyres must be N rated. 4: A cheap sub £9K can be good, don't listen to the doom and gloom of people who haven't experienced these 996's just bare in mind the points above. 5: 3.4 convertibles have a plastic rear window that can degrade whereas the 3.6 didn't suffer this. unless there is a hardtop (bonus!) 6: Tiptronic should be serviced new oil and filter every 30'000 miles. Some say 50K or 80K but definately play it safe! Engine oil should be every 7'000 miles.
Everybody that loves to own a Porsche: The 911-996 is the one to go for. And the engine noise you have: He just does not use his gas pedal ! ;-) I own one for a year now and every every minute I drive in it is a great enjoyment !!!!
Le Moulin De La Galette No problems. There was the very first generation of water cooled engines: The 3,4 litre version. It had problems with a bearing that was not dimensioned correctly. The 2nd generation water cooled engine was a 3,6 litre with a good design bearing. It simply is affordable and fantastic !
+mloaks You mean 1% came with a different bearing? No, They have a 1% failure rating at 100,000 miles. Some data shows a 4% failure rating at 80,000 miles. Just change the bearing local shops charge between $1,500 T0 $1,8OO US. As far as the sound is concern I love it., the way it is.
@@fantasticoadidas the first gen had a single row bearing with a failure rate below 1%. It was the .2 that used a dual row with a higher failure rat of roughly 9%. You have it backwards
i owned this exact car same color for 5 years i put 50k on it only had too fix a/c unit $2000 and 3 sets of back tires and that's it very reliable car handles and brakes like a race car i hated the front end looked too much like a boxster one of the reasons i sold it and the ims bearing had me a little uneasy but bang for buck one of the best used cars you can buy
This guy keeps saying the same thing over and over,,,,"its 65,000 quid and he misses the engine sound". How about discussing its steering and turn in, the chassis dynamics, the transmission and shifter, the brakes, the overall handling, the ride, the fun factor and others? Great car, lousy review.
@ 2:49 mentions the lack of engine noise! And he is pretty correct - Even the 997 Carrera S is pretty boring after a while to drive. The Cayman is much more of an enjoyable experience in my opinion. (I know it didn't exist in 1997)
the interior is ridiculous, looks like a cheap housewife Van interior. Atrocious, the outside is not much better, the only reason to buy this car is for the feel and quality, and hope the engine bearing that goes on these cars doesn't fail. Just close your eyes when you are inside of it.

Says it's a 3 litre, then later says it's a 3.6 when actually it's a 3.4...😂

its a 3.4 litre engine in the one shown not 3.6 as stated that came later

He blames the 996 for a boring road. My 996 is epic even when parked in my garage, and pure joy to drive on any road.
Please excuse the spelling and other mistakes on my post as I am entering this in the back seat of a moving car going to work.
I thought you retired
Well I thought I was also,....But my wife decided that I need to continue working to keep herin the life style that she is used to.
the 10 last seconds of the video says it all. Mind you, nowadays those 996 are relatively cheap so...
I reckon he’s lying about the airfield as it would have made great content

Hence why nobody knows who this guy is... So much more he could have said 👍
Boxster wtf, he's on the spice..
To find open roads, head to Burford.
Just bought a 2000 Carrera w/ aftermarket exhaust...sounds beefy...
20 years later the new 992 look sweeeet
992 is the ugliest largest and heaviest 911 ever.
he complains about the lack of engine sound, well he should listen to the 2024 911 version, it sound like a Prius
996 or 992? Analog car or...
oo's this geezer doing the review innit?
I love Porsche but I would rather have that Citroen 2CV I saw at 4:59. :)
Maybe that's his actual car lol
I'd have it in any other color but green, green's a big dealbreaker for me.
all about the engine noise, babeee!
*FLAT-6 OR GO HOME!*
Same as my Grandads :)
Also the same as my dad's first Porsche, except Tiptronic and '00, just like his '03 911 Turbo.
Being water cooled will double engine life
