I've just failed my first driving test. I was in wrong lane. I get confused on when to go in the right lane at times. This video is brilliant! Ive watched this video about 5 times already and will continue to watch over the next month until my retest. You have a real gift for exposing things. By watching this video I feel more confident! Thanks!!!!!
I’ve been driving for years but I find these videos great. It’s important to be reminded of rules for driving safely on road layouts I don’t often use. No roundabouts here! Also keeps me from developing bad habits! Thank you very much.
i’m so nervous doing my tests and coming up to roundabouts but i feel a little more confident watching this. it’s makes so much sense to me now just watching it here. thanks for the video it’s great!
Hello James, Your videos are really great help. I cant tell you enough how helpful they are. Very encouraging. and small points that we miss/forget we learn here as videos are jut reminding and reminding us even when we are off road. would advise others not to make the mistake I did of watching these videos just a day before my exam but should start watching, following and improve on your driving while you are learning long before you give your test. You are simply BEST !!! thank you for these videos..
Hi thanks for uploading these vids they're helping me understand roundabouts better, last week I failed my test.... But I'm not giving up wish you all the best on UA-cam.
Well I am planning to drive to a concert in the UK from Germany and this helps immensely. Your roundabouts are certainly different from ours, especially taking left hand traffic into account, but I think I get the concept now thanks to your video.
You are Fantastic, I had instructor , she was always in phone . that was the reason I failed four times, I watched this fantastic video , after three days I will have practical test, I will comment the test result.
I left a comment on one of your videos earlier I cannot find the one I commented on but I had my test today and I said your videos have helped, and yes they did as I have passed with only 4 minors I am over the moon, thanks for doing these videos they have been a great help.
Brilliant, thanks. I've learnt more in clarity in this video of yours (watching it only once so far, will watch more), than what my instructor has tried teaching me, about roundabouts whom I've had many, many lessons with and I'm still to learn to about roundabouts well with him. 👍🏽
watched many of your videos and a few others on UA-cam before my test. was really nervous but tried to remember to drive how I will drive when I pass and if I fail then I won't be ready to move on to the next stage ... I went out there super early and came home with a pass with zero minors 😊😊😊 very very helpful so I thought I would comment and let you know your videos and the time made are really helpful thank you
I failed my driving test last week as I came off the second exit of a roundabout and as I came off I accidentally drifted into the right lane, which obviously impacted traffic in the right lane. I was so gutted as lane discipline is something I have never struggled with! I have my next test soon so hopefully these videos will help.
Hi Shelly , if you need any advice about driving related things, you know where the channel is. Check out the playlists, they could help you, especially the one called, first year after passing. Safe driving
Thank you for your videos! I found videos on roundabouts very useful. You explain everything very clearly and easy to understand. Passed on first attempt!!!
Thank u, I liked the reminder about not going to the left too soon too come off roundabout like the van. I'm never quite sure when to move over and I have my test in a few weeks. I love vidros like this as my instuctor doesn't encorage questions
Thanks for the video the problem when I'm going around roundabouts is my speed i know exactly where I need to be I just slow down to early or I slow down to late My next lesson will be the 4th one so hopefully I start to get the hang of it
Some of your videos are helping me with my driving. Even though I'm learning to drive in a Automatic, I am able to implement some techniques. My first driving test is in 9 weeks and I have another 20 lessons to go for the actual test, but I mainly have issues with poor lane discipline and hesitating on roundabouts. Keep up the good job. 😊 I just hope i can improve from time to time.
Absolutely love how you point out the marker point for starting the mspsl routine on approach to the roundabout 😀 Would it be possible for you to do a video on marker points & MSPSL routine as I feel it would be really helpful for new drivers.
@@JamesTravis Brilliant! Thank you 😀 I think this would help all learners including myself to allow the time needed to correctly position etc and not turn into an octopus at the last minute.

my 4th driving test is in 2 days and I've been watching your videos like religion.. this is hopefully my last time and your videos have really made me look at it very calmly.
Learn-to-drive Travis Thank you am a bit nervous but i hope i pass, it has been snowing but it only thin layer just hope in Burgess Hill It the same, it half hr away from me. I love ya videos, really help!
hi, nice video, im struggling with right checks as i come to the give way line at the roundabout. im either looking too long or not long enough, think my instructor is getting fed up keep telling me. lol
Thanks great video- one question regarding the white van that changed lanes from right to left as he entered the roundabout. Seeing as the left lane entering the roundabout was turning left anyway, why would it be dangerous for him to go into the left lane? the only traffic is the left lane going left and you and the traffic directly behind him.....if the left lane entering the roundabout also goes straight ahead as well as turning left I'd understand that he could get hit. is it that he was in the left lane before he passed the first exit and might get hit by the traffic turning left?
It is safer to stay in the right lane to go ahead but because the white van came across to the left side, if there was a car in the left lane turning left the van would of probably took the right front wing off the car in the left lane. The car in the left lane needs space in the lane to turn. The van has his own lane in the right to go ahead. Hope that helps.
Hi Travis....amazing videos and very very helpful so thank you very much Quick question.....on roundabouts, when you are turning right and in the right hand lane, do you always have to come off in the right hand lane or should you come off in the left hand lane? what are the rules? thank you very much
+shaun massey hi, on a standard roundabout you should try to get over to the from the right towards the left side when exiting. If you are exiting onto a dual carriageway, same applies but if your left lane is blocked, come off in the right and then move to the left when it is clear.
Thank you very much for your rapid reply, by blocked I assume you mean cars that are already taking the 1st exit from ext opposite yours? Also I assume the roundabouts with lane markings are the ones where you have to stay within them and if you come off in the right lane , follow it round , maintain your speed and get across to the left as soon as you can? Thank you again
Great Vid mate. at 17.32 right hand turn... I know your meant to go back into your left lane, but what if somebody is already in that lane, and your forced to the right hand lane... do you stay in the right hand lane, or do you hold back and wait to go in if it is safe. Cheers mate
+Tayla Burgess hi, if you are forced into the right lane. I would at that point leave the left signal on and get into the left lane as soon as it's convenient.
At 16:40 where the truck was parked on the left and you had to move to the right lane. Do you have to check your right blind spot too or is it just the centre and right mirror ?
I may have done quite a few roundabouts but what catches me off guard is when i start to move on but just as i move a car pops around the corner! I don't know then if i should continue or stop. As i've already left my lane & i'm unsure if it's safe to continue. I have 3,200 miles but still roundabouts catch me off guard. :(
@@JamesTravis I did just look back at my go pro footage. Look like I got a little confused on directions, then I seen the car in front to my right go (he's in second lane). I then looked at my phone to double check directions, I then looked back up was already over giveaway & a red car just had went around the bend in right hand lane. So I slowed down to 7mph, gave him an apologie. I basically just got distracted from task at hand, there was a mini exit where cars pull into thought satinave wanted me to go that way. Satinave isn't great with like deapth of the road, everything looks very close. I just need to pay attention more & only look at directions when I am stopped not approaching roundabouts ect
If the left lane is clear then left lane. If you can see a bus in the bus stop then it could in better to anticipate and more across to the right lane then move back to the left when safe to do so.
Where i live the roundabouts are quite big, so what do i do in terms of gear change when i have come top a stop waiting for traffic. I feel like i am going too slow around the roundabout in 1st gear and if i change to 2nd gear whilst on the roundabout i usually dont manage to perform it quick enough to signal off. I'm already off of the roundabout at that time. Should i just stay in 1st?
Hoopla115 over time you will get faster at changing gear which free's up the time to do everything else. So if you are struggling in 1st then you will need to change up.
I have done lots of updates on roundabouts. Here is a short playlist of a selection to choose from ua-cam.com/play/PLhk312x91yihDIFgTVECxQvLrObx7CqV4.html
At some roundabouts confuse me because certain ones it's the left lane to go straight ahead or turning left or it can be the right lane to go straight ahead and the left lane going left only! I know normally the road markings will tell you and road signs but on some roads the markings are very poor and sometimes there are no signs! Is there and tips for this really would like some advice please, thank you.
+Indiana-Rose Parkinson hi, there are some things that can help. If on the approach to a roundabout there is no right exit then you are more likely to use the right lane to go ahead and left to go left. On the approach to a roundabout on a dual carriageway. In the left lane keep the white dividing line next to the right side of the car. If you look ahead you will see the right lane going narrow at roundabout, then it is more likely making space to open up a middle lane to go ahead. With more practice you will spot the lane on approach, keep practicing.
hello James, at a roundabout where there are three lanes and I want to take the third exit that looks like a straight ahead…would I be in the middle lane as I’m approaching?
Rachel Edwards a good question. On the approach you would need to check the lane markings( arrows and information on the ground and signs). Some roundabouts have a set pattern on approach but think of it a like a clock face. If the exit you want is before the 12 o'clock (left side), it could be either centre or left lane.
I’ve just had a few lessons but I’m starting to oversteer when it comes to turning right. Does anyone have any tips for how much to steer when turning right?
I would try it in first gear on a quiet road. I usually find that the students do struggle on the right turns. Another idea would be to go to an open car park and practice figure of 8’s
Are most cars in the UK manual transmission? That’s fairly rare in America. Probably because you have to keep stopping and starting a million times on each journey.
+Emma Howard on the driving test you are asked to follow the road ahead. So when you approach a roundabout it will be probably the 2nd exit. If it's the 3rd exit, the examiner could say follow the road a head taking the 3 rd exit. Good luck on your test
Learn-to-drive Travis thankyou for your quick reply. my d.instructor just lets yiu drive and only comments if you go wrong so most of my actual learning jas been though your videos then putting into practise on lessons. so in essence i have to thankyou. i passed with a perfect scoresheet!! words cannot express my gratitude 😊
Instructor says exit to the right if u started on right or left of you started roundabout on left... But seen lots roundabout youtube videos saying otherwise...
You always leave to the left, unless the left lane is compromised by a car in the left lane. Then you exit in the right but move into the left asap. Sometimes you cannot exit to the left because you have a white solid line, so you exit to the right.
The white van that moved into the left had no threat of being hit at all, it was a turn left and straight on road, no right turn, the van driver knew this and moved into the left straight away, noone is going to pull out on him as you give way to the right at all times and he had right of way, if he went straight on in the left hand lane then yes that would of been dangerous.
They just put one of these in the neighboring town where I live they are the most dangerous and effective and ridiculous things I have ever seen in my life
Thank you for the effort but these are standard examples. There are roundabouts which are far more complex. The BBC roundabout in Nottingham is an example.
hi I failed one of my test as examiner asked me to take third exit. as I entered the right lane and took position and turned on right signal n on approach of third exit I put on left signal so examiner failed me for that u didn't need to signal right from the start. just u needed left signal on approach of third exit. idk what's the right way. Secondly in some round abouts the second exit is kind of very straight means there is no angle so my instructor told me that exit is quite straight so u don't need to signal left. is that okay ? I am thinking on day of test if I got that roundabout n examiner asked me to take second exit which is kind of straight so should I signal left before approach or not ? Please answer me
Hi Hanna, a couple of things here. If you approach a roundabout to turn right at the 3rd exit and the 3rd exit is on the right side of roundabout as you approach, then you are correct to signal right. But if on approach the 3rd exit is ahead then no right signal. The second part of your questions was about approach to a roundabout. If you are taking the second exit, then signal left as you pass the first exit, even if you are going straight ahead.
Hi Jane, I have read your comments and it sounds like you have lots of questions. I would ask your instructor to stay on quiet 4 exit roundabouts until you are happy to move to different ones. This is what I do with my learners when first starting out on roundabouts, otherwise it starts to confuse them. If you feel you understand the basic 4 exit roundabout then you want to move to roundabouts with dual carriageways on. Then the final stage would be the spiral roundabouts. I am happy to answer more in-depth questions, via my e mail on my about page

Learn-to-drive Travis thank you very much for your help.
hello James, at a roundabout where there are three lanes and I want to take the third exit that looks like a straight ahead…would I be in the middle lane as I’m approaching?
Rachel Edwards a good question. On the approach you would need to check the lane markings( arrows and information on the ground and signs).
Some roundabouts have a set pattern on approach but think of it a like a clock face. If the exit you want is before the 12 o'clock (left side), it could be either centre or left lane.
James Travis thanks . If it's at 12 o clock would that me considered to be on the right side ?
Rachel Edwards probably centre lane, but you would have to check
I’ve just had a few lessons but I’m starting to oversteer when it comes to turning right. Does anyone have any tips for how much to steer when turning right?
Slow the car down to give you a better understanding on when to take the steering off
Yeah but even when I’ve slowed the car down in gear 2 I still manage to oversteer
Yes most are manual
I see you indicated to go left at the start when left was the only direction you could go. Is this correct?
Christopher Everson I always so if a pedestrian turns up at the last second they can see what I am up to.
hi can you please define "follow the road ahead" and "straght ahead" in reference to roundabouts for me please (test in morning )
Which lane do u exit on to when you leave to the new road
Instructor says exit to the right if u started on right or left of you started roundabout on left... But seen lots roundabout youtube videos saying otherwise...
You always leave to the left, unless the left lane is compromised by a car in the left lane. Then you exit in the right but move into the left asap.
Sometimes you cannot exit to the left because you have a white solid line, so you exit to the right.
+James Travis (Driving) a bunch of thanks.. Can't thank you enough..
They just put one of these in the neighboring town where I live they are the most dangerous and effective and ridiculous things I have ever seen in my life
Good video but I think you should do it again with a better dashcam.
The new video on roundabouts came out this week. Hope it helps it’s called entering busy roundabouts.
Hi I want to know more confusing roundabout let me see please
Kabir Noor hi, checkout my playlist on my channel "all about roundabouts " watch the one on spiral roundabouts.
Thank you for the effort but these are standard examples. There are roundabouts which are far more complex. The BBC roundabout in Nottingham is an example.
Check out my playlist on roundabouts and watch the ones on spiral roundabouts. That should help
@@JamesTravis Travis, thanks very much for your reply. Have a great day.
hi
I failed one of my test as examiner asked me to take third exit. as I entered the right lane and took position and turned on right signal n on approach of third exit I put on left signal so examiner failed me for that u didn't need to signal right from the start. just u needed left signal on approach of third exit. idk what's the right way.
+James Travis Many thanks for a quick reply.
Your videos are very helpful.
Hanna khan thank you
@@JamesTravis So how can you tell if the 3rd exit would be straight ahead, this is exactly my problem, because all of the layouts are so different
Hi I'm stagling on 2 round about rouds I'm watching your video but I can't see rouds clear I think of shades of dark or lights thanks sorry if my language
Hi, check out my playlist on my channel called all about roundabouts. This covers a lot of different ones. Hope they help.
