How dare you!? My metal straw allows me, a cyborg, assimilating to... I mean, my rainbow straws are cool. I don’t expect to change anything, except my h2o intake.
I completely agree with you that capitalism and environmentalism is NOT compatible. The best case scenario would be convert to anarcho communism, and actually start making a change. However, i do not believe that the world (at least not where i live, or the US) is ready for a full blown revolution. I think that would fail, since not a lot lf people agree on exactly what should happen, or if anything should happen (this is a bad stance, but some people believe this). Therefore i think a more gradual revolution would be better, and the first part of that is spreading the word of how shit capitalism is. Which you're doing a great job of, thank you. But since climate change is an immediate crisis, we have to work within capitalism to at least start solving it. This is going to be very hard, but i really think we have to try. This is NOT a permanent solution, and we will have to transition into ancom at some point, but for now, we need to really focus on working against climate change (mostly by attending demonstrations/rallies) and opening people's eyes for what shitty system capitalism is.
yes all of this !!! im totally with you on the whole gradual revolution thing, and i agree that more thorough education on the issue is a necessary step. honestly one of my pet peeves has always been how steadfast ppl are on the benefits of capitalism ? it genuinely makes no sense to me how ppl can justify it if they do literally any research at all
@@graveyardpansy yeah! Ppl really need to start opening their eyes to it. I feel like the reason ppl are ignorant has got two "roots": one is the fear around communism (famon, the USSR, dictatorship), which, if ppl would actually research the different branches of communism, and have a little imagination, would realize those are not the only other option. And then the second "root" is just not knowing the way capitalism is fucking all of us over. We often don't realize this bc it's just what we're used to, and a lot of times ppl will blame really obscure things for this (which ties into a lot of current racism, fx how a lot of white ppl are scared immigrants are gonna take their jobs)
i wrote a paper in my college writing class on coral bleaching and the impacts baby boomers have on the destruction of the oceans and how their power status and greed is destroying our earth and this video is honestly so good at outlining everything i wanted to say/did say/couldn’t say, but this video was honestly great so thank you
thank you SO MUCH for this video Ashton. it's important. even tho i don't eat meat, i'm not in the position where i can cut out fish and eggs completely. even tho i try to limit my plastic use, i'm sometimes unable to go without a straw. i also take part in the youth climate strike that is happening, because that's all i can fucking do as a 15 year old to make a difference, really. that's why we need to spread the word and change the governments, because we won't be able to do anything on our own. as you said, we need a change in the system, and that's what we should be fighting for.
this is such an honest, transparent, and forward collection of thoughts and facts regarding climate change. thank you for utilizing your platform to provide this information and perspective that is hardly touched upon.
I totally agree! Capitalism and environmentalism can't coexist. But capitalism is also really good at shifting the blame for systemic problems like climate change, poverty, mental health issues etc. onto the individual. Leaving the society that caused them free of fault.
i love this patches and parley. my friends and i are working towards vegan/vegetarianism. even if it doesn’t matter now but let’s be *Radical* i think big corps and capitalism have a lot of to do to help and not destroy the environment so a revolution to a socialist/anarcho-communism (even a slow change) and as a military child i have firsthand experience for the determent of the world it does. so i agree with you and even if it would talk a bit longer.
I already think fish and shellfish are gross so I guess I’ve been inadvertently helping the environment all my life. I think every little bit counts if we all come together when it comes to things like recycling but straws definitely aren’t the biggest problem in the country right now.
I sell fish and I know a lot of ways our fishing practices are harming the ocean but I did not know abandoned fishing equipment accounts for almost half of our oceans plastic. Damn. (I don't eat fish (usually chicken) due to allergies at home but still)
It would be far better to reduce the amount of uneassary plastic packaging used by shops expecially supermarkets think are often double wrapped in soft plastics
I really really hear what you're saying and I appreciated a LOT of what you said in this video. Esp the stuff about the military. That information was new to me. It is true that corporations and the government are causing climate change and that they have to be the ones to fix it. However, I think it can be counterproductive to discount the efforts of the individual entirely. Yes, one individual using re-usable grocery bags is not going to change things. Not even thousands of people using re-usable grocery bags, but it is the mindset that is important. Once people learn about sustainability and start practicing it, it often inspires them to learn more which ideally leads to learning about all of the issues you discussed in your video. This is the journey I have been on and it wouldn't have started without first learning to do the tiny simple things. I recognize that this point of view is kind of idealistic and that many people do feel satisfied with their environmentalism by simply using a metal straw or whatever, but the doom and gloom attitude often makes people feel helpless. I think that individual actions do matter if only to be a stepping stone in the process of learning what the root problems with the government and capitalism are that are contributing to climate change.
I only eat fish that my famly catches themselves for family events, and I'm trying to eat less poultry, although I do not eat red meat at all. that stuff is no good for anyone or anything
well the problem with straws is really that people try to recycle them and they ruin batches of recycling and waste the whole thing but if you’re not trying to put them in recycling it’s not a huge thing
you should make like a massive scripted video about “fake news” about climate change and talk about how we can actually help change it other than going zero waste. i’d personally rather watch someone i look up to talk about these issues and is extremely well informed than read articles with my borderline adhd short attention span.
now that's an interesting video essay topic... ive started writing a couple video essays as big projects for myself over the summer, ill add that to my list :D
I one hundred percent agree that capitalism and large companies are the main issue and the largest factor in environmental change but I also think there is nothing wrong with limiting our use of plastic as most of the time it isn't needed and can only be used once it's just such a waste of resources and money the people in charge of us give me a fucking headache I feel that it's mostly commen sense
this put me to sleep lol not saying it's bad ur voice just calms me and u used so many big words that it tired out my brain lol great job but I love you channel I usually go here when I am sad and just watch ur vids even of I already watched some already ur vids just calm me and show me that there is hope thank you and keep making videos ❤
Wow, not to mention the fact that she threw a plastic straw yet is still using a plastic cup. People avoid politics but it only makes the problem worse I feel like 👀
Top 20% income earners = 70% of emissions. 100% private carbon wealth fee and dividend = 0% for corporations, NGOs and governments = Universal basic carbon income
I related to this video SO much. This is such a huge thing for me because I can only use plastic cutlery (forks, knives, and spoons) due to sensory issues and have gotten really rude comments about it. I'm vegan, and have participated heavily in local community initiatives for environmentally friendly legislation and related environmental causes. Hell, I even try to reuse the plastic products I do use for as long as I can, even though the use of plastic consumer products like cutlery and straws contributes very minutely to pollution! For someone to make snide comments about how "it's bad for the environment" when someone participates in the inescapable web of capitalism and at the same time does nothing themselves to advocate for environmentalist causes... it's so obvious that all this person cares about is either the appearance of moral superiority or the ability to convince themselves of their own morality without taking action.
i didnt actually finish this video, bc like, how is veganism not just another act of perfomative environmentalism? ive never seen any reputable source say that veganism is significantly more environmentally conscious, its basically the same as not using plastic straws. its frustrating to listen to u talk abt how individual actions such as not using plastic straws is so miniscule that it doesnt matter bc capitalism, while also hyping up veganism as somehow inherently more environmentally friendly as if vegan products n crops are not affected by capitalism. like im not gonna watch 20 minutes of that but idk. maybe im just biased, bc the only ppl to call me slurs for hunting n fishing as an indigenous person have been vegans lol. ive had vegans tell me n other native ppl that our cultures deserve to be wiped out for having hunting n fishing be an important part of our lives, despite the fact that ive seen maybe a handful of vegans actually do anything for the environment that wasnt perfomative ghhb
there are absolutely awful vegans yeah, and that’s a lot of why i don’t engage w larger vegan communities tbh. it definitely depends on the individual what diet is more eco-conscious. indigenous sovereignty is rly important for environmentalism and honestly, hunting and fishing is absolutely better than any massive crop farms. you’re exactly right that vegan products are also products of capitalism and i’m not sure if i ignored that in this video, it was a while ago and idk what i talked abt. but i just wanted to say i agree w you and a lot of vegans are shitty!
It's a a pity, but unfortunately capitalist, billionaires etc. Probably won't change, so we're all kind of doomed. Unless people overthrow the the government or something IDK.
I, unfortunately, can't go vegan or pescatarian (sorry if I spelt it wrong) I am allergic to selfish and my body can't handle a no-meat diet I do cut out on animal products where a can however and am going to try only eating chicken and see if my body can handle it
As an european student in the USA I was very surprise of the number of people suporting the military_ thinking that it is a grest thing and how patriotic most of people were. Know I understand better why you guys are brainwashed by propaganda :'))) i'm sorry for you
I have Ehlers Danlos syndrome, a rare genetic connective tissue disorder that causes my joints to sublux and dislocate extremely easily. I have to use straws so don’t sublux my wrist.
Also I try to be as environmentally conscious as possible, I’m vegan, I avoid buying from giant corporations that are main contributors to climate change, and I try to raise awareness of why we should start a revolution :)
Honestly such a great video! I've had so many of those metal straw girls at my school get mad at me for saying banning plastics straws is ableist. Also any tips on easing your way in to a vegetarian/vegan diet? My family is very meat oriented. Like we grill a lot and meat is made with almost every meal. However I want to move away from that. It is just hard cuz i live with my parents and don't have the money to guy vegetarian or vegan friendly foods and due to sensory issues I'm a really picky eater. I really want to mive away from consuming animal products because it doesn't align with my morald it is just difficult to cut everything out like that
You can try just eating less meat. Substitute half of your steak for some carbs, use more beans that meat in chili con carne, and so on. I find that the easiest food to do this with are woks and asian food in general. Like, noodles and soups especially. Since you can just kinda throw whatever in there and it will probably work. And spices go a long way! (if you do go full vegan tho, it's pretty important to watch your protein intake, and certain vitamins and minerals, so be careful. Vegetarianism is a bit more forgiving, since you have eggs, in which you find most of all that good stuff)
I think a lot of "straw-people" genuinely don't realize they are causing harm to some people with disabilities. The problem is they aren't willing to learn or listen because all their energy goes towards a simple goal, because it's easier to ban straws and recycle than changing our entire consume-based system.
disabled people have been talking about for years how those don’t work for everybody. here’s a great chart on why. twitter.com/rollwthepunches/status/1022355150554492929?s=21
I would actually love to see a patches and parley episode on the prison system!

Thanks for using your platform to talk about this
of course ! it’s something that’s really important to me so im glad it’s resonating w some others too 💜
