    The only review on Amazon was very negitive due to the Quill threads stripping out. Have to wonder if it was being used to apply to much pressure. May purchase one of these as my Shopsmith is a very good lathe, but the quill is not as strong as a dedicated lathe with a 1" arbor. Spindle turning with the Shopsmith works great, but inside turning on small bowls mine had excessive wobble and vibration. Thanks for sharing.

    Thanks for producing, the lathe has moved up on my list. Nicely turned bowl, I turn a wood(Chechem) that produces similar stress cracks which don't always show until I am well into the project

    I've been waiting for this! Thanks for the video, the bowl came out very nice and I was happy to see how smooth and quiet the 838 is. I was a little worried for you when you speeded up the rough blank but obviously it was chucked in well. I'll be ordering my new 838 this week.

      Hi Gary, glad you found the video useful. yes, the lathe is extremely smooth and quiet, and mine is on a mobile base, not even bolted down. Although I had the blank on my serrated jaws during the vibration test, from which I haven't had a blank come loose yet, I would normally have done this with the tail stock in place for added safety, which I would highly recommend as a best practice. Best wishes on your upcoming new lathe, and if you wouldn't mind, let me know the serial number is on yours. When I purchased mine 4 months ago, I was curious about why I hadn't seen any review videos, only to discover my lathe serial number is "33"! So these are either not well known, or folks are buying its bigger brother, the G0835, which appears to be a short-bed version of the big G0800 at 24-inch swing. Cheers!

    Great video, I am very new to the wood lathe and this makes me want to do it even more! What tool did you use to make the "rope" design?

      Thanks Rick! It was a good test of the new lathe , but not quite the full test I've been hoping for - I've got to find a larger blank to get on there, or something harder, maybe one of these Ash blanks of a decent size, although that may be harder on the tools than the lathe! Cheers!

      Hi David, thanks for watching and commenting. Lathe still working great!! Just haven't had a lot of time to use it recently due to home rennovations that have thoroughly clogged up the workshop. Cheers!

    Great turn. Will decaf coffee slow the turning down?

    • @BillRockwoodWoodturning
      @BillRockwoodWoodturning  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Turner - thank you. Caffeine or bust is my motto. But at just under 30 minutes with the time lapses, I can't justify putting viewers through close to an hour of "normal time" for the more tedious sections... unless I move the content toward the ASMR audience ;) Cheers!

    Thanks for this. I'm considering the G0838 as an upgrade from my Rikon 70-220VSR. Are you still happy with the Grizzly?

      Hi David, thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, this lathe has been all I hoped and expected it to be. Hope to have the time to get back to regular projects and videos also in the not-too-distant future. Cheers!

    Golly, that is such a gorgeous wood ! And you made it so pretty Bill. Should've filled the cracks with ground pepper 🤪 -Mike

    • @BillRockwoodWoodturning
      @BillRockwoodWoodturning  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks Mike! Ground pepper! :D ...all kidding aside, I hadn't considered that previously, but its fine enough for cracks and voids and likely to take CA glue well, now you've got me thinking! I might have to try that in the future, just to see the results. Cheers!

    Hey Bill what is the quill travel on that lathe?

    • @BillRockwoodWoodturning
      @BillRockwoodWoodturning  4 роки тому

      Hi CJ, thanks for watching and commenting. Quill travel is just a little over 4.25 inches. Cheers!

    I guess you don't listen to your videos after you post them. Your audio goes away and it is hard to hear what you are talking about.

    • @BillRockwoodWoodturning
      @BillRockwoodWoodturning  2 роки тому

      Hi, thanks for watching and commenting. Appreciate the feedback. I do try to balance out the audio during editing, so parts aren't too loud or too quiet. Which of my other videos have this issue? Cheers!
