    I am back in full swing after some health issues. On the menu today, I offer a most anticipated reel, as it features some of the best aurora displays in Norway since the start of the aurora season. But that's not the full story. I had been expressing my discontentment towards the internal recording on the a7sIII, which is somehow supposed to be an upgrade from its predecessor. In all honesty, it is NOT. So, buy a now rare second-hand a7sII and go back in time or buy a 6K dollar Fx6?
    I found a better solution, which I was quite skeptical about at first: continue filming with the a7sIII using an ATOMOS Ninja V + external recorder and shoot in RAW. I was quite scared of the increased amount of noise and the incredibly heavy files shooting RAW. However, as you can see with this footage, having a good denoising in post (NeatVideo) was more than okay, and the advantages are endless: You can get full control on the odd exposure of the aurora, too often blown out in the highlights and too dark in the landscape. Thanks the huge dynamic range of the ProRes RAW footage (12 bits effective) in 4k25p, I was able to bring out colors I would never have gotten with internal shooting, even in 4K 10-bit 4:2:2...
    Colors are just so much more vibrant without any sort of over-saturation. Overall, I can but recommend adding a ninja V to your A7sIII to finally get the results expected of this 'low-light beast'. It makes it much more heavy but if you ask me now, I would never part from it again for extreme low-light filming.
    On a side note, I should mention that a few sequences are slightly sped up for denoising purposes and so slightly faster than real-time (but not that much either!). Most of the sequences are real-time.

    Beautiful footage! Yes, real-time is so much better for most Auroral displays than time-lapse. I saw a few segments that were sped up a bit (satellite speeds gave those clips away) but I was glad to see in your comments the honest explanation as to why you needed to run them a bit faster. Thanks again for a GREAT SHOW!!!

    The a7SIII is quite amazing. I've been playing with an a7SII and nighttime time lapses. Between the lack of native 10 bit and the high iso sensor glow limit quality real time low light recording quite a bit. Sped up playback and some cheats to average the 8 bit to 10 bit(ffmpeg tmix + 444 10 bit conversion) seem to be the only way to approach similar quality.

    • @NightLightsFilms
      @NightLightsFilms  Рік тому +3

      I would actually argue that the internal footage from the a7sII is superior to this of the a7sIII as the amp glow is easily dealt with in post even without cropping. The 10 bit actually doesn't give you a lot more latitude in post as the internal files are still recorded in a compressed codec (h.264 or XAVC). The NR reduction algorthm in the a7sIII defeats the whole purpose of the camera in my opinion!

    • @saccaed
      @saccaed Рік тому

      @@NightLightsFilms You would be more familiar. I don't have any direct experience with the a7SIII. Cleaning up the amp glow isn't much an issue on it's own but when graded 8 bit becomes a fairly obvious limitation(at least for star lit recordings). Without access to 422 or 444 for either camera the internal recordings are going to be limited for both. I've heard about the a7SIII NR causing headaches specifically. Wish that sony would add in a menu option(s) for end user control of the internal NR. a7SII has similar NR issues for stills. All other features aside, the full sized HDMI port on the a7SIII is such an upgrade. I'm quite afraid to use the micro HDMI on the a7SII as I know how fragile a connector it is.

    Do you always use 1/25 or 1/50 shutter speed? Unless aurora was very bright, i had to use 1/5 or so to keep aurora visible with my FX3 and Ninja V prores RAW set up and then speed up the footage by 500% to fill every frame.

    • @NightLightsFilms
      @NightLightsFilms  Рік тому +1

      Ah yes ok. Yes there are 2-3 sequences that are slightly sped up as denoising was easier on those with frame blending, that might be why they look weird and the satellites go a bit faster than usual. :) I guess I should mention that in the description! Thx for noticing!
