Absolutely masterful video. I've been looking for someone to really get into the weeds on how to capture aurora the right way, in real time, and haven't found any videos before this. I'm so impressed with your knowledge and experience and just the quality of this video. You've earned a subscriber!
Really useful information on video settings for the aurora.Thank you for this video! I have a SONY A7IV that I want to try shooting real-time aurora footage with. Can you recommend some settings I should try? I'm using a Laowa 15mm f/2 lens, it's the fastest lens I have at the moment.
Alister-Superb video !!!! I've always enjoyed your videos, especially your Sony gear/product reviews-which I've purchased based on your expert reviews/tutorial (starting with the Sony EA50 through the FS5 and FX9. etc, Would loved to have seen these awesome auroras in 8K with the Sony A1, which I bought. This video is, nonetheless, spectacular in 4K!
Fast lens, you gain a stop over an f1.4, but the FX30 camera is at least 3 stops less sensitive than an FX3, so it would still struggle for real time capture.
Hey ! very nice content 😃 I plan to shoot some aurora in Norway soon with my fx30, and after your video i think to shoot simply with the video mode or S&Q but do you think it will not too fainted for me with a 11mm f2.8 in video or 1sec shutter + 2500 iso in s&q ? Thanks for your content 👍
A lot will depend on how bright the Aurora is at the time. Some nights f2.8 and 2500 ISO would need a 1 second exposure. Another time you might be at 12 fps and 1/12th.
Alister- I can only imagine the transcendent experience one would have viewing this in person- it must be beyond awesome!
Glad to hear about this documentary in your blog!
So beautiful. Thank you!
Amazing, comprehensive lesson Alister. Thank you.

Great job, beautiful images. Question, was your Sigma 20mm you used with the speed booster a EF mount? Thanks !
Yes, metabones speedbooster
Hey, what is the badge on the right part of the jacket which seems to refer to Tromso?
It's a Northern Lights Guide badge from Tromso.
Great insight! I would love to see the denoise settings you use for both FX3 and FX30, also maybe some lens recommendations for both!
NR settings will vary greatly from shot to shot depending on frame rate, how much noise needs to be reduced etc and are adjusted as I go.

So are you not at a shutter speed of 1/50 when filming? What is your shutter speed at?
It depends on the frame rate I am shooting at, generally it will be the equivalent of a 360 degree shutter.
Thank you! Beuatifull video!! I wonder the FX 30 and ttartisan`s lens F 0.95

8:55 - why does house texture jumping? Is there a h.265 compression trouble or that's something that happend in real?
I think its an encoding artefact.

It takes a while for YT to get around to the HDR encoding.
