Keith Carlock is the master of building incredible and dynamic drum solos that keep the audience on the edge of their seats.
Watch this 10-minute performance and see if you can catch exactly where the modulation happens during the solo. By implying changes in tempo, Keith is able to use this technique to bring more feeling and surprise into his playing, which leaves the listener shifting how they groove along to the music.

Keith's style is one of my all-time favorites! He has this thick slushy heavy groove that behind it has this driving momentum that won't stop for anyone! And his groove is infectious as hell!
There’s something really nice about his overall dynamics. Kinda quiet. I really like that
Martin it’s like he’s whispering almost
It makes the listener kind of lean in more and listen a lot more carefully. It's beautiful!
It's really rare to see a drummer with so much restrain yet still freestyle and solo
Maybe bcuz he doesnt rly use cymbals that can make his drumming flashy?
Maybe you wouldn't say that if you were in the room!
To me hes up there with the Gadd and the greats. Surely on the shortlist of the most tasteful and technically proficient drummers alive today.
I had the pleasure of watching Keith shred on my kit about 10 years ago. "I havent touched one of these in years!" he said before playing 200bpm 16ths on my double bass pedal with zero warmup.
Fuck yeah.
@@karadan100I’m feeling that “fuck yeah.”
A master class in deep groove, creative phrasing, and a monster sound. This just gave me hope for a better musical drumming future,
One of the most musical players I've heard. From the first time I heard this guy (Tal Wilkenfeld's debut album) I loved his dynamics, his signature rolls, even this solo (unlike the solos of other great drummers) is a pleasure to listen to in the background. One of my favorite 5 drummers definitely.
Just wow!! His groove within the context of a solo is unbelievable, sorta like Steve Jordan. His paradiddle diddles are so smooth, his flams and footwork so dynamic. What a drummer, and a nice bloke too.
Just how this kit sounds is amazing. Jazz sound, but great for like all genres. Those flams on toms are killer flams!
One of the Brilliant Masters of Drum Kit !!!
My favourite drummer for sure! Such a deep groove but most impressed by his left foot work. I don’t see many drummers incorporating the hihat like he does.
One of my favorite drummers of all time, his rolls and fills are so smooth. Very underrated drummer imo
Keith is incredibly amazing but I don't think he's underrated it's just that he's little known to the public but all of us who are drummers or are interested in the world of drums agree that he is an exceptional drummer.
It's nice to hear that he's tightened up his bass drum sound a little more. He had very unique and great tonal "boom" for many years, but now with an Evans Emad on his batter side, his kick is much more tonally controlled and tighter, while still retaining his unmistakable signature kick sound..It's how I've always had my bass drum sound, and I've driven many a sound man crazy because of it !😅
THE BEST SOLO!!!! Fantastic! 🙂
Keith is a master ,l love that Sound of drums like 60 ,70 slingerland ,ludwig, gretsch, premier drums
Very cool storytelling for this kind of "classic" groove- based drum solo
this made my day! cant hear enough of Keith
Was funny seeing the expression on Dave’s face after he put Keith on the spot to play his solo. After he finishes Dave is incredulous. Ha! Keith is a monster. I’m sure the whole crew was mesmerized as we all were and are. Keith has covered a lot of ground.
One of my favourite drummers.
Beautiful sounding cymbals
One of the greats!
groovy and dynamic. amazing!
The Steely Dan Drum Master!! He is just incredible!! Thanks for the upload. 😊👍👍🍻
I always loved that beat at 3:52
Something else. Magnificent. Pure sound.
Amazing. Saw him with Steely Dan some time ago. He was on another level
I can add Keith Carlock to my list of all time great drummers. So impressive!! Thank you Keith!😂
wowza, only dude i've heard play like this is Dave DiCenso its an incredible evolution of technique but with so much heart and soul. Like a space age bonzo. with some trilok mixed in even. just beyond incredible. mind completely blown. brand new fan.
Saw Steely Dan in June?/July 2022 at Jones Beach Theater. Wow...what a show! And Keith's solo that night totally blew me away.
He paints... whether you see the picture or not is another story... many people didn't understand picasso... but every stroke had a purpose...a reason... Keith's application and approach is much the same... and the picture is beautiful...he is indeed the picasso of percussion... without exception 🖐🏻
Great! On every level.
Holy cow man, I need to catch my breath
I could listen to Keith play drums all day no problem
such a unique voice!
Jesus. What a gift.
He has such an aerial sound, I don't know how to explain. He has so much amplitude in its movements, we can feel it
Heavenly! Gadd like even!
He is great with Steely Dan…amazing drummer!
Wonderful
Awesome Drun Solo
goals
Thumbs up, Awesome!
Smooth man!
also love the sound of the drums
as of 1/27/202, there is 27 dislikes. I do not understand why there is any. It must be individuals who who do not even know anything, it is comical. This guy is such a MONSTER on the drums!!!!!!
Awesome
Good God I love his hat work!😳
outstanding
That's indeed an epic 10 minites drum solo
Each limb playing something different, creating one sound. He reminds of John B. What an open sound on that kit! This guy is phenomenal!
He's the drummer of Steely Dan. This speaks for itself.
Might replace Weck as my number one fave. Hard to do, but I love the way he attacks them and gets a monster sound.
Great
Hey Drumeo! Idk if you will see this, but you should get Simon Philips in!! But this is a great solo by Keith!!
A monster!
Those special dry hats are killer
What ride is that!?!?! It sounds magical!
It's definitely a Constantinople, not sure the specific specs. They're really beautiful sounding cymbals, but to be fair- Kieth could make a trash can lid sound majestic lol
What happened to Gregg Bissonette's lesson from yesterday? It deleted from my feed!
6:16 seamless
Does anyone know what are the heads Keith is using in this solo? They sound absolutely amazing!
I been playing for about 30 years and i cannot understand how people can play holding the stick that way in the left hand i mean that sounded amazing i just cant do it.
It's a matter of preference. You can sound as good with traditional grip as with matched grip.
@@nilsrosenberg1784 no doubt im just saying i cant
@@davedalessandroDalessandro Yeah I can't either, would consume too much time to switch grips as well.
Play what feels good for you.
There are a bunch of people who look at you playing drums and say that can't do what you can either. You do anything long enough and you'll get the hang of it.
Fucking LOVE Keith's playing. Don't necessarily like the artists that he has played with, but he is one of my absolute favorites. So good!
I can't hold a stick like that in my left hand either. Been playing about 60 years. 71 now. Slowed down somewhat.
Badass
he's the best storyteller on the drums
That was INSANE
Machine
Wow Keith
😍 😍
WHAOOOO I JUST DISCOVER HIM ^^ !!! WAZZZZZAAAAAAAA Keith Carlock
allo
This guy is extremely talented! But Neil Peart's drum solo in Frankfurt Germany is the greatest drum solo ever played, IMHO
Does anyone know which Evans heads Keith uses..?
I could be wrong, but I’ve probably seen every one of his solos on UA-cam countless times. Has anybody ever seen him do what he did starting at 7:27 before? I’m just like wtf. Where did that even come from?
jbeezybeats I have kept up with Keith Carlock’s playing since ‘08 and I have seen him live a handful of times. He has not done that lick at 7:27 before. But he didn’t recently do a video with Stanton Moore... so some of his new licks may be coming from that influence...
That was beyond insane. I had just emailed this video to my buddy before I saw this comment and told him to watch the same part.
I had the video on in the background while I was getting ready thinking I was in for a typical mind-blowing Keith Carlock solo and had to stop what I was doing. That was just too cool.
Omg
7:25 - 7:35 wtf?
Yes.
Vinnie Colaiuta on Drumeo please.
💓💓💓💓💓💓
Б Р А В О !!!
Are those K Constantinople? That ride sounds like a dream.
It sure is
holy shit
I had the pleasure of watching him tastefully shred about an hour ago.... Some musician...
Been a fan of keith's for years. Super solid and nuanced player. Wonder what kind of Zildjans those are? Really nice dry and dark sound.
Elvin's "Avalanche Roll" with free fall acceleration
How is it possible that Evans Mylar can sound so dramatically different than Remo? I’ve never disliked Evans heads, I’m just so used to hearing remo that Evans almost sound strange to me. They’re obviously great sounding heads. Just crazy to me how distinct they are compared to other brands; and, in my experience it’s across the whole brand. Gotta be something to do with the glue or hoops or something. It got even more distinct with the level 360 stuff.
I’m a beginner at drumming and I was wondering if I could get some tips
Practice, like a lot. Like really a f#ck ton
Play your favorite tracks and have fun! fall in love with drums
Don't rush things. Seriously. You can compensate for lack of practice but you can't compensate for bad practice, you'll have to actively fix it. I've been drumming for 9 years and still I'm trying to break my old bad habits. Take your time, you'll thank yourself later down the line
practice, have your own style and enjoy
Play along to recorded music to give you (eventually) that innate sense of even timing. ENJOY THE JOURNEY and use your ears not just your hands and feet :)
How in the world is it possible to go down through all these comments and not one mention of Neil Peart's drum solo?
Ugh! I tuned out at like 10:15!
Ok Ed’s former students : Ari Hoenig vs Keith ? ASAP ! You gotta be humble to take lessons with Ed Soph !
Neiman, you’re done.
The sexiest man I have ever seen
I think he is pretty much the same tempo until about 8:40. Then he goes nuts!
Wow he holds that left stick really far back
modern day Joe Morello
Aside from his brilliance and taste, he holds the left stick very far back. I am not sure I have seen a traditional-grip player play holding the stick like that. Regardless, amazing drummer.
Dave Weckl played that way in his earlier days with Chick Corea's Electric Band.
Steve Jordan does. Steve Smith used to.
After 2 min its over.
Traditional vs Matched........can you say "Buddy"? Just saying................
Those shells are tuned high... Great skills though.
Stick under the armpit, wouldn't be my choice, that's what your teeth are for, but he can handicap himself all he wants, it would still sound awesome.
