Is it just me or was there some kind of small, cute and fluffy eldritch creature from time to time in the video? Hmm... maybe I'm just seeing things who knows.

There are two things that stick out to me by the game.
    1. It is fantastical horror, yes. However, it has something optimistic about it as one of the xp triggers in the game is basically "helping people".
    2. It is very very similar to Blades in the Dark, which is interesting to see. It helps a lot as a touch stone to how the game is supposed to be played.

If I had to summarize Candela Obscura lore in 3 words: "Victorian SCP Foundation"

I read a lot of Stephen King. Taliesin's explanation of "thinnings" reminded me of King's "thinnies", places where travel between worlds is possible. They feature in From a Buick 8 and also in Black House, the sequel to The Talisman, to name just two.

Totally agree, and they also play a prominent role in King's Wizard and Glass.

The first episode was SO GOOD, and I can't wait to explore more of this setting, it has exactly my favourite type of horror vibes (I generally avoid horror, but I'm a sucker for this very specific flavour of it, weirdly.) It's like they just ran down a checklist of my favourite things and threw them all in. :D

The system has a Vampire vibe with the dice pool and different effects that can be taken, but doing it in obviously a different setting and tone. Happy to hear they are blunt on the unhealthy aspects and the lore even says not to do that in this system. It looks cool! Definitely want to see more of this story!

I'm sure they mean well with the stuff about avoiding harmful stereotypes but a lot of it doesn't really make sense. If you are an explorer who happens to be from another country you can't be interested in the history of Hale? How long do you have to live in a country before it becomes your culture too? The stuff about clothes is also weird because it seems to imply that foreigners aren't allowed to dress like natives. Why? Surely It will often be desirable to blend in with the local population as much as possible.
Obviously they are trying to avoid the Indiana Jones type of character who is only interested in pillaging a country's ancient treasure to put them in a foreign museum but I don't think there'd be much room for that considering it's all built around finding and recovering dangerous magik artifacts and putting them safely in a Lighthouse although that does bear some resemblance to the very thing they want to avoid.
At the very least the wording of that section needs some work. They seem to have only thought about it in terms of preventing people in Hale from imitating other cultures in an exploitative or disrespectful way and are ignoring the perspective of travelers from distant lands who might be interested in learning about Hale or recent immigrants who might want to assimilate to their new country voluntarily to a degree anyway.

I am going to be very interested in seeing what the writers do with the setting in order to differentiate it from other products that are "Forged in the Dark" (whose mechanics it appears to utilize with only the use of "gilded dice" to differentiate them).

This is an excellent introductory world-lore video--thanks a billion! (I didn't get to watch the introductory stuff yet, so just launched directly into the actual play livestream last week...it wasn't too difficult to follow, but I am glad to know all of this now!)
"OUP" is always going to be "Oxford University Press" first and foremost for me, alas...actual academic that I am! ;)
I do wish Taliesin was made more use of as Lightkeeper, apart from the trailers for the show...but then again, I'm biased, as I'm a huge Taliesin fan. I could do, at very least, with a five-minute lore deepening monologue at some point in each episode by him, but I guess we'll have to see!

    • @possumwithaswitchblade
      @possumwithaswitchblade Рік тому +6

I think they just want people to be mindful of the fact that a lot of the traditional explorer tropes are rooted in colonialism; i.e., people from one society "discovering" places and objects that already belong to another society and feeling free to pillage them because they see them as lesser. I think if you wanted to develop a character who spends their time exploring another culture it could probably be done in an appropriate way, but a lot would depend on how they approach their work and the power dynamics between the two societies.

I'm not sure I agree with the restrictions in the character creation (1:19 & 1:25), personally. They are fine as suggestions, but I think it's always best when playing a role-playing game to have a good session zero, where you discuss the tone, safety tools, and what content people are uncomfortable with and what should not be part of the game.
I completely understand why anyone might prefer to play within the boundaries laid out in the official document, but I also think a lot of people would have fun playing a more authentic experience, a game that feels more like a period piece, stereotypes and all. Perhaps you could even explore in-game how those stereotypes are harmful and rooted in ignorance. It really depends what kind of game you want to play, and what your group is comfortable with, which is why a good session zero is so important.
I also completely disagree that explorers should not delve into other cultures. Ignorance breeds close-mindedness, and we should not vilify any knowledge-seeking activity as long as it is conducted with respect and integrity. Especially in this time, where ignorance is seemingly glorified by a lot of people, and institutions of education, like schools, colleges, and libraries are being sabotaged for political gain.
Anyway, thank you for a great video, Luna!

I really enjoyed the first session and the setting. I'm glad that they approached aspects of the lore and setting with sensitivity. For me some of this good will is lost when it turns out the Candela Obscura and apparently Illuminated Worlds is over 90% Blades in the Dark reflavored. They have clarified this on Twitter and acknowledged their influences, but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth that they seem to be going forward to making this seem like their own creation instead of building up another indie publisher and applying the label "Forged in the Dark". Though different than what WotC did, this lack of transparency makes me a bit uncomfortable, especially for someone who is actively trying to create their own TTRPG and working hard to avoid just copying full cloth other games.
