I absolutely lived for the juxtaposition between how Aabria played Empress Iomene when she was talking to Oscar and when she was talking to Cordelia. How when Iomene came before Oscar, it was as a person, not as a goddess, but when Cordelia saw her, she was a goddess, not a person. The depersonalization that comes with divinity is one of my favorite themes to play with in fantasy and I love how Aabria managed to enforce and disrupt it. Iomene is lonely, Iomene deals in life and death, Iomene watches baseball and thinks it takes too long, Iomene has been the voice in Cordelia's mind and the will in her water. Iomene is just a woman. Iomene is the Ascendancy's Mother. It is somehow all true even though both people cannot exist at the same time and I. Love it.
Yes! And to take it a step farther, I love how vulnerable Iomene is until speaking with Elsie’s character where you see she’s a contained beast. We get no less than three facets of a person of the same woman all within a drop of runtime.
honestly, the fact everyone went into Tide and Bone like "Ohhhh Liam and Sam doing a grandad/grandson dynamic is gonna be so interesting" and then the fuckin knife twist of "Sam has been alive for years and keeps dying and losing his memory and the last thing to go is the son he's spent his entire life with" is soooo on brand that im surprised i didnt see it coming. Sam "Surprise, all my characters are actually really fucking sad and complicated and are emotional rogues that sneak attack your feelings" Riegal.
I'm so used to Sam being a goofball at the table all the time that this character was a guy punch from the jump. There are no limits to his or Liam's talents and I'm here for all of that.
"Hope is the economy that a GM plays with the most, and that is the thing you take away. Hope is the last thing that dies, before you do." URGGHH AABRIA PLEASE
I still remember Aabria's quote-- “See me in six months.” It was a long time since that interview, and she has become a true master and innovator in this sphere. Side note: her eye makeup game is UNMATCHED.
100% she absolutely belongs on the top tier GMing along with Matt and Brennan. 3 different styles and all three are the best of the best in different ways. I really hope Brennan GMs one now. There are others I want to see do it too but if Brennan is next then that will round out the kings and queen of GMing. Everyone else is just bonus.
she has a rules light style, she's more of a narrative first kinda GM, which gives a different from most mainstream GMs because most are DnD GMs, therefore they are rules encyclopedias
I love that, on the one hand, she uses the mechanics to tell the story where its necessary and to devidtating effect for either good or bad but she doesnt get hung up on the mechanics for simple thinfs that eoukd just slow down or ruin the immersive experience. Loke in ExU with doors. She knows doors are the bane of player existence. Shes a great balance of rule gremlin and loose play and thats more my style so i totally relate.
Aabria is so eloquent and clever. I know that she's a polarizing GM and that her style is not for everyone, but she is perfect for me and I know I would have such fun at her table. Her narrative style, her approach to player/GM interactions, her sass, it's all good. Like Matt and Brennan she instills so much delight in her players. That's the best.
After watching her enough times, I'm pretty sure that anyone who doesn't like her DM style, I probably wouldn't want to play DnD or even hang out with in real life, so that's a nice indicator.
Love the fact she called out X-men as an inspiration/touch point for the group. This felt like the Eldritch X-men in tone and character personalities/vibes. You all nailed that.
I’m truly thankful to everyone in the CR/Candela crew. Learning from this feature that Aabria feels the same way that I do about using game systems to flesh out a character and their place in the world is some personal validation I really needed. So again, thank you to all of CR/Candela and most especially thank you to Aabria! You are a true inspiration and a masterful storyteller!
This was amazing, Aabria killed it and I really loved seeing her insight on how she developed the story. If I had to rank the Chapters, I would go 1, 3 and 2
I haven't been able to get into regular CR but came across this circle on twitch by coincidence. Was immediately drawn in by Aabria's work as a GM. Truly amazing!
This was the Circle that surprised me the most -- I always adore Liam, and I enjoyed Ashly as Keg in C2, I wasn't familiar with Gina or Noshir (but considering how I didn't know Zehra either and she was STELLER in Chapter 2, I was all for seeing what they could do), and I was wondering if Sam could be genuinely serious for three straight sessions. And then this cast just KNOCKED my socks off. And as others have mentioned, we've now seen three VERY different GMs behind the screen, and I *LIKE* that. I want to see how a system works in the hands of different GMs. I had no problem with Aabria and the story she wove for this Circle. I'm very much interested in seeing how she'd fare as a PLAYER at the CO table under a different GM (I keep PRAYING that we get Liam, Taliesin, or Ivan behind the screen), because I like watching "forever GMs" as players.
This was my absolute favorite round of CO so far. The story was amazing, the players were first class and Aabryia was a stellar GM as always. This cast was the perfect storm and I want more.
I absolutely love Aabria both as a DM and player, I just love how her mind works. She's the definition of a person who understands the assignment and makes everything better for it. I can't wait to watch this! (Also, her fashion is always on point!)
This was my favorite of the three. Don't get me wrong the other two were great but Aabria and thus group was amazing...this maybe my favorite game she has GM'd
Circle of Tide and Bone is my fave so far. Wish I could see Aabria's notes. Was really hoping she would delve more on her process than so much focus on player character collaboration 😢
Every campaign Aabria GMs I feel like I’m watching a movie and have to pause every so often to process my feelings because it’s that well paced and packed with action while still being incredibly cinematic I just instantly understand her descriptions, specifically I remember her description of feeling hollowed and smaller by the moment out of anguish and loss but also his crumbling hive form.
This is the content that really sets CR and D20 apart! A completely genuine look behind the curtain and nothing more than someone and their passion. Magnificent!
I wasn’t much of a fan of Aabria’s DMing for DnD, so I went to this Circle last, but she truly thrives in the narrative setting of Candela and this was delightful :)
I love the stories you all tell. From laughter to tears. This surely took the cake and the whole festival with it for me. This was an AMAZING series of storytelling. I’m totally addicted to this horror drama style story. Y’all have set my bar high in creating my own stories with friends and family, I hope to one day make one worth sharing and animating! Thank you all for the inspiration you’ve given me!!!❤❤❤❤
remembering Sam during character development was like I wanna be a merman 😂 ...I loved how his character turned out in this season but Im honestly curious how'd taking such mythical creature like a mermaid or siren would pan out in this mystery horror themed game. there's Chance could make a very captivating character to fit in the world of Candela
I'd say just as Brennan's CR legacy/magnum opus will be Calamity, I actually think Aabria's will be Tide & Bone. I enjoyed EXU Prime, but this was just... *chef's kiss*
l'm late here, but wanted to chip in my 2 bits to say Tide and Bone is, by a mile, my favorite Candela so far. Aabria's voice drew me in, and the characters - especially Raj and Cosmo - kept me riveted. (But please add a warning to vids like this one that have SO many spoilers.)
I did not vibe with Iomene being.. I don't have the descriptive terms to put my finger on it, but I always envisioned her as a big bad and it was really interesting to see the take aabria did, but I really Hope that people watching understand the GMs angle is their own interpretation. Was a blast watching this one
If I had to pick a single GM to watch for the rest of my life it would not be Aabria. If I had to pick a single GM to listen to for the rest of my life about their gaming philosophy it would absolutely be her
Yea... I feel like the way she DMs, there is something just off. Sometimes I feel like she removes a players agency...like its 'her' story and the players just happen to be involved. It might be that she wants to spotlight these 'things' that happen over what the player does... It could have to do with how she paces herself at the table. Everyone has different styles... I guess hers isn't jiving with me.
I’m still afraid to watch this chapter because of how she was with EXU. She would over talk the players and it felt like she was continuously wedging herself into the game to keep her voice going. I’m not Hating on her. This isn’t some toxic masculinity thing, or me disliking her because she’s “Not Matt”, or whatever…. I’m simply expressing how that mini-game felt to me, with her DMing. Not that she isn’t good in her own right.
I think that is the great thing that Critical Role has done with Candela Obscura. They've shown alternatives to Matt Mercer, and to the core CR cast in general. Some, you will like, and some you won't. And that is totally valid. I had a problem with Season 2 because, while I think Spencer Stark would be a great Storyteller as a player, I had a hard time keeping track of the story as an observer. I'm a big Aabria fan, so I really enjoyed Season 3. (And yes, I know Dimension 20 has switched players and DMs around before CR did it, but that's besides the point).
@@DougCoughler It was really clear to me with how Stark told the story with explicit mentions of shots and camera zooms that he'd make a fuckin BANGER Candela Obscura TV show. How anyone can find Aabria insufferable beyond... idk, being excited about doing her job is beyond me
Well...at least your comment is mostly grammatically correct. That's surprising in a CR hater. I almost feel like you might have an actual argument, as opposed to just "she's a woman/she's black/she called for a ceasefire/she's not Matt".
@@Misfit_Kitten Yeah its none of the reasons you mentioned. Its more so just the main character vibe I get from them, it just kind of pulls me out of the enjoyment. I prefer more toned down performances and a calmer general vibe, I guess. Different strokes for different folks.
