  • In the springtime in Cincinnati, you may spot a plant with bright green, heart-shaped leaves and small yellow flowers. It might look pretty, but this ground cover is actually an invasive spring ephemeral in the US called lesser celandine, or fig buttercup. This video explains how lesser celandine spreads, how to ID it, and how to remove it from your outdoor space.

I am looking up on youtube how to propagate Lesser Celandine. I live in the UK. It grew abundantly where I used to live and I miss its bright face as one of the first flowers of spring, I like to see it keeping my snowdrops company. How sad to hear the trouble it is causing in the US. I wander if study's have been carried out to show your native wild flowers are not able to compete with it. I think your woodland floor looks beautiful, it grows here before most other flowers have come and is enjoyed. And its cover looks too extensive to remove it without going to extreme lengths. How sad to see it going into a bin bag or the thought of poisening it, when it is such a beautiful gift from Mother Earth. And such a shame to add another bin bag to landfill and more chemicals to the ground on account of its removal.
William Wordsworth so admired the Lesser Celandine which grows in abundance in his beloved Lake District, UK, that he wrote a whole poem about it, that starts:
There is a flower, the Lesser Celandine,
That, shrinks, like many more from cold and rain
And, the first moment that the sun may shine
Bright as the sun himself, 'tis out again!
It is also medicinal, and the leaves are edible, before it comes into flower.......and the tubers after it has flowered. Perhaps your could dig them up and eat them! - you could feed a town!

I bought a house last year and when late winter hit, this came up everywhere...almost half of my yard! How do I get rid of it in an area so big?

Keep pigs. They will eat all of the celandine with the corns as well.

Bummer, spotted some of this while out on a walk with the dog. Was considering it for the garden but guess I’ll skip 😅

I actually have some in my garden but I keep it in control🌼🌼🌼🌼 but yeah you're right I have been burned with putting wild stuff that's too invasive and it takes over
