    0:49 no you can't, sleeping with a “bear” doesn't happen until then final act of BG3 assuming you completed certain quests in specific ways.

      I still find it delightful and shocking how many hidden things there are in the game. It's also amazing how evil you can be. So many games act like using a swear word or shoving someone is 'evil'. BG3 goes soooo much further than that, and it's memorable for it. It feels like a world with evil Gods and their subsequent moralities and followers as agents.

      400 hours into my first play....and I have like 5 other play throughs planned lol. I feel ya. I think my other runs will go faster, I'm just too particular about everything in this run. Doesn't help that I'm a Rogue and steal everything I can, that eats up time. But ya, there is just SO MUCH to do in this game.

    I've chalked up over a thousand hours in this damned game (completed it once as a good Tav and once as redeemed Dark Urge) and still seen only a fraction of the storylines, because the amount of content is astounding - iirc, the total amount of cutscenes and animated dialogue is twice the entire run of Game of Thrones.
    BTW, much as I adore Astarion's story (his romance with the Dark Urge character is amazing), ironically it has no links to the main plot whatsoever. Lae'zel and Shadowheart are both closely involved to the githyanki/mindflayer conflict, Wyll and Karlach have ties with major NPCs connected to the plot, and Gale is given a mission from his goddess to destroy the Big Bad, but Astarion is only out for revenge against his reclusive master and has no more prior knowledge of your enemies than your own Tav.
    Maybe that's why his story is so compelling, though - the writers didn't have to shoehorn him into the simplistic quest to stop the final bosses, so they were free to do absolutely anything they wanted with him.

      @noknowledgejustvibes  6 днів тому +3

      Great points! Guess I’ve never thought of Astarion’s story like that - I think I always considered the deal he makes with Raphael to be a bigger plot point than it actually is

    Notice that after one of the patches, Minthara can be recruited even if you side with the Thieflings and the Druids. All you need to do is be careful NOT to kill her in the fight; simply knock her down and you will be able to recruit her in act 2.

    • @noknowledgejustvibes
      @noknowledgejustvibes  6 днів тому +4

    • @Imman1s
      @Imman1s 6 днів тому +2

      @@noknowledgejustvibes No, originally you could only recruit her in an evil playthrough by siding with the goblins, since there wasn't that much content for them. But Larian kept adding stuff and at some point decided to make her recruitable for good playthroughs as well.
      Incidentally, since the last patch you can also permanently recruit Alfira in Dark Urge playthroughs.

    Thanks for pointing out Lae'zel. I made a DnD Gith character before this game came out and loved their lore, so I knew I would love this character. However, I was not expected how complex and well written she would be. I was a bit mad how at launch I heard how disliked she was by the community, but then it took a turn when people got to see her full story.

    • @noknowledgejustvibes
      @noknowledgejustvibes  4 дні тому +2

      It was a delicate balance as I’m sure for a lot of people, BG3 was their first experience with DnD lore/Gith. I thought Larian did a great job not only with Lae’zel but really diving into the functions and culture of the Gith in a relatively small amount of time. Her character arc is probably my personal favourite

    12:00 Yeah I'm on my first playthrough and I'm not really interacting with Lae'zel at all. She's too impulsive, she's mean to everyone, and has been far too cruel for my liking. Before I saved and quit my last session I had just gotten to the Creshe full of githyaki and she actually did a decent job sticking up for us and resolving the situation without bloodshed so I'm hoping this is where her character begins to improve.
    But everyone else has been great so far. Shadowheart has all but stolen my heart at this point (pun intended 😁), Karlach is the coolest chick ever, Gale has surprised me with how much depth there actually is to him. Even Astarian, someone I originally thought would just be the typical asshole character that for some reason will become a fan favorite has instead become a truly tragic character and I fully intend to help him however I can.

    The worst part of the game is coming to the end of Act 3. The characters were so dynamic and interactive up until the completion of their quest lines that they felt like real people, then suddenly they’re locked into just a few dialogue options and they feel like NPCs. This isn’t to knock the game at all; on the contrary. It’s to just point out that the characters are so well written and acted that it’s so painful when the insurmountable limitations of the game (size and plot) mean that we can hang out with them forever.

We go there and guy says I dont have the answer go there, we go there woman says I dont have the cure go there and felt like this loop would never end. Act 2 and 3 are definitely stronger - but they wouldn’t be as strong without the foundation Act 1 creates - and subsequent playthroughs really emphasize how Larian were trying to lay the groundworks for the late game.

      Imo it's the variety of good/evil choices you can make that capture people's interests. It's a pretty simple story, but it's the way you roleplay and resolve different characters problems that makes different players games very unique. A singleshot playthrough doesn't really hold up against a very well crafted story, but it's not designed it, it's designed for maximising the impact of player choice on the world and characters.

    • @annelyle5474
      @annelyle5474 6 днів тому +3

      I agree that the main story is very simple and in Act 1 can get a bit frustrating (not to mention that the game tries to instill a sense of desperate urgency that fizzles out when you realise you're not about to turn into a mindflayer any time soon), but imo the meat of the game is in the companions' stories, not the overall quest. That's certainly what I play it for - the "search for a cure" segment is this game's equivalent of grind, and you just have to push through it to get to the more interesting stuff.
      I feel like Act 1 suffered from being in early access a bit too long, with the result that they stretched it out longer than it really needed to be. Then you get a very compact, almost linear Act 2, followed by a sprawling Act 3 that clearly expanded waaay beyond project scope, since they had to cut out the Upper City entirely. I hope Larian have taken onboard the feedback on BG3 and learned how to pace their stories a bit better, but Sven has already admitted that their new game is going to be a lot bigger than originally planned 😂

    Nah bg3 writing is nothing noteworthy, its just held up by couple of Great examples of characterisation, that themselfs have talented voice actors to bring them to live. Bg3s writing ceirtainly has lead to no revival of story in rpgs and its greatest stregth is whitout a doubt gameplay, whit its abilities having complex interactions, world interactions, multilayered maps and smart enogh enemies to take advantage of previous systems and designs, to crown it all up is co op whit friends leading to insane experiences. As for bg3s sucess id say it was because good word of mouth from dos2, that got amplified by long awaited searies revival.

      I totally get your perspective and you make a good point about the gameplay - the depth of its mechanics and world interactions definitely deserve recognition. And you're right; Larian's reputation from DOS2 and the anticipation for the BG series revival were big factors in the game's success.
      I still would say the writing plays a significant role too, especially in how it immerses players in the world. While it may not be groundbreaking in every aspect, the nuanced character arcs, the weight of player choices, and the way the story integrates with gameplay create a really cohesive experience. It’s less about individual moments of genius and more about how all the parts-characters, voice acting, and writing structure-work together to make you feel like your actions genuinely matter.

      @hackbod 3 дні тому

      @@ns7495 "writing is bigger part narative and to lesser extent charactererisations" -- I mean, this is just generally not true. Maybe that is your preference, but generally characters are a core part of writing, and very often they central point of writing. Without characterization, you have a series of events: X happened, and then Y happened and then Z. Characterization is what creates the motivation behind the events, why you care about the events (due to how they impact the characters that are written well so that you care), where tragedy comes from, where celebration comes from.
      So if you want to simplify BG3's story to the main plot and a series of events, you can do that but you are missing the point. There are significant themes behind the writing of the game, which tie together even things that superficially are separate plots -- an obvious one being the themes around self and bodily autonomy that drives both the main story as well as Astarion's story.
