Now we know 2 things about Mary: 1. She's not wild about her husband's music BUT 2. At least he's not a psychopathic killer. 😅
"At least he's not a psychopathic killer"
As far as she knows . . . . :-)
Hey Marijke, "Reservoir Dogs" was supposed to be an Indie post-college type film so Tarantino could show people he could direct. ------- However, when Harvey Keitel read the script he immediately poured money into the project and got top-notch actors to sign on. --------- Secured 1.5 million for prosuction and editing, as well as a distribution deal for Tarantino. ------- Suddenly Tarantino was the hottest young director in Hollywood. ------- Making a movie ten times better quality than his peers for one-tenth the money. ----- Sending Tarantino into legendary status.
You left out the most important part and that's that Tarantino completely ripped off the 1987 Hong Kong crime thriller "City On Fire" directed by Ringo Lam which starred Chow Yun Fat and Danny Lee to make Reservoir Dogs. Tarantino stole the entire plot from "City On Fire" and based most of the events in Reservoir Dogs around the last 1/3 of "City On Fire."
@@NomadFlow Wow!
@@NomadFlow Yeah, because the movie was supposed to showcase Tarantino's directing skills, not his writing skills. On top of that, "City On Fire" was garbage, and this movie is actually good.
@@TennSeven "On top of that, "City On Fire" was garbage"
No, it was great movie actually. That's why Tarantino ripped it off. People like you just can't accept that your precious Tarantino is nowhere near as good as you think he is. He is a thief.
@@NomadFlow Tarantino admitted that he was "Inspired" by a bunch of other films when making Reservior Dogs, including among them City on Fire and some early Stanley Kubrick film. The naming the people after colors was taking from the Movie The Taking of Pelham 123. The torture scene of the cop in a chair was taken from some Italian spaghetti western.
Before Pulp Fiction was released, the story that was out there, was:
Mr. Pink survived (you can hear him surrendering in the background), but did NOT have the diamonds on his person - they were still where he hid them.
That, and the fact that John Travolta's character & Michael Madson's character are supposed to be brothers - and the opening scenes with Travolta and Jackson, it was originally thought that pulp Fiction was a sequel. It ended up not being a sequel per se, but a follow-up.
Wasn't sure if this would be too much for you Mary, so glad you loved it. Such a classic
Hey Marijke, I love how this movie could have been a play. ----- It mostly takes place in a single room and it's really 90% conversation between 2 or 3 characters. ------ It puts the dialogue at the Forefront and the dialogue is Simply Amazing. Kudos to Mr Tarantino. The stuff of legends.
My favorite part is that it's has a lot in common with cop movies from the 70's. Pacing, dialogue, use of music. But, it's definitely got a modern twist.
I saw it as a play. It was in a small theater in Chicago. The gun fire was so damn loud. The theater probably held 200 people.
@@mudball35what an amazing experience. Love to hear that.
This is my favourite Tarantino movie! I hope you enjoyed it!
Absolutely mine too. I'm shocked by how few reactors actually go watch this one.
Same here - as a tie with Pulp Fiction and True Romance (as a writer). Tarantino didn't have a single bad movie IMO, but his earlier works are just that bit better. He always took inspiration from the many movies he loved, but his early work was more original. He toke inspirations, but made something new and unique out of it. The script writing, the dialogues (esp. the random topics stuff, that gives the characters so much depth and believability), the way how he tells the story with the flashbacks and the "out of order"-editing. IMO he lost some of that "magic" after Kill Bill. Kill Bill was the ultimate node to several movie genres, mixed in a wild "medley". After that, it became more of a "remake in Tarantino style" thing.
Coud have said it better myself. :)@@mrtveye6682
By casting Lawrence Tierney, Tarantino began a wonderful blast-from-the-past tradition in his films that I love.
Two carry throughs to other films are: 1) Vic Vega (the crazy torturer) is supposed to be the brother of Vincent Vega -- in Pulp Fiction. 2) The parole officer mentioned "Scagneti" is seen in a film written by Tarantino: Natural Born Killers (played by Tom Sizemore).
I can never hear Stuck in the Middle With You without thinking of this movie.
This movie was cutting edge 30 years ago. It was a breath of fresh air compared to the films of that era. Soon afterwards several other movies tried to follow in that story telling vein.
Regarding directors showing up as actors in their own films John Favreau is another indie film guy that was comfortable on both sides of the camera.
& Kevin Smith
Mr. Pink dies shortly after walking outside. You can hear police yelling and gunshots right after he closes the door, before the others walk in -- Mary probably didn't hear because she was talking at the time
Mary knows her seventies music.
Actually, Mary, although I hate to be the bearer of bad news, Mr. Pink didn't survive the movie. After he leaves the warehouse, we can hear several gunshots and shouting, suggesting that he was gunned down by the cops. That said, this was a great reaction to a great film!
It could have also been the cruisers ramming into his car.
Stuck in the Middle with You is just a song by Scottish band Stealers Wheel, and is much older than all the shows and films that have used it. It's from 1973. It has a music video -- surprising for 1973 -- that is on youtube.
What an amazing cast and what a great movie. For me this one and Pulp Fiction go together perfectly I can't watch one without thinking of the other one. And of course -it goes without saying- I loved your reaction too...
Mr Pink is the best character, he is the only professional through and through, he acted right he was not a psycho, he went there for a job and he was the only one who did it so he had the good ending, he got his life.
And i also happen to agree with all his ideologies, including tipping, i think i would be friends with him if he was real.
Tarantino's hateful 8 is another amazing who done it.
15:50 - That's Chris Penn. He was Sean Penn's brother, and was in Footloose.
A bit of movie for shadowing: in the bathroom scene you can see the pink and white bottles (Mr. Pink n Mr. White) are visually separated from the orange ones. Of course Mr. Orange was the "rat".
I remember that this came out at around the same time as another violent film. This was called “Man Bites Dog” in the UK, but I believe the original Belgian title was “C’est arrive pres de chez vous”. The newspapers were creating a lot of fuss over both these films.
Yes! Finally somebody reacts to this movie instead of just the more well known Tarantino movies. Pulp Fiction was what put Tarantino on the map with general audiences, but when serious film fans saw Reservoir Dogs, they knew this guy had real talent. If you've ever wondered why such big movie stars signed on to do Pulp Fiction, it's because of this film right here. They were begging to be on his next movie.
Mary Mr. Pink doesn't get away at the end. If you listen to what's going on in the background, you'll hear Mr. Pink gets confronted by the cops then gunfire. So no one gets away everyone dies. Tarantino is a master at his craft of story telling and dialogue with the characters he brings to life.
This movie changed my life!
I remember watching this and Pulp Fiction on VHS with my family.
A group of thieves begin to suspect that one of their friends might be a traitor following the aftermath of a violent jewel heist. But which one?
Changed "stuck in the middle with you" for a lot of people, including myself, LOL
After Mr. Orange got shot again by Joe, he knew that his chances of surviving where slim so the least he could do before going out was telling Mr. White that he was a cop. Also, Mr. White was trying to stand up for Orange & trying to convince Joe not to shoot him, which is another reason why Orange felt he had to tell White.
There are a couple of deleted scenes, including a close up where Mr. Blonde cut the cop's ear off, but it was cut off from the movie (no pun intended 😜) because it didn't look real & you could see that the ear wasn't real either. They couldn't have made it better because this was a lowbudget movie.
And someone wrote that Mr. Pink gets killed outside, wrong, he gets arrested. If you're gonna rewatch, when Pink goes outside turn up your volume & listen, you can hear the cops showing up & say freeze, Pink says don't shoot & since you don't hear any gunshots outside, it means that Pink got arrested.
Mr. Brown got shot in the head, or between the eyes.
HATE TO SAY FROM NOW ON EVERYTIME YOU HEAR THAT SONG ( steelers wheelers stuck in middle with you ) YOU WILL THINK OF THIS SCENE IN THE MOVIE I SEEN THIS MOVIE YEARS AGO NOW WHEN I HEAR THIS SONG THE SCENE POPS INTO MY HEAD
Hey Marjike, the character subtext in this movie is so next level. -------- Because Harvey Keitel feels responsible for getting Tim Roth shot. ------- HE stops thinking like a criminal and starts taking on a father figure role, soothing Tim Roth as he bleeds out. ------- He knows ROth's going to die, he feels responsible for it and it won't let him entertain the fact that Tim Roth is a cop. -------- Tarantino's subtext is always next level and gives the meaning of events in the movie so much more psychological impact than would be in a normal shoot-em-up heist flick. ------ I know that's the type of movie that you love. Minus cutting off the ear.
You can lose about 40% of your blood before you feint, and people have 70mL of blood per kg of body weight, so a normal 100kg man would have about 7 liters of blood. Realistically I think they've shown more than 3 liters of blood so far.
It’s just a beautiful piece of theatre
Jackie Brown
Mr Pink gets shot when he goes outside , you can faintly hear the yelling and gunfight
6:34 - OMG, Marijke, that was a Wilhelm!
Mr. Pink died, too. You can hear the cops showing up, shooting it out with Pink, and then they find the last 2 guys and kill Mr. White after he shoots the cop.
Tarantino took a lot of inspiration from John Carpenter’s The Thing for the atmosphere for Reservoir Dogs. A group of men in an isolated location not knowing who to trust.
if you listen closely to the end as pink flees he gets gunned or arrested outside
Except for Kill Bill, it's helpful to think of Tarantino movies more like watching a live play.
when you re-watch it, Pink "the Professional" didnt get away.....right before the cops bust in you can hear cars and GUNSHOTS happening off-camera and outside the building. Likely Pink was gunned down, just before the undercover cop confesses to Larry.
Tarantino was a straight up genius from day one. A masterpiece in storytelling, directing and editing.
Michal Madsen, who played Vic Vega (aka Mr Blonde), played Bill's brother in Kill Bill, which is probably where you recognise him from. He was also, I think, intended to be cast as Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction, which eventually went to John Travolta, which I guess is why they made him Mr Blonde's brother in the first place and just stuck with it. If I remember correctly, I think there was some talk about making a sort of prequel movie focusing on the Vega brothers, starring both Madsen and Travolta, which came to nothing and eventually the actors became too old anyway
Michael Madsen and Harvey Keitel were also in Thelma and Louise together
I see this scene every time I hear Stuck In The Middle With You.
You would love Jackie Brown! It's easily Tarantino's most underrated film, a wonderful, smart crime movie with lots of conversation and character development, relatively little violence, and a fantastic lead performance by Pam Grier
Reservoir Dogs is my favorite movie of All-Time. My favorite character was Mr. Pink. If you want another great crime film you NEED to watch True Romance. Tarantino wrote this movie, but sold the script. This though, allowed him to direct Reservoir Dogs. But True Romance is just as amazing. You'll love it.
Just saw true romance for first time recently. It’s sooo good.
Chris Penn (Nice Guy Eddie) is Sean Penns brother. We was in a bunch of amazing films in the 90's and died young. Great actor RIP
Well, this was Quinten Tarantino's first movie. And he came out the gate shooting. Literally.
Want a film noir styled movie? Check out Body Heat from the 80’s.
Great reaction Mary. I don't know if it the language used in the movie or if people don't really enjoy the film but it is rare to see a reaction to it. Thank you for doing this, it is a truly great film!
The life story of the guy who played Mr Blue, Eddie Bunker, is better than any movie. Look the man up, his autobiography was Fantastic.
Pink was the only one that acted professionally.😂😂😂
Loved Tarantino’s creative storytelling in his first outing. The biggest issue I had with this movie is the amount of external hemorrhage of Mr. Orange. I realize Tarantino did that for dramatic effect, but when you get shot in the abdomen you hemorrhage internally not externally. Also, Tim Roth (who I have admired in other roles and in the back story of this film) was a bit over the top acting wise, after his character got shot. Enjoyed your reaction! 😎👍
If you liked this one, you should check out Killing Zoe. Great heist flick with the same kind of gritty feel.
yes. the director of Killing Zoe co-wrote Reservoir Dogs
Mr. Pink does not get away. Listen to the background audio while Orange is confessing he is a cop. You can here the cops outside catch Pink before they come in. You were commenting over that part I think.
You probably recognize Nice Guy Eddie from Rush Hour. Chris Tucker tried to buy C4 from him.
this was a great reaction, Mary.
i have three recommendations; Desperado, Once Upon A Time In Mexico, and Last Man Standing.
6:28 that’s wilhelm scream!
I think you'd like Jackie Brown, Tarantino movie based on an Elmore Leonard novel.
Another movie that Tarantino had a hand in that I think you would enjoy is Four Rooms. It also stars Tom Roth/Mr. Pink.
Four Rooms is a lot of fun!
Agree!
'Ello Betty. I 'aven't got a problem. I said I've got fucking probLEMS. Pluu-ral.
Great job reacting to this one Mary, and Cheers & Salutations from Canada. 🥃☮❤
This has been one of my favourite movies for thirty years and combined with Pulp Fiction made Quentin Tarantino on of my all-time favourite filmmakers.
I'm also pretty sure this was the first time I'd seen Steve Buscemi and Tim Roth, both of whom rank on my Top 10 Actors List. As well, it has an amazing 70's soundtrack.
US hospitals are bound by law to report gunshot wounds. In other words; investigation and jail time would be practically guaranteed.
mr pink got arrested, you hear it on the back ground that they hook him.
It's funny that for a guy who lives for movies that this script was written like, and could almost be performed as, a stage play. There's almost no cinematic conventions used at all.
The "Twelve Angry Men" style of filmmaking, love it!
Interesting note, Tarantino sold 2 scripts before this but this was actually the first one produced.
Those were the times when Tarantino made movies where you could still speculate on the quantity of blood would do what.
These days he doesn't start with anything less than more blood spilled than a body can actually contain.
That goofy scream in the background is the "wilhelm scream". It's a famous sound effect. I think it was originally used as a serious sound effect but directors thought it was funny so they started putting it in their movies as an inside joke and an easter egg. Any time you hear it you should assume it is the director using it as a joke/easter egg for anyone that knows what the "wilhelm scream" is.
Watching this movie. You do not realize it, but you can tell who every character is by watching the breakfast scene.
Little bit about U.S. hospitals. If you come in as a patient with a gun shot wound. The police will be called.
After surgery you may or may not be handcuffed to a hospital bed.
When the doctor says you can be interviewed, then you will be interviewed by the police.
Love this movie! Thanks for the reaction. Please watch Jackie Brown, directed by Quentin Tarantino.
Words cannot express my admiration for Jackie Brown.
Mr. Pink actually does die. While Mr. Orange is confessing to Mr. White in the end you can hear the interaction between Mr. Pink and the police. Everyone dies.
"I don't like my husband's music choices, but at least he's not a psychopathic killer...' as far as you know....lol
Try "Thief (1981)" Very underrated intelligent crime thriller, i recommend it.
If you turn the volume up and listen carefully at the end, you can hear what happens to Mr. Pink. He doesn't get far...
Check out Angel Heart for a crime caper .
I don’t think you caught it, but Mr.Pink is killed by the cops outside, there is faint gunfire in the background.
So True Romance!!
To be honest, I've never been much of a movie buff. I've always preferred to read and study, especially history. All that has changed since I started watching Mary's reactions to movies. She becomes an additional character from time to time then steps out to be the objective observer. For example, when Mary says, "I had bad so you'll have it bad.... can't you just close the wound.... isn't best to just go to jail?" By now you would think all these characters would take Mary's advice. She also steps out of the scene and wonders why she would want the cops to stay away. Mary does all this in the most charming way....she basically adds to my enjoyment of every movie she responds to. Her reaction to Reservoir Dogs is classic Mary.
A couple of things about Quentin Tarantino, his movies always start right out in the middle of the action, and he always uses great music. Also he is like Alfred Hitchcock in that he usually has at least a cameo in his movies, although a little more than a cameo in "Pulp Fiction".
Funny if you pay attention in the first 10 minutes of this film. They tell you who did it in that timeframe. 😂
Mr Pink was shot outside, nobody made it.
The morale of the story is; don't tip.
This is Tarantino's first movie, when he was making the film festival circuits looking for a buyer nobody wanted to buy it. The owner of Miramax approached Tarantino and said they'd buy the movie but they would have to get rid of the 'ear scene' because woman wouldn't want to see that and they make up half the audience. Tarantino said it was his movie and he is keeping that scene in. Miramax agreed to keep it in the movie but told Tarantino to remember what they are letting him do. Anyways, I think the first half of Tarantino's film catalog was distributed by Miramax so Tarantino made them quite a bit of money.
Please consider watching Snatch
Most Guy Ritchie films are worth seeing.
This is still my favorite Tarantino movie. If you’re interested check out The Hateful Eight, also from Quentin Tarantino. It has a similar theme.
I think you would like Kurosawa's "Rashomon".
18:35 😂
Mr. Pink dies outside.
Mr Pink's tip reasoning isn't necessarily wrong, but it's f'd up to make it the waitress's problem
No one does tension like Tarantino.
Pro tip, vic is vince vega's brother...pulp fiction...
And no, pink doesnt make it, he gets shot outside.
One of the best reactions in a while. I mean that in a good way...❤😮😊
After the intro I knew this reaction was going be a banger.
The old man knew he was the rat because of the diner scene, the Rat, Mr Orange rats out Mr Punk about the tip, hence the old man Saying he should have known. Also Mr White is sympathetic to the waitress as he is with Mr Orange.
Hooked On A Feeling
Guardians
:-)
I wanna say it was also in one of the Shrek movies, with the pirate piano player.
...maybe that was the "Far Far Away Idol" from the DVD extra...
I cannot wait until you watch True Romance. It was written by Tarantino. I would say it is even better than this movie. But I could be wrong.
You are not wrong.
True Romance is great, but not better than Reservoir Dogs. There's a certain focus and a "purity" in the script and pacing to this film that TR doesn't have. It's a bit messy IMO.
Another crime movie you might like is 'Things Change' (1988)
Thanks, Mary! 👮♀
With how tip culture is going in America today, I'm closer to siding with Mr. Pink. Asking for tips on picking up food, massive delivery charges before tip, and customer service declining across the board. I used to work on tips as well, you gotta earn them, you aren't entitled to them.
Customer service can only decline when you don't pay people enough. The system was never going to work, only works when everyone tips, and that's impossible. The businesses tried to put the burden on the customers when in reality they are failing the workers.
Tip culture has not gotten more complicated. The solution to your conundrum is very simple. Just keep tipping your servers and don't tip for takeout, like you always have done.
yay! yeah, it's maybe my favorite tarantino movie. it's between this and inglorious basterds. and you got something that a lot of people miss - that the cop KNEW mr. orange was the cop but didn't reveal that.... even when his ear was getting cut off. all of a sudden, you realize that that victim was really HEROIC actually. yeah, after seeing this movie for the first time, i was just sitting there kind of shocked and thinking "whooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaa". and such a cool sound track.
Talking about a messy deal, huh.
Before this, he had a hand in the scripts of True Romance and Dusk til Dawn. True romance he started writing as a video store clerk, so its about him, if he had a movie fantasy life, written as a movie story! Its a fantadtic movie i think directed either by one of the scott brothers, or one of the other huge action directors of the day! But this was his totally first written and directed movie, and in my opinion, still the best! And like many of his movies, taken from an old japanese story, about deveral samurai going to get revenge on a warlord, but the warlord was ready for them! And Quentin has a part in this ...he also breaks character at the breakfast table!
Every time I watch a reaction video to this movie, I notice that the reactors almost always miss the fact that, in the very end, Mr. Pink gets shot by the police outside.
