I'm so pleased that you put The Devil Rides Out on your list. Many modern readers haven't heard of Dennis Wheatley but wow, he was a masterful storyteller and, as you say, he researched real life magic rituals and knew his stuff. As for The Witching Hour, that's another rabbit hole for the horror aficionado to fall into! I love Rice's (early) vampire titles too, but The Witching Hour really does have some wonderful and creepy content.
Great list❤ ! I have read most of them and they are indeed in my top 10 too . The Devils Rides Out by Hammer such a great and fun film and It introduced me to Christopher Lee 🖤, I need to get a hold of that book 😊.
Great list! I am still looking for Hell House in my country. I rate The Shining as Stephen King's scariest book, great choice. I read The Devil Rides Out last year and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
You have good taste! Good luck with Hell House. It’s so much fun. I actually discovered it when Marvel loosely adapted it in Werewolf by Night. I was compelled to track it (and the movie with Roddy McDowell) down.
🌹💙 Thank you for sharing this. Some of these I’ve never heard of, some I wouldn’t think they were better than the movies. Darkly Blessings Occult Detective! 🕯️🙏
I haven't read Hell House, or, indeed anything by Richard Matheson, so that's something I need to rectify as that sounds very much like my type of thing. My Dad had been in the airforce, and he told me that every barracks he'd ever been in had had a battered copy of The Devil Rides Out laying about somewhere, to the extent that he began to wonder if the RAF actually issued them. The Exorcist? Ooh dear me no, too rich for my blood...
10. The Amityville Horror (Anson) 9. Hell House (Matheson) 8. House of Leaves (Danielewsky) 7. A Dark Matter (Straub) 6. Haunting of Hill House (Jackson) 5. Dracula (Stoker) 4. The Shining (King) 3. The Devil Rides Out (Wheatley) 2. The Witching Hour (Rice) 1. The Exorcist (Blatty)
Good list Bob. I’m going to have to run down The Devil Rides Out. That looks like a rewarding read!
Brilliant stuff. The Christopher Lee read audiobook is available on UA-cam.
@@occultdetective Gotta love Christopher Lee!

Good list!!! My fav is Rosemary’s Baby by Ira Levin,
That’s a damn good one.
I love that one too!

Wheatley was a military man. Wouldn't surprise me if they littered them everywhere.
