Video shows rescue of driver as semi dangles off bridge

- A semitruck driver was rescued Friday after a crash caused his truck to dangle over a bridge between Indiana and Kentucky on Friday.
First responders could be seen rappelling down to the semi's cab where a female driver was still trapped inside. The driver was then seen in the arms of a rescuer being pulled to safety around 12:30 p.m.
Louisville Metro Police confirmed the driver and fire fighter are safe on land at this time.
Louisville Fire Chief Brian O'Neill said the recuse method is known as a "pickoff."
"All credit goes to these folks right here," O'Neill said, pointing to about a dozen fire department members behind him. "This is our rescue company that handled this. They train for this stuff all the time. You see these were some serious heroes here."
About 30 firefighters were on the scene, plus members of EMS and Louisville Metro police.
The cause of the crash remains unknown at this time.
Two other vehicles were involved. One person was taken to the hospital.
The semi driver was also taken to the hospital, but appeared to be OK, according to O'Neill.
The truck dangling from the bridge appears to be a Sysco truck. While the driver has been saved, the semi-truck is still hanging from the bridge.
Both sides of the Clark Memorial Bridge are shut down, LMPD said. It's unclear how long the bridge in downtown Louisville will remain closed.
In a statement Sysco said the company is grateful for the quick response by first responders.
"Sysco is enormously grateful to rescue services and law enforcement who quickly and safely resolved the accident on the Clark Memorial Bridge today. We are thankful our Sysco colleague is safe and thank the first responders for their courageous efforts rescuing our driver. Safety is a priority at Sysco, and we are cooperating with the law enforcement investigation," a company spokesperson said.
Thats my friend Sidney I also work at Sysco shes tough as nails man.. she said a driver on the other side of the bridge crossed into her lane and hit her which made her go off the side. She said the worst part was looking at the water for 45 mins.

@@cjvaill1339 I heard witness tell news that Pickup driver was swerving in and out of traffic and came up on accident and while trying to miss it hit the Semi causing it to lose control. Hopefully Tne Union can get that footage for the accident reveiw.
I'm glad everyone is ok. That had to be the longest 45 minutes of her life! They rescuers were amazing.
The guy that rescued her is a hero. I salute that guy. I'm scared of heights and I can't swim, this is my worst nightmare being in a situation like this.

Believe me or not Thats my sister sydney thomas who was later on taken to u of l hospital where our family rushed to, right after we after found out. Shes in complete shock, but shes alright.

I'm so glad she's okay, what a scary situation. I heard she was able to stay very calm until she was finally back on solid ground, kudos to her for keeping her wits about her.
I love First Responders. I worked in disaster recovery for big companies, in City management and climbing mountains and the Coast Guard in our personal boat. Firefighters and others are amazing. Big beautiful Golden Lab dog breed personalities is what first responders. I love them all.

If you look closely at a still shot from a different angle, the only thing keeping it from going over was the top corner section of trailer pinned in the suspension abutment. Could shift at any time is an understatement.

@@KratosRagerhe did everything. wym? he stopped the trailer from going over the edge. at any moment it could have slip and fell over. but God kept it still until rescue came.
As a driver, I can't tell you how many times I've had this exact scenario running through my brain when going over a bridge!

So far so good! Tractor still attached to trailer. If the tractors rear wheels can be pulled the rest of the way up unto the bridge the hard working people will have salvaged the truck without losing any it into the Ohio river. Truly amazing work being accomplished!

I drive a large box truck over a bridge in Toledo, Ohio from time to time. The guard rails are so small and the bridge is so freaking high over the river. I always wonder........

I live in Kentucky also and have been across that bridge. Its a really far away drop to the river below. Thank God somehow the truck did not go all the way over. God checked and said no.. not her time.. and it snagged on. Great resuce work I applaud all of them and this woman truck driver is very courageous.
I’m very proud and thankful for the courage of the rescue team. I have to also ask, how did this happen? As a nation we have to focus more on safety and prevention. It’s becoming way too dangerous.
Witnesses said driver swerving through traffic came up too fast on accident in front of him crossed over hit truck causing it to lose control and go through guard rail.

I don't like driving over high bridges with a big truck because the guard rails are not designed to hold a big truck. You don't want to make any mistake and hope someone else doesn't either. From the cab of a big truck it looks like there is no guard rail.

There needs to be more of a storyline though for a movie. Maybe there was an errant firework from Thunder exploding almost a year later. This caused the railing to break. Then……the truck driver was getting harassed by her company about saving time and overlooking the fact that her brakes were not working that day. Then a Loch Ness Monster came out of the Ohio and almost ate her, but just in the nick of time the Fire rescue team was able to save her. Seems believable right?

But, that proves nothing. Isn't that the point of your faith, to believe without proof? So why are you looking for the one thing you must never have in this life? Give God credit if you are so inclined, I'll be grateful to those who rescued her, the installers of the guard rails that slowed her down just enough, and so on.

That's one hell of a hitch pin and fifth-wheel to hold that tractor on the trailer, it's the only thing keeping the tractor for going into the river. Thank God they got the driver out safely!

my nightmares ant this bad , I'm terrified of heights and I mean on a level most cant understand , I cant watch the video the thumbnail did me in .these rescue guys are on another level they truly are. don't know how they do it , wish my mind would allow me to be so brave , but not real, firefighters and rescue are the true hero's, they will help without an ID , don't lie and say you smell like weed so they can search your car , they just help ! period ! wish the boys in blue take some notes here .

Man I was driving my pickup down this exact bridge the same day and swerved around a car parked in my lane and actually hit an identical sysco truck. I must have just missed seeing this accident! World is full of crazy coincidences. I drove off before I could see what happened to the truck I hit.
